Mind according to Vedanta

Quote from true charm and power of Vedanta

Mind according to Vedanta

During the dream-state, the mind becomes free from the body idea; it becomes associated with any impression that may be prevalent in the mind. When it is dominated by that impression, the mind has a particular ego idea. A dreamer can have any kind of ego. A queen may think she is a beggar-woman. Any kin d of ego can exist there because you do not know which impression will be prevalent in a person while dreaming. The will and power of judgement that are associated with the ego idea based upon the physical body, does not exist anymore. therefore, we do not have any kind of self –determination or definite will in the dream state . We do not have even any definite judgement of consistency or property in dream. In dream state a person does not have a definite ego idea, one does not have nay definite standard of judgment so nothing seems incoherent inn a dream. One also lacks in will power and one cannot resist when resistance is necessary. Any tendency, desire or idea may be prevalent of that time. We are actually at the mercy of the tendency or desire that prevails at that time. Being influenced by the desire or will, or wish, the mind creates an image or picture out of those impressions. The impressions become concretized. Just as we can see a picture painted on a canvas in al three dimensions, similarly , this mind is like a piece of canvas painted by al these imprison gathered during waking hours.

How to fulfil your genuine desire for bliss

We all are striving hard to attain full satisfaction in a persistent manner. In the material world, nothing can give us such ecstasy. Consumption of a normal good is characterised by diminishing marginal utility; meaning that the additional consumption of the same good renders less and less satisfaction. Thus, we get fed up with it and look for another good to give us a feeling of complete satisfaction. But that also follows the same rule. There is no peace.
In the midst of this chaos, the truth is that complete bliss is possible to attain only through this life. Thus, unknowingly at the subconscious level, there is a constant struggle to seek the state of satiety, though we look for it materialistically. This happens because we get guided by our natural tendencies and the craze for an easy solution. The desire to attain bliss is genuine but the mechanisms we adopt to reach it can be faulty.

It is in this context that rationalisation and the role of conscience become important. The Buddha showed the path of withdrawal from indulgence in the material world and the perusal of the ultimate state through a disciplined life. The attainment of nirvana leaves a feeling of complete satisfaction and bliss. And interestingly, all this is possible only by accepting life. As Ramakrishna pointed out, what appears to be an illusion can actually manifest itself later as a part of truth. Thus, Ramakrishna’s Vedanta is unique and unravels a realistic approach. First attain it, spending time in silence and isolation, later look at the material world and realise the oneness. A combination of detachment and persuasion unfolds the mystic presence.

Introspection in silence establishes a unique connection between the vast and the individual. Even while one is in the midst of the duties and responsibilities in the material world, a sweeping breeze blows over to touch the mind and takes it away to an unknown state of joy. It is as if you have mingled with ecstasy itself and your every part of existence bears the ultimate happiness. Tagore tried to define it as an embodiment of an unembodied existence in your whole presence. The Vaishnavite simplify it in terms of the music flowing from the flute of Krishn, engulfing the existence of Radha and imparting ethereal joy. For, he stays nowhere but in the company of his devotees.

To an ignorant person, of course, a liberated soul may appear to be wandering aimlessly. But within that wandering, he has actually achieved what cannot be explained in words. His joy is too enormous to be defined materialistically.
The unique aspect of spiritualism is that it takes the individual to such heights that all desires get washed away with the glow of composedness that one is able to acquire. The Buddha suggested that we make repeated attempts to attain nirvana. Using an altered expression, Ramakrishna said that he would like to enjoy the enormity in different forms and in different ways. Thus, one can completely empty oneself forever. Once the lamp is lit in this world, its radiance will be evident in the path of eternity. The writer is professor of economics at the Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi

Imbibe The Knowledge

The Speaking Tree | Lifestyle | ET
By SENSEI SANDEEP DESAI

Related imageWe are not born knowing how to live. Knowledge comes with learning. To make the learning process a source of joy, teachers need to believe that “to teach is to learn twice”.
Teaching T’ai Chi, I have come to realise that people are receptive to criticism and advice much more than we believe them to be. The resistance is to force when ‘knowledge’ is thrust on a student. Knowledge has to be imbibed, not imposed. Hearts are like flowers; they remain open to the softly falling dew, but close up in the violent downpour of rain.

To impart knowledge to someone, you need to treat a person as he could be, and not as he is. You have to go over to where he is standing, take him by the hand, metaphorically speaking, and then guide him. You must create a state of mind that craves for knowledge, a mind that is full of interest and wonder. By the same token, students who expect their accomplishments to be acknowledged should not get discouraged by the teacher’s lack of verbal reassurance. Rather, they should channel their disappointment into a resolve to build an inner strength that does not require the approval of others.

If the art being taught is to continually evolve to higher and higher levels, each generation of students must surpass its teachers. When students are trained, it is essential for the teacher to leave the students alone, for without his absence they cannot develop themselves.

