Path of Devotion

The path of renunciation is very hard. Complete self-surrender at the feed of the Master is a very hard thing, but without that spiritual growth is impossible-The disciple should always be ready to go to the mouth of a cannon or before a tiger  at the command of the Master without asking why. This is what is called true devotion.

Another thing necessary is to have no attachment for earthy things. The mind must be free from lust and greed. He who even here, before he is separated from the body, can resist the force of lust and anger, that man is really wakeful, that man is happy-Try to realise this and you will be free at once . Crush down egotism and say “I am lower that even a blade of grass” . Then you will see that all impurities will vanish, you will become divine. Then you will have the right to take the Blessed name of the Lord. Egotism stand between us and the Lord our true Self; so destroy it and say. Not I but Then Bring me the real strength and destiny all weakens,. Know that Atman the true self is never realized by a weak person.

Everyone wants happiness and to avoid suffering but the knowledge to achieve this is not imparted in schools and colleges. It is available in spiritual texts. There is no direct correlation between wealth and happiness. One can be wealthy and miserable. And one can be poor and happy. With power and position also, there is no guarantee of happiness. What, then, is the source of happiness?

Scriptures say that happiness is obtained in the phase of quietude between fulfilment of one desire and rise of another desire. Favourable objects, including persons, create a strong desire in our mind to obtain them. Desire creates restlessness. When the desire is fulfilled after a lot of effort, the mind experiences peace for some time. That’s the period we call happiness. Same objects may not create desires uniformly in all individuals. A person who sells his second hand car is happy getting rid of it, and the buyer of the same car becomes happy possessing it.

Happiness happens when our mind is quiet. This is evident during sleep. Why do we look forward to going back to sleep day after day? Because sleep is the most enjoyable state, when the mind is free of desire and thought. In sleep one is not aware of one’s gender, financial status, whether one is knowledgeable or ignorant, and yet, we have maximum happiness. So, the source of bliss is not outside. If we learn the technique of achieving quietude even in the waking state, we can experience superior bliss with full awareness. But our mind is always restless, chasing new objects and desires, looking for happiness.

Desires fulfilled with self-earned means and with discrimination of mind are fine. But one has to keep watching if desire fulfilment actually makes you happy. If there is more suffering and marginal happiness, one can reflect on whether it is worth it.

Wise people say that happiness is a ratio of the number of desires fulfilled divided by total number of desires we have. A person whose 10 desires are fulfilled out of 30 will have happiness score of 33%, while a person who had 10 desires fulfilled out of 10 will have 100% happiness. And one who has zero desire will have infinite happiness, because any number divided by zero becomes infinite mathematically.

A person surrounded by many exciting objects and activities may not find happiness in any of them, although his ego will remain boosted always. With a peaceful mind, even a simple meal can become a great source of inner joy and satisfaction. A person who has lot of meritorious deeds in his account has a superior, peaceful mind; is happy in any circumstance. He easily accepts adversity as coming out of his past karma and moves on, and tries to fill his life with more meritorious deeds.

Vedanta systematically leads us to the conclusion that there is an all-powerful consciousness within each individual that is the real Self. Here, the storehouse of bliss is always available. But it is experienced more in a quiet mind.

The final message is, minimalistic living and simplifying our life in order to keep the mind peaceful. This is the best way of drawing the nectar of happiness, the source of which is right within us.

Different Conceptions of the Divine

The various conception that seekers hold about the Divine vary with their growth and knowledge. As a Sanskrit text points out. “The higher castes worship God in the fire, the advanced seekers meditate on Him in their own hearts, the ignorant think of Him in the image and with religious stories, and those who have attained to the infinite realize His presence everywhere “

There are devotees who think of God as always associated with divine forms and attributes. Others consider Him to be formless but endowed with not only omniscience and omnipotence but also omnipresence. Some again combine these ideas and look upon the holy forms as manifestations of the Formless. To them the personal aspect of the Divine is a manifestation of the Impersonal and both are real . There are others again who try to realize the Transcendent Being who , as they hold is in His real nature beyond all forms and attributes but appears to be associated with them . Speaking of the different aspects of God, Sri Rama Krishna remarks; “God with from and without form are not two different beings. He who is with from is also without from. To the devotee God manifests Himself in various forms. Just think of a shoeless ocean-an infinite expanse of water-no land visible in any direction. Only here and there are visible blocks of ice formed by intense cold. Similarly, under the cooling influence, so to say, of the deep devotion of His worshipper, the infinite reduces Himself to the finite and appears before him as a being with from. Again , as on the appearance of the sun, ice melts away, so on the appearance of knowledge. God with from melts away in the Formless.” He says further “God is formless and God is with from too. And He is that which transcends both from and formlessness.”

Take a lemon in your palm. You know that it is a lemon by seeing its colour and form. In darkness, you can recognise it by its smell or by touching or tasting it. All physical objects are recognised by the sense organs.

