Path of Devotion

The path of renunciation is very hard. Complete self-surrender at the feed of the Master is a very hard thing, but without that spiritual growth is impossible-The disciple should always be ready to go to the mouth of a cannon or before a tiger  at the command of the Master without asking why. This is what is called true devotion.

Another thing necessary is to have no attachment for earthy things. The mind must be free from lust and greed. He who even here, before he is separated from the body, can resist the force of lust and anger, that man is really wakeful, that man is happy-Try to realise this and you will be free at once . Crush down egotism and say “I am lower that even a blade of grass” . Then you will see that all impurities will vanish, you will become divine. Then you will have the right to take the Blessed name of the Lord. Egotism stand between us and the Lord our true Self; so destroy it and say. Not I but Then Bring me the real strength and destiny all weakens,. Know that Atman the true self is never realized by a weak person.

Everyone wants happiness and to avoid suffering but the knowledge to achieve this is not imparted in schools and colleges. It is available in spiritual texts. There is no direct correlation between wealth and happiness. One can be wealthy and miserable. And one can be poor and happy. With power and position also, there is no guarantee of happiness. What, then, is the source of happiness?

Scriptures say that happiness is obtained in the phase of quietude between fulfilment of one desire and rise of another desire. Favourable objects, including persons, create a strong desire in our mind to obtain them. Desire creates restlessness. When the desire is fulfilled after a lot of effort, the mind experiences peace for some time. That’s the period we call happiness. Same objects may not create desires uniformly in all individuals. A person who sells his second hand car is happy getting rid of it, and the buyer of the same car becomes happy possessing it.

Happiness happens when our mind is quiet. This is evident during sleep. Why do we look forward to going back to sleep day after day? Because sleep is the most enjoyable state, when the mind is free of desire and thought. In sleep one is not aware of one’s gender, financial status, whether one is knowledgeable or ignorant, and yet, we have maximum happiness. So, the source of bliss is not outside. If we learn the technique of achieving quietude even in the waking state, we can experience superior bliss with full awareness. But our mind is always restless, chasing new objects and desires, looking for happiness.

Desires fulfilled with self-earned means and with discrimination of mind are fine. But one has to keep watching if desire fulfilment actually makes you happy. If there is more suffering and marginal happiness, one can reflect on whether it is worth it.

Wise people say that happiness is a ratio of the number of desires fulfilled divided by total number of desires we have. A person whose 10 desires are fulfilled out of 30 will have happiness score of 33%, while a person who had 10 desires fulfilled out of 10 will have 100% happiness. And one who has zero desire will have infinite happiness, because any number divided by zero becomes infinite mathematically.

A person surrounded by many exciting objects and activities may not find happiness in any of them, although his ego will remain boosted always. With a peaceful mind, even a simple meal can become a great source of inner joy and satisfaction. A person who has lot of meritorious deeds in his account has a superior, peaceful mind; is happy in any circumstance. He easily accepts adversity as coming out of his past karma and moves on, and tries to fill his life with more meritorious deeds.

Vedanta systematically leads us to the conclusion that there is an all-powerful consciousness within each individual that is the real Self. Here, the storehouse of bliss is always available. But it is experienced more in a quiet mind.

The final message is, minimalistic living and simplifying our life in order to keep the mind peaceful. This is the best way of drawing the nectar of happiness, the source of which is right within us.

I drive joy There was a doctor in Benaras who spent 7 minutes in the morning and evening for mediation on God. Knowing this, his colleagues and friends laughed at him. One day they argued that he was wasting ten precious minutes on something, which he had been misled into believing. The doctor replied, “Well, if God does not exist, I agree that I am wasting ten minutes a day. But, if He exists? I am afraid you are wasting your entire lifetime. I prefer to waste ten minutes rather than a lifetime. Why should you grudge me the 10 minutes joy that I derive 4m.

A view of Vedanta

So you can see that when it came to religion. I did not find that I had to reject anything in Vedanta. I have practised ritualism and found it quite satisfying i have practiced meditation and found it quite satisfying. I have absorbed myself in devotional attitudes. I have found that , too, quite satisfying . I have also practiced the path of janana or reasoning a great deal and I have found that, also quite satisfying , I have become absorbed in ACTION and I have found that satisfying too. In other words from my own personal experience I have been convinced that all paths are equally fruitful for all equally spell for me the same truth the same monism. I have not , there fore, seen any contradiction in following a variety of paths.

Yes this is the great game . Something is there because of which the one reality appears as manifold. But i am not convinced that the individuals in this manifold difference in the quality of Divinity that they manifest. in this , all are the same . There are difference but they are differences of kind only . For example there is a kind of consciousness. Let us say tree consciousness, which is different from human consciousness, but it is equally effective, equally great. I can imagine also along the same train of thought, that there is a kind of consciousness known as stone consciousness which is equally as important , as significant , and as high as human consciousness or as ANGELIC consciousness- it is just different in kind. As long as I am completely identified with human consciousness or tree consciousness or lion consciousness, but if i could become pure consciousness, separating myself form the human ingredients in me. I could then identify myself with any type of consciousness and perceive it intuitively, directly. I myself have known some who have done that, and they say that tree consciousness, for instance , is an equally high state of consciousness , but completely different from human consciousness, but completely different  that when the hour passed in which their consciousness was beyond the limits of its own kind of knowing and they had indentified once more with human consciousness, they could not express what they had experienced in that state of elevation in terms of their human existence.

Prayer is an earnest hope or a wish, a request for help or expression of thanks made to God. Petition is the kind of prayer that begs for determinate objects. Supplication is when things sought are indeterminate. Obsecration is a solemn adjuration, asking a favour. Thanksgiving is the returning of thanks for benefits received.

Among all the means of salvation recommended by Jesus Christ in the Gospel, the first place is given to prayer. “Cry to me, and I will hear you. Call upon me and I will deliver you. Ask and it shall be given to you. Seek and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened to you.” Prayer is a source of strength.

By reading and meditating, we learn a lot, but by prayer, we obtain the grace to do it. Worldwide, the tradition of prayer has been a source of immense faith and strength. Brahma got the Gayatri Mantra, by akashvani, divine voice. It is said that because of this, Brahma got the power of creation.

The holy rosary of Mother Mary is a profound and meaningful form of prayer. Therein we contemplate the central mysteries of Christian life — the redemption of humankind through the incarnation, passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God’s son born of the blessed Virgin Mary. The rosary is a powerful form of traditional prayer; it involves our whole person.

 

The rosary employs repetition, an essential element in the language of love. As a result, we identify with our Lord and his blessed Mother by applying their saving deeds to our own life with its joys, sorrows and triumphs.