Quote from the True Charm and Power of Vedanta

Image result for Imbibe The Knowledge quoteOne of the greatest dangers against which an aspirant treading the difficult path of Karma-Yoga must be constantly on guard, is pride , particularly the pride of virtue, resulting in intolerance of the wekness of others. Even tolerance , according to Swami Vivekeananda is not good enough for a Karma-Yogi ; since thee is always some element of patronage in one who only tolerates , and patronage invariably means a kind of superiority in the person who gives or helps. If the Karma-Yogi is, therefore, really to serve man “in a spirit of worships”, his attitude must be that of total acceptance, Christ had always greater condemnation for the “virtuous” Pharises who prided himself on his righteousness than for the unfortunate sinner. His utterance; “Judge no, that ye be not judged! sums up for all time the folly of intolerance. Many a reformer, in his fanatical zeal to save the souls of others, has ended up by becoming what William Blake called. “a fiend of Righteousness”

These then, are some of the main obstacles that beset the path of Karma Yoga –perhaps the steepest , and the most frequently lost, of the four Paths. This is inevitable because whereas the Bhakta, the Jnani and the Raja Yogi may often be able to forget the world of man, the Karma Yogi is constantly required to be “In the world but not of it” But there is no need to despair; Provided the aspirant is-and continues till the end to be –humble sincere, earnest and persevering , he will in good time, by the grace of God, achieve the same result through unselfish work, that another may obtain by following a different path.

Success Through Mastery of Words

Success Through Mastery of Words

How can you become a master of language, able to express your thoughts concisely, clearly and  with a power to impress others? The points that follow will help you get started on the right lines.

Sometimes people stand silent without any expression because they had not knowledge of the situation under discussion. For instance, if you happen to be totally ignorant of boats and selling, you will not be able to say anything substance if someone asks you what all the varous types of boats . in such circumstance, no amount of skill with words will help you.

The fact remains that to say anything worthwhile about some particular topic you need to know something about it. Therefore, the starting point for mastery of language and the skills of communication is knowledge . Knowledge comes with study and experience. Study brings  book knowledge, while experience brings knowledge of the job you do.

Effective use of language involves both speaking and writing . to improve in both speaking and writing you must follow good models and practise regularly. Let us look at the spoken word first.

Choosing good models for your spoken words is the easiest part of the task. Probably you know one or two people whose way of saying things you admire. Apart from your personal acquaintances, some of the people  who appear regularly on television may strike you as having this skill.

Set out to copy the style and manner of your chosen model. Note the kind of words they use, the shortness or length of their sentences or length of their sentences or length of their expressions.

Notice how they describe a thing logically pointing out its general details and then drawing attention to finder details. Try to imitate their ability to set out the various points one by one logically and orderly.

In studying your models, note the unusual words they use. You must build up a good vocabulary and develop the confidence to introduce into your own speech the new words you learn. Keep a good dictionary at hand and use it frequently.

Some mistakes, however are important, especially n the field of syntax as they can lead to misunderstanding.

For instance; do not confuse the words both and each. This is a common mistake For example, Jim and Jack were both riding bicycle’ can only mean a bicycle with two riders. Probably the speaker meant, ‘Jim and jack was each riding a bicycle.’

You may be gong for a job interview and you now that ‘Yes’ and No answers will not impress the interviewers. Rehearse for the occasion by imagining the interview. Ask yourself the kind of questions likely to come up.  Let your imagination tell you the exact words you will use . Hear yourself giving the right answers.

Written expression seems to present special difficulties to many people including some who are effective in speech.

Writing does involve attention to some points that do not arise in speech. Punctuation is one, for a misplaced comma can alter the sense of your words. A frequent error is to use a comma where a full stop is demanded.

You can easily learn the elements of correct punctuation and an hour or two spent with a suitable book will do the trick.

In writing we need to be consistently on the alert for the reader may apply a quite different meaning to your words from the one we intended That is why it is usually necessary to the written word more complete, more specific to try to get the full meaning into the words themselves instead of relying on the way we say them.

Keep your written communications short and simple. Avoid the common fault of introducing long, out or the ordinary words and phrases that people do not use in speech. Use the familiar, conversational phrase of word.

Spend as much time revising your work as you spend in first drafting it. What you first write can always be made shorter, clearer and more elegant. Cut out lengthy introductory paragraphs and avoid long, explanatory summing up at the end.  (courtesy ; “Phycologist Magazine)

Good sees the Heart

Once an untouchable sought entrance into a temple . the priest, however, refused it. In answer to the poor man’s requests, the holy man replied. “You are impure by birth first undergo penance for two years, and then come into my presence, then I shall consider your request. “The untouchable returned home sad, to do the holy man’s command.

As chance would have it, this very priest saw the untouchable some three years later passing by his temple quite unconcerned. The priest stopped him and inquired; “Hello, how is it that you di not come to my temple? Have you not yet performed the penance ? it is over two years now. ‘The poor devotee replied. “Yes , I carried out your orders and I thank you for your instructions. For , in fact the Lord blessed me with His vision, and warned me against entering your temple, for He said. He had not Himself visited it for ages.”

The vanity of the priest was crushed, his pride was humbled .God sees the heart, to Him appearances are immaterial.

Quote from The true charm and power of Vedanta

Purity has been the foundation of all truly great characters. If you build a house on the sand, it is sure to  tumble down; similarly, if we build one characters on anything but purity, they will not stand, impurity is a mixture; purity is one without  a second. Mixed thoughts are seeing many; pure thought is when you see only One. When you think of nay one’s evil side, , you yourself fake that evil; just as when yo unmeditated on a saint, you gain saintliness. What you think you become. when we realize how mush we lose by dwelling on the plane of evil, we grow watchful and hold the mind only on the plane of good and see in everything the . All-pervading God. If we wish to save ourselves , we shall have to struggle hard, we shall have to regain inch by inch what we have lost by dwelling on the evil in the world.