But the colour and form of the lemon are not the lemon. These are mere modifications of the lemon. Each sense organ is capable of recognising only a single modification of an object. What, then, is the object whose modifications alone are known by the sense organs? What is the real nature of objects? Scientists have come to know the particles of which things are made but the real nature of objects continues to evade them. Philosophers are also in search of the basic substance of the universe.

The universe is composed of waves. No sense organ is capable of comprehending what lies behind the waves or modifications.

Therefore, what lies beyond remains a mystery. Both the knower and the known are themselves nothing but waves. Breath is itself composed of waves.

Living bodies are conglomeration of waves. We can perceive the subtle vibrations of our bodies by means of anitya anupreksha, or contemplation on the transitory nature of things.

How can the mind comprehend that which is beyond it? The mind knows nothing except itself.

Like a tape recorder, it communicates only that which has been recorded in it. We are so enmeshed in the world of modifications and waves that we are unable to see anything beyond.

It is our limitation that compels us to search for the soul and this is the starting point of spiritual quest.

Power of concentration

There is only one way to knowledge and wisdom and that is through the owner of concentration. Without this power nobody can accomplish anything in this world. The students who can concentrate their minds fully on their books are the best students. With the least effort they accomplish the most. The scientist in his laboratory concentration all the energies of his mind in one direction and thus discovers the secrets fo Nature. The astronomer fixes his mind, through his telescope, on sun, moon planets and they give up their secret to him. He is a good, musician who can concentrate his mind on his music. So also with artists and every one. This is the only road to knowledge. The more we can concentrate our minds on the subject of our study, the more rapidly the knowledge of that subject is revelled to us. Let us see then how to acquire this power of concentration, since all our wisdom is based on it, especially spiritual wisdom.

An absolute choice

There are times when suddenly, everything becomes clear in away that is profound, when everything falls miraculously into place, when the burden of confusion lifts and one is able to see the way things actually are. In moments like these, one experiences liberation.

Many, at one time or another, have experienced moments of liberation, but few have been so deeply affected that their lives have become transformed as a result. Why is this? Because it is not spiritual experiences in and of themselves that set us free. It is not the experience of overwhelming love, unbearable bliss or even penetrating insight that allows people to change in an extraordinary way. It is the readiness and willingness of the individual to surrender unconditionally to that which is discovered in the spiritual experience.

 One who is truly ready and willing to surrender, once having tasted what it means to be awake, will stay awake. If one is not ready to surrender unconditionally, if the context in which the experience of revelation occurs is one of profound attachment to the way things have been, then, even direct experiential revelation of the spiritual dimension of life will not be enough to deeply affect that individual’s relationship to life.

Again, what allows the event of profound insight and revelation to become extraordinary transformation is ultimately only the readiness and willingness of the individual to surrender unconditionally to that which is discovered in the spiritual experience. Spiritual experiences in and of themselves do not set us free.

A greedy man does not care for your Vedanta philosophy

For, he has his own philosophy which is more convenient and more profitable!

A greedy man may die, but ever remains his greed.

Neither do I condemn money nor do I condemn man. Rather, I condemn greed.

A greedy man’s property is grabbed by greedy man only.

]I pray;

May everybody have enough money but not greed.

Man without money is flower without honey.

Verily you are good. O money! Yet the bad names to you are many!

Because you held bad company.

So, please remain, O money! always in holy company!

Some are corrupt with regard to money.

Some are corrupt with regard to women.

Some are corrupt with regard to power.

But corruption does not lie in money, women or power.

It is lurking in the mind .Educate the mind and eradicate corruption.

O money! How much tear of sorrow you have brought to many!

O money! How may hand have caressed you lovingly!

O money! How much tear of joy you have brought to many!

The object of religion is to raise human life and consciousness to divine life and consciousness. It is, in fact, a God-possession by which every aspect of life is elevated and transformed into an absolute state of perfection.

The purpose of all spiritual discipline such as prayer, worship and self-dedication is to attain to this exalted state. It must be at the very outset understood that the supreme Truth that we aspire to realise is dwelling within every one of us.

By a continuous recollection and meditation of this Truth, we ought to provide favourable internal conditions so that this supreme Reality may purify the emotions of the heart and fill it with love, compassion and peace; that it may illumine the intellect with the vision of equality and a universal sense of oneness in the multitudinous revelations of nature, that it may be made to flow out spontaneously by the balance of a purified heart and inspired intellect as selfless action that tends towards the regeneration of humanity without any distinction of race, creed, colour or nationality.

The intellect, detached and merged in the super-conscious and static existence behind the manifestation, should stand as an eternal witness, calm, serene and filled with radiance, supporting the workings of universal love and service for which the heart and body are made the instruments.

God, who is at once the immanent and transcendent spirit, who is the one sole Reality, is not only the silent and attributeless Brahmn but also a Truth revealed as eternal light, infinite love and endless peace and bliss.