Monday, 19, March 2012 Today I can complain because the weather is rainy or I can be thankful that the grass is getting watered for free. Today I can feel sad that I don’t have more money or I can be glad that my finances encourage me to plan my purchases wisely and guide me away from waste. Today I can grumble about my health or I can rejoice that I am alive. Today I can cry because roses have thorns or I can celebrate the fact that thorns have roses . Today I can mourn my lack of friends or I can excitedly embark on a guest to find new relationships . Today I can complain because I have to go to work or I can shout for joy because I have a job to do. Today stretches ahead of me, waiting to be shaped . And here I am, the sculptor who gets to do the shaping . what today will be like, is up to me. I have to choose what kind of day I will have! Common Mistakes of Man The delusion that personal gain is made by crushing others, the tendency to worry about things that cannot be changed or corrected, insisting that thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it, refusing to set aside trivial differences, neglecting development and refinement of the mind, and not acquiring the habit of reading and study, attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do are the common mistakes of man. Let us Learn A lesson From The geese Have you ever wondered why migrating gees fly in a V formation? As with most animal behaviour , God had a good reason for including that in their instincts. As each bird flaps its winds it crest uplift for the bird following. In a V formation, the whole flock adds at least 71% more flying range than if each bird flew alone. Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the darg of trying to fly, so , it is quickly gets back into formation. Like geese, people who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going, quicker and easier than those who try to do it alone. When a leading goose gets tired, it slides back in the formation and another goose flies ahead in that position. If people had as much sense as geese, they would realize that ultimately their success depends on working as team taking turns in doing the hard tasks, and sharing leadership. Geese in the rear of the formation make a typical honking sounds to encourage those in front to increase their speed. It is important that such honking from behind be outraging. When a goose gets sick or wounded two other geese drop out of formatin and follow it down to help and provide protection. They stay with the unhealthy member of the flock until is either able to fly aging or dies. Then they fly out again with another passing flock or try to catch up with their own. May we be so sacrificial, that we may be worthy of such friends in our time of need. You don’t have to be a scientist to learn from God’s marvellous creation; you only need to stop long enough to observe and let God reveal His wonder to you Keep the Promises You make to Others. By keeping our promises , we win influence with others. We should never make a promise we will not keep . we can be very selective about the promises we make. Our ability to make and keep promises is one measure of faith in ourselves. Quote from The true charm and power of Vedanta In each of us there are two tendencies =the centrifugal and the centripetal. The one drives us toward external objects , the other draws us inward. The one scatters out energies and wakens us, the other helps us to centralize them and makes us strong. When through the power of concentration we are able to subdue all our various disturbing thoughts and desires, then we get the vision of Supreme Self seated on the altar of our hearts. Then alone all crookedness will be straightened out and all doubts about the Self will vanish forever. We shall be supremely blissful, knowing that we and the Father are one. But, if He exists? Heaven or Hell

Monday 20/ February /2012
Heaven or Hell An old man who had spent a life time of sins by cheating and thriving was on his death bed. The prospect of death and his punishment that would be meted out after life time frighten even the hardest of hearts. This old man too became frightened and started praying to God for forgiving his sins and promising to be have better in his next life. The cries of this old man drew the attention of an angel who was passing by and attracted her towards him. Coming near the dying man, the angel asked him “Why do you cry like this?” The saying man told the angel faithfully about his sinful apst and his fears about the future. The angel asked; “Can you think of some good acts you might have performed which may help you?” Cried the dying man; “Not one that I can think of , for, whatever I did, was found. How I wish I had done a few noble acts at least!” Angel, “Now, think of your childhood, when possibly you must have done some good thing!” The old man thought hard and said; “ I am ashamed to say that it was a good act. When I was a child. I went without food for some days. At last I found a piece of bread which I wanted to keep for two days. At that time a poor man who was no better than my self looked at my bread and pleaded with me to share it with him. I agreed and parted with half of it to that friend. Ca I call this a good deed?’ Angel ; “Do not fear, it is an excellent act. Hold on to it and you will cross the other life with freedom from punishment.” This assurance soothed the old man and he died peacefully. The soul of the old man was carried to heaven, on the life provided by the bread piece. Now, even as the old man’s soul started ascending to heaven on the bread piece. Other souls of equal character which were departing from the world at about the same time started clanging to the bread piece which was carrying the old man to heaven! When a number of them jumped on it, the old man got furthered lest the bread piece should fall down and endanger his chances. Annoyed at that, he shouted to the other souls which had started crowding on his bread piece. “Be gone all of you, the bread piece is mine! Hardly had he uttered these words when the bread piece crumbled and the old man along with other who had crowded on to his , fell down crashing into the suffering of hell. One small deed of real charity had been able to overcome a life time of evil deeds, but an act of selfishness spoiled even that slender foothold. People are lonely because they build walls instead of bridges. How to get Sense of Fulfilment From work. In one from or the other, we have to perform action/work during our lifetime. In this industrialised society, our man motive for work is to earn money. This motive becomes the driving force for all that we do and in course of time our inner life becomes unrefined, with this total dependency on returns for our work. There are some people who love work for tis own sake. They get pleasure just doing the work. They get a sense of fulfilment from work. To them, returns from work become secondary. A pat on the back, a work of acknowledgement or appreciation may be all they looking for. A mother doing incessant work for her family, for her children, has this kind of attitude to work. A mother/father with an inborn sense of duty performs their actions without an eye on returns. A student who is studying is not paid for his work. There may be at the back of his mind, plans for future prospects, for a future career. But for the time being , he has to be absorbed and devoted to his studies. He has to study. with a sense of duty . with this attitude, he can over come his likes and dislikes and pore deeply into his studies with total devotion. But what then will be the motive to transform all our actions into kamayoga, the yoga of selfless action, or work done with a sense of duty. Work done with this attitude comes out better . We feel we have mo energy for work. Work gives satisfaction, we learn a lot from it. Gradually, this attitude helps us to see the large process of life. Life becomes richer. We see much more behind ordinary, normal things of life, which we had taken from granted. We develop self esteem. Our self worth does not come from what return we get from the work, but from the feeling that we have done the work to the best of our ability. This enrichment of our inner life through work/action is called Karmayaoga. I cannot accept the money

Monday 17-October -2011
I cannot accept the money
Vidyasagar of Bengal was well-known for his charity to the needy. One evening when he was passing by a house, he overheard a conversation. A money-lender was harshly pressing for the payment of the hundred rupees that, he claimed, Ram, the dead husband of the poor lady, owned him. The lady replied through her young son that though her husband did not tell her about he debt, she would any how repay it after the period of mourning.
Vidyasagar went to that house the next morning. The young boy informed that his father had died a few days back. Vidysagar felt very sad and asked the boy to call his mother. He told the lady that he was a friend of Ram and that when he was in a great difficulty, he had taken a loan of hundred rupees form him (Ram). Ram had told Vidyasagar at that time that he borrowed the amount form a money lender. So he had come to pay back the amount . The lady replied through her son; Before his death he did not tell me about this. I cannot accept the money’ Vidyasager could not believe his ears. For a long while he unsuccessfully tired to persuade the lady to accept the amount. Even telling a lie he could not succeed. Vidyasager left in great surprise . (Courtesy; “The Vedanta Kesri)

The seemingly commonplace duties of daily life have an important part in developing the industry. Perseverance and courage essential in major affairs . To become a leader and an authority in any field of activity, you must first practice yourself to the daily routine of seemingly insignificant things. Make the best of what you have and greater things will follow.

Quote from Bhagavad-Gita
The Gita describes another characteristic of the illumined person;” free from passion, fear and anger.” Suppose I am making a special and earnest effort to get a certain thing. Now someone or something comes a hindrance or an obstacle in the way. The feeling that is then generated in the mind is called anger (krodha). The excessive desire to possess anything is called passion (raga) or lust (kama). One who is without lust and anger has no attachment to anything . No matter what work we do, if we do it without attachment, it will take us to the knowledge of the One. We shall see clearly that, like meditation, our daily common activities can also lead us to the knowledge of the One, which is the goal of the yogis, for this reason we should keep attachment out of our lives; everything must be done with a higher purpose in mind and we should remain calm. No work of an illumined person is done under the sway of passion and anger, which are the products of selfishness. Thus in order to attain knowledge we have to keep our senses under control, give up all selfish prayers and desires, and remain steadily focused on the ideal , unmoved by joy and sorrow.
Then extolling knowledge, Sri Krishna says;
O Partha this is the meaning of firmly having one’s being in Brahman. Once this state is reached, no more can sorrow and delusion trouble the person. Even if this experience comes at the moment of death, that person transcends death and realizes his or her immortal nature.

I drive joy
There was a doctor in Benaras who spent 5 minutes in the morning and evening for mediation on God. Knowing this, his colleagues and friends laughed at him. One day they argued that he was wasting ten precious minutes on something, which he had been misled into believing. The doctor replied, “Well, if God does not exist, I agree that I am wasting ten minutes a day. But, if He exists? I am afraid you are wasting your entire lifetime. Love and Desire

Monday, October 10, 2011
Love and Desire
Many of us, as adults, do all sorts of things to gain acceptance, approval and love from our parents and other loved ones. In many cases, our efforts go unnoticed or unrewarded. No matter what we do, it's not good enough. No matter what we do, we receive criticism and harsh judgment. No matter what we do, we don't get the same attention and consideration that is shown to others.
The end result is our feeling bad about ourselves. We feel unloved and unlovable. We feel defective and inadequate. We feel rejected and abandoned. It's very painful.
Despite this pain that we cause ourselves by repeatedly putting ourselves in these no-win situations, hoping against hope that somehow something will change, we continue the love-seeking and approval-seeking behaviors that get us nowhere.
When we try to communicate our needs and generate a dialogue in an attempt to learn if there's something we're doing that's getting in the way or pushing them away, these efforts fall on deaf ears. We don't get honest answers. We are left feeling confused, hurt and angry.
And still we seek their love and believe there's an emptiness inside of us that only their love can fill.
Truth be told, we will never feel whole if we are waiting for approval and love from others. We must learn to love ourselves despite how others perceive us and treat us.
One way to begin the process of loving ourselves is to stop victimizing ourselves and beating ourselves up by repeatedly putting ourselves in situations where we get rejected and hurt.
If we have made efforts to break through whatever walls have been put up, and these efforts continue to be ignored, unappreciated, and invalidated, at some point we need to stop making these efforts and accept the fact that we're most likely never going to get the love and approval we desire.
At some point we need to accept the fact that we can't squeeze blood from a stone. At some point we need to appreciate that it's okay to want love from others but not to need it, and that we shouldn't jump through hoops in attempts to get it.
At some point we need to respect ourselves, validate ourselves, nurture ourselves and love ourselves by discontinuing these desperate attempts to achieve the impossible.
Instead, we mourn the relationships that haven't lived up to the potentials we hoped for. We feel sad that we don't have the love that we would like from those relationships. But we don't minimize ourselves anymore. We don't put ourselves in situations that will lead to us feeling neglected and rejected. We stop trying to push the river where it doesn't want to go.
We accept the relationships as they are, with their limitations. We release any anger and resentments we are harboring. We feel good about ourselves for taking care of ourselves, for not living in denial, for not doing the same things and expecting different results. And we look elsewhere for acceptance and love if that is what we desire.
Quote from Bhagavad-Gita Gita
Beliefs and facts of Hinduism.
Hinduism is for those who want to:
• Follow the real proven religion of Peace
• Follow an eternal religion founded by God himself and not a man
• Follow a religion with unlimited Prophets of God and not just one
• Follow scriptures spoken and written down by God himself in person
• Follow a religion that has existed for millions of years and not just a few thousand
• Follow the original religion of man
• Stop killing all together (vegetarianism)
• Know and love God as a person, rather than just a name
• Know exactly who the person God is. His description, history, scheduled incarnations and so on
• Consider all living beings including the animals as brothers and sisters
• Believe that God created all living beings and thus we are all his sons and daughters
• Know when exactly is the Day of Judgment
• Know exactly why some are born poor/diseased/rich and so on
• Follow scientifically proven ideologies (Vegetarianism, Karma, Reincarnation, Yoga…)
• Know all the answers and no speculation
Hinduism is the oldest religion in the world, dating back to millions of years.
Hinduism is the most peace-loving Religion of all. This can be proven by the fact that Hindustan (The Land of the Hindus) or India has never attacked or invaded another nation. The Hindus have never stolen land belonging to others. The Hindus have never used force to convert others. The Hindus have never treated other humans as slaves. The other religions certainly cannot say the same.
The Hindus have the richest culture of all.
The Hindu scriptures are the oldest known to man. There main scripture of Hinduism is the The Bhagavad-Gita. The Bhagavad-Gita is the only word of God in Person. It is the conversation between a man called Arjun and God himself in the human form, Lord Krishna.
Hinduism preaches that there is only ONE god, who has many different manifestations. Hinduism is the only religion based on following a God who was actually seen by millions of people in the past and who will be seen again by millions in the future. God appeared as Lord Ram about 2 million years ago, as Lord Krishna 5000 years, as Lord Buddha 2500 years ago, and will appear again as Lord Kalki in 427,000 years time.
Hinduism is the only religion, which clearly states that there is life on other Planets, and actually gives description of life and the names of other Planets with living beings. This information can be found in the Shrimad Bhagavatam.

I prefer to waste ten minutes rather than a lifetime. Why should you grudge me the 10 minutes joy that I derive from? I am not robbing you of your joy; why should you rob me of mine. He asked. What is Life

Monday 11–April- 2011
What is life?
Man comes into this world without his consent ,and leaves it against his will. When he is little, the big girls kiss him and when he is big, the little girls kiss him. If he makes a lot of money , he is dishonest. If he is poor, he is a bad manager. If he needs credit, he cannot get it. If he is rich everyone wants to do something for him. If he is religious, he is hypocrite. If he does not go to Temple, he is hardened sinner. If he give to charity, it is for show. If he does not, he is a stingy person. If he dues young, there was a great future before him. If he lives to ripe age, he is an old fellow. If he saves money , he is a miser. If he spends , he is spendthrift. Such is life.
Positive thinking and successful living.
If you are going to build a house, the first thing you would do is to start clearing the land. You would never dream of starting to build on a site that is filled with rubbish.
Positive thinking cannot be achieved without hard work. To be effective, positive thinking must be regarded as a new life style, replacing the rubbish in the mind piled up over the years. We are all conditioned by our past. We hold many opinion and prejudices. For our past failures, we build up a pile of excuses so that when we want to try something new. The selfish ego holds on to these excuses. So in the first place, we must remove all the negatives from our minds.
For example , if you are feeling sad, tell yourself in detail how much there is to be cheerful about and thankful for. If you feel lonely , choose and interesting task and think how valuable it is to be able to work without interruption. Always try to substitute a strong, positive picture for the negative one in your mind.
At the end of each day, list all the happy things that have taken place. Remember that it has been a fine day. Get rid of the useless waste which can be poisonous if you let it accumulate.
Dr David Schwartz, a writer in psychology, says: “Of all living creatures probably not ones in ten million is a happy human being.” Talk the way you would like to be , and you will be the way you talk. This slogan should be written in block letter and kept always before you. Talk courageously, and you will be brave. If you want to be a leader, speak with confidence, if you want friends be sure all your words are friendly.
You talk the way you are. If you want to be different, alter your speech. Watch for revealing negative words and change them to positive ones at once. There is a positive side to everything. A new word means a new picture and a new picture means a new life.
In your efforts to improve, go slowly and do not bite off too much at once. Mental food takes the same processing as any other, it must be chewed well and digested before we try to take in any more. A statement like. “Today I am going to learn and grow, is good”. Affirm it and hold it for a day. When tomorrow comes, take it again a new day.
Power of Positive Thoughts.
Men are taught from childhood that they are weak and sinners. Teach them that they re all glorious children of immortality. Let positive, strong, helpful thoughts enter into there brains from very childhood, Lay yourselves open to these thoughts and not to weakening and paralyzing ones. The infinite strength of the world is yours.
Drives out the superstition that has covered your minds. Let us be brave. Know the truth and practice the truth. The goal may be distant, but awake, arise and stop not till the goal is reached.- Swami Vivekananda.
Remarkable Seven
The number 7 is a remarkable number because:
The colour of the rainbow are seven. The notes of the musical scale are seven. There were seven sages of Greece; there were seven kings of Rome. The city of Rome was built on seven hills. The world was made in seven days. There are seven days in a week. There were seven famous cities of ancient times-Rome, Antioch, Nineveh, Babylon, Athens, Tyre, and Carthage. there are seven wonder of the world. There is lucky 7,There are seven seas and finally there were 7th Heaven.
What is the Meaning of September?
September was the seventh month of the old calendar, and when it became the ninth, the Romans did not rename it. Its name comes from Spetem, meaning seven.

Quotes from The Essence of The Gita
We wont be killers even if we kill hundreds and we wont dies even if others kill us”-this is what we shall experience. All of us have read or heard the stories of the chaste wife and the virtuous butcher in the Mahabharata. But we have completely forgotten to work like these role models did; hence this degradation. That is why Sri Krishna says that we must work unceasingly and our work must be without desire. When we work, w must remain non-working within. Then we will experience the serene peace of a yogi.
Serenity is rooted in the soil of love.

"Personal Power – The Key to Success and Achievement

Monday 14 March-2011
Blog... "Personal Power – The Key to Success and Achievement"

Personal Power is the ability to control the environment around self and the behavior of others. Personal Power is an essential part of achievement. Nothing great can be achieved without the cooperation or contribution of others. That is where Personal Power takes on its meaning and importance.

Contrary to popular belief, Personal Power is not a gift that was randomly awarded to some and withheld from others. It is something that can be acquired and developed.

Personal Power may be influenced by the amount of money that a person has, it can also be the result of the social status or the occupation held. But the main generator of Personal Power is found in the person’s character. More specifically in the person’s leadership ability.

The greater the leadership ability, the greater the Personal Power. Luckily, leadership ability is something that can be acquired and improved. Anyone, regardless of age, race or gender, can become a leader. There is however a perquisite and that is self-confidence.

A leader can lack in expertise, some great leaders had limited formal education and all were not blessed with outstanding good looks. But the one thing that they all have in common is, self-confidence. No one will follow for a long time a would-be leader who has doubts about his capacities or is unsure of himself.

Self-confidence is not something that can be simulated. Either a person is self-confident or he is not. Whether the person is self-confident or not can be detected in the body language, in the choice of words used and in the overall demeanor.

Real self-confidence is the result of personal victories. To be more precise it is the result of the accumulation of ever larger and bigger victories. Even if these victories are not in related fields, each one contributes to the, “Yes I can.” feeling and is another stepping-stone toward acquiring self-confidence.

Another important factor in building self-confidence lies in the ability to become immune to the negative consequences of failures. The more involved a person gets, the more projects will go sour, the more failures will occur. Unless these setbacks are seen as learning experiences they will undermine any feeling of self-confidence a person may have.

A true leader will accept responsibility for any failure that comes up under his watch, learn from it and unwaveringly pursue his mission. Leadership is not for the timid soul or the faint of heart. Leadership is built on courage and fortitude. Qualities that everyone has and qualities that can be improved with determination, discipline and willpower.

Achievements need Personal Power. Personal Power is acquired through leadership. Leadership requires self-confidence. Self-confidence is acquired as results of the accumulation of victories. The formula is simple. The results are guaranteed. It all starts with victories, that is, special victories.

The victories that we have been alluding to here are victories over self. Victories won at the expense of others only mean that the opponent was inferior or less equipped. Victories over self are the true and self-confidence building ones. They are the mind expanding ones. The ones that show what we are really made of. The ones that will eventually give us Personal Power along with all the benefits that comes with it.

Quote from The Essence of the Gita
Self knowledge , the Goal of Life
The goal of our life is to attain Self-Knowledge. The goal can be defined in terms of nether joy nor sorrow. A person may be married or a monastic, a student or a business person, no matter who or where a person is, it is possible for us to work always in such a way that every work will nudge us forward on the path of Self=knowledge. It is simply not possible in separate religion from our daily life, though people may want to do so.

How To Overcome Stress And Strain

Monday 29 November 2010
How To Overcome Stress And Strain
The following points cover the situations, which make us tense. Use them as often as possible for relief from tension.
Whenever you think that the other person is responsible for your tension, examine your own behaviour and attitude your mental strain will be great when you fail to prove your point. You can overcome this situation by clear understanding.
When you are emotionally dependent on other persons, you want them to fall in line with your way of thinking. There is no justification in disturbing your mind when behaviour of the other person is unpleasant . To overcome this situation just forgive and forget
Be wise about your ambition, Be satisfied with what you are and what you have . This does not mean that you should not endevour for growth and success.
Do remember that to maintain superiority and status you would invariably suffer from stress and strain. That is when you need relaxed and peaceful atmosphere to enjoy the fruits of your labour.
Another aspect that provokes stress and strain is trying to do too many things. Usually you think you cannot refuse your close relatives and friends. Unless you realize your own comfort zone, trying to please people will result in stress and strain, Because you push yourself beyond a point, you will end up in disappointment. This does not mean that you should give up rigid routine but it does mean the need for proper planning and execution . Planning your duties wisely is vital so that you would be able to do the right thing at the right time. This also means distinguishing the important from the unimportant. Therefore divide long, dull and complicate subjects into convenient parts.
Do your wok well, take things easy, appreciate other person’s point of view, avoid rushing through any activity and be sure to be free from stress and strain.
The amount of good luck coming your way depends on your willingness to act.
Remembering not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.
Quote from The Essence of The Gita
One more thing. Only those who belonged to the warrior class-especially thing kings-used to practice Karma Yoga and as a result attained the knowledge of the all-pervading Reality. It was only from them that Karma Yoga spread among the Brahmins and other sections of society . Many may be surprised to hear this. Today’s Brahmins will particularly be surprised because they believe that only they have had the monopoly over all the scriptural knowledge of India, and its is they who have shared it with others out of compassion. There is plenty of evidence to show that this , although true in certain matters , is not true regarding everything.
We have seen Sri Krishna saying that Karma Yoga was at first known only among the kings. In the chandogya Upanishad we see Aruni and Svetketu, a father and his son, both Brahmins, accepting the discipleship of the king Pravahana-Jaibali. We also se five Brahmins. Pracinasala and others , accepting discipleship under King Asvapati. We see them receiving instructions regarding the knowledge of the supreme Reality from those kings in this way, the study of the scriptures shows that it is very probable that Karma Yoga and knowledge of the Absolute were first known among the royal among the royal families.
Hearing the history of Karma Yoga , another question arose in Arjuna’s mind. Sir Krishna had said that he had first taught Karma Yoga to the Sun Arjuna thought; “How is that possible? Sri Krishna was born just the other day and the Sun was born such a long, long time ago. How could he have instructed the Sun? In the context of this doubt, the Gita introduces the topics concerning God, His incarnations and their real nature.
Sri Krishna says, “I had given the teaching to the Sun long ago in a diffeent from of mind. But I clearly remember that it was I who had taught him through that form, because I am an incarnation of God(avatar) My knowledge is never lost. Both of us have been, and will be born many times in many paces and have worked , and will work, for the welfare of the many. You do not remember all this But I remember everything.”
We shall discuss next time what Sri Krishna teaches about the concept of God’s incarnation

Find The World Within You

Monday 18-October 2010
Find The World Within You
Sometimes we face an amusing question; Where do we belong? Before we go in quest of an answer, we must realize that we belong to ourselves. That island can be as barren as rocks on the moon or as fruitful as an orchard or a beautiful countryside. It is within us to make of ourselves what we want to be-creatively, not destructively. You train for your goals, but they must be realistic, not dreams beyond your reach.
During moments of stress and tension, we can take a vacation. We can take this vacation every day for a few moments and it costs nothing the daily vacation is within you, in the room of your mind. Go on this vacation when pressures are great. Relax for a few minutes, let go of the tension, renew your energies for the problems before you.
Isn’t it wonderful to be an island within yourself briefly? But you do not stay that way. You belong to yourself, no doubt, but you also belong to world. Happiness lies within the world, not totally within yourself. Prepare yourself to create a perfect rhythm between these two. You realize that you need the help of others as they need yours. Man reaches his true big self when he shares his success and his big self with others. He shares his courage with others when times are tough, when there is pressure. He stands up for himself and for others, turning a crisis into an opportunity . The world is full of crises, and we are here to help each other rise above them, to reach fulfillment, and sooner or later, the common benefit of Man.
Health Hazard
Weekends we go on a “clean home” drive . We thin of cobwebs , kitchen cabinets, toilets, etc. very few of us think of the computers. According to a new research, the PC’s Keyboard could be dirtier that even the toilet covers. They are said to be home t millions of bacteria , which can lead to diarrhea and vomiting.
The researchers found a host of bugs, including E collie and Staphylococcus areas, which can trigger skin infection. Such bacteria can put the user at risk. Most people don’t give a thought to such grime that builds on Pc.
The researchers pointed out that the PC must be cleaned often. One of the main causes for such harmful bugs or bacteria could be the habit of munching snacks at the computer desk. The food crumbs would fall into the keyboard and encourage the growth of bacteria. Poor personal hygiene and dust that traps moisture also provide an growth. According to Professor Hugh Pennington, .Scottish Microbiologist, personal hygiene is at the root of the problems.
So take care of yourself and your computer.
Personal Commitment Pays
Unfortunately, so many people have dreamed so long. They actually don’t even know what they want any longer. You have got to stir up the dream inside yourself. Your dreams and your destiny are not determined by ‘chance’ but by ‘choice’.
You can have anything in life you want… if you know hat you want! It seems , a young boy asked his grandfather, “would you tell me, please , which way I ought to go from here?” The old man answered, “that depends a great del on where you want to go”. The boy said .”Oh, I don’t much care.” The old man answered, “Then it really does not mater which way you go”, ?Which way do you want your life to god? What do you want? It is your choice! You are in control. Quite blaming others for your disappointments! Make quality decisions to get up and get going! Life goes on ! Renew your personal commitment to life. Renew your dreams . renew your vision. Don’t let time or circumstances keep you from turning you life around. It is your choice.
You must have a vision! Helen Keller once said. “The only thing worse than not having sight is not having vision”.
Ancient Scripture says without a vision people perish !if you don’t know where you are going, how will you know when you get there?
Your vision must be effective, clear, and inspiring to be valid.
Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “the future belong to those who believe in the beauty of there dreams’ Never let anybody steal your dream or vision!
Life’s result are not by chance but by choice.(Source; ‘Cosmo)
Quote from Essence of the Gita
The kind of calmness should be cultivated by all. A kind of intoxication entrees into us when we work. That is bad. We lose command of ourselves. It is work that goads us on and it is the senses that drive us on. the boss surrenders at the feet of the servant and the puffed up servant treats the boss any way he life’s!
In the battle f daily life and at the workplace, we should always be calm. That is why the teachings of the Gita are not only for monastic. Nor are they only for the married. They are relevant to all people of all nations and for all times. That is why another name for the Gita is the “Gitopanishads’.The special characteristic of the wisdom and teachings of the Upanishads is there universality. After showing different paths suitable to the various types of students, the sages of the Upanishads proclaim boldly “ You are heirs to immortality . Immortality is your nature. Through delusion you may imagine yourself to e a noble person, a barbarian, a priest or a laborer. But none of these identities can bind you . you are free , you are free. You are eternally free. ‘Only after seen the Gita’s universal spirit did the author of the “Glory of the gita “(Gita Mahtmay) declare that the Gita was produced by churning the Upanishads.

How to Relax Our Mind

Monday 7–June- 2010
How To Relax Our Mind?
A mind filled with tension and unhappiness leads to negative thoughts. Such a mind creates problems to oneself and others.
In contrast, a mind which is relaxed and happy comes from positive thoughts. Transforming negative thoughts into positive thoughts. Is the hall mark of wisdom. It is well illustrated by Gautam Buddha, in an anecdote.
Once Buddha was addressing a large gathering of disciples. During the discourse , one person, out of jealousy, abused Buddha. Buddha Lovingly replied. “People are waiting to listen to my discourse in the neighboring village; please do come tomorrow. “
The man was astonished. He asked Buddha, “Are you not hurt by my harsh words?’ Buddha replied, “ In order to hurt me, you should have met me before my Enlightenment. Just as fire loses its potency when it comes into contact with water, your words, even though full of fury, lost their sharpness when they are hurled at me now”.
This is the positive thought center one has to awaken Before Buddha’s Enlightenment everything and everybody hurt him. But after he attained illumination the negative thought center has changed completely. There is yet another story that inspires us into a different thought process.
Once a father felt disturbed when his son made noise. He thought of method to calm his son. He tore a world map into piece and asked his son to join them. To his surprises , the son came back with the world map neatly pasted, in a few minutes. “How did you do this?’ asked the father. The son replied, “ Behind the world map, there was a picture of a man and I could join them easily”. Here the father who was not aware of son’s potential was finally led to find it. It is an awakening for the father that he could channalise his son’s energy and intelligence for a positive cause.
Let us change ourselves. The world will change by itself. At the same time, let us not get lost in changing only ourselves and forget to include others in our growth. We live in an “ I and You” world.
Think over on the following .
To a question, “Who is flying the kite”?
A boy replies. ‘I am flying the kite.”
The tail of the kite says, “ I am flying the kite”
The string says, “ I am flying the kite.”
Voice of the Lord said, “Oh! Children . We are flying the kite”.
Hence , the Vedic prayer says, “Let us all be Enlightened”.
We can relax in the world only when we teach ourselves and others to strengthen our strengths and weaken our weakness.
Whatever be our weakness, if we identify it , the negative thought centre in us will lose its grip on us.
Life is both fair and unfair. Learn to be a good finder. Studies show that happy people are good finder and also have the courage to counter unfairness.
Let our goodness come from our strengths, not from weakness.
How To Overcome Worry
Happiness is the goal of every human being. But many find that they are often troubled worry. “What shall I do if this happens?” How can I manage to deal with that?” The thought of meeting him terrifies me”. These are some thoughts that chase the mind of the victim of worry.
As long as we continue to worry, happiness escapes. If we continues to worry, happiness escapes. If we are worried, it shows in our face. People shun those who are worried with their won problems.
When you are worried to face a situation. “Be prepared for the worst that can possibly happen” and then improve on the worst. You can improve on the worst by analyzing the facts and arriving at a decision to act on it.
Suppose you are a young person employed in a job you do not like. Besides being unhappy, you are worried about your future. You are free to leave the job and try your best to secure another job.
If you stay where you are, you save yourself the trouble of looking for another job but you must suffer a life of dissatisfaction. If you move, you stand a chance of getting into a satisfying job with better prospects.
The advice that one should change his job is more suited to a younger man. The older man, with the best part of his working life behind him, may not be able to start again at the bottom in something new. Even though he dislikes the job, he must stick to it. Where this is the case, the problem can still be solved by changing the attitude.
There are many such problems in human relations that can be solved by seeing them in a different perspective. Worries caused by misunderstandings between friends, workers and managements, husbands and wives can all be overcome in this way.
“Getting it of your chest” is another method . Pouring our troubles into the ear of a sympathetic listener is a sound method. The pity of it is that there are not more people willing to listen . when we consult a psychologist, he acts as a sympathetic listen in a professional way. But anyone who is sympathetic to care and listen is performing psychotherapy for the troubled person.
In certain cases, where a frustrating situation cannot be altered, one needs to compensate for the frustration. This means that one should seek to achieve success in other aspects of life. Then the lack of success in the frustrating aspect will not matter much.
For example, a person who is frustrated by distasteful work which he cannot leave, might turn his attention to cultivating adequate social life, sports or recreation and so on.
When we cannot change the worrying situation, let us avoid it as much as possible. Do not think about your unpleasant work when you are away from it. If an unpleasant task lies ahead required to do it. Do not attempt to do today what must wait until tomorrow. Be content to live one day at a time.
As self is the root cause of all strife and suffering so love s the root cause of all peace and bliss.
I prefer to waste ten minutes rather than a lifetime. Why should you grudge me the 10 minutes joy that I derive from? I am not robbing you of your joy; why should you rob me of mine. He asked. The critics were silenced. –Baba- Chinna Katha
