Why do men and women get married?

Monday, 29, September 2014
Why do men and women get married?
People marry to get companionship they would not get if they were single. Nobody want to return to an empty home, which is what happens if you do not marry isolation can be killing. Studies in the West show that isolation can be harmful to health as heavy smoking or drinking.
It is only in the movies that bachelors look young and carefree. If you see men who are single after the age of 28 or so, you will find that they look older and more worn out than married persons of the same age. Scores of studies done in North America and Western Europe show that married people enjoy better health than singles. They also live longer . Take mental health for instance. Singles outnumber married individuals by three to one in mental hospitals. Outnumbering the singles, however, re widowed people , testifying to a fact that the death of a spouse is one of life’s most stressful events . However, data show that divorce can unbalance a marred individual. Divorced people in mental hospital outnumber widowed individuals one and a half times, some studies show
Single men are nearly twice as likely to commit suicide as married men. Divorced and widowed men, however, were even more suicidal than single men. Looking at this data it is worth examining why marriage contributes to health and longevity and why being single has the reverse effect. The answers is simple people who are married and especially those with children , drink and drive less, take drugs less, and engage in less risky behaviour. They feel  responsible for their wife and children while an unencumbered bachelor tends to be more reckless.
Research shows that married people drink least, the widowed, divorced or separated the most. Heavy drinkers are also heavy smokers.
Married people are happier than singles because man is a social animal and loneliness depresses him because human beings grow up with close relationships and cannot cope with isolation. A am lives in a family for many years after he is born,; in school and college, he has friends. When he begins a job , he has office colleagues. But it is only at home as a bachelor that he is all alone. He cannot endure that . that is why you find men getting married soon after they begin working.
Finally marriage derives its strength from a human being’s need to perpetuate himself beyond death by producing children. This evolutionary need is so strong that even an enlightened thinker like Bertrand ‘Russel wrote that people unable to have children begin to find life meaningless because there is nothing to connect them with a distant future when they would not be alive.  (Courtesy Idea exchange)
Reflect upon your present blessings, or which every man has many-not upon your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.
I hereby resolve.
I will be cheerful; I will not let little things irritate me-to make me miserable, and others near me and depressed.
I will be thoughtful. I will be ever mindful of my tongue, which may at an unguarded moment hurt someone with a word carelessly spoken.
I will be myself. I will not be a copycat, because I admire some one’s dress and personality.
I will look for the good in others. No one is perfect, nor is anyone unalterably bad. There is at least one saving grace, I will learn to find it.
I will cultivate laughter. I will learn to laugh at myself. Life can be lived better, if it is liberally sprinkled with genuine humour .
Quote from the True charm and power of Vedanta
If so much meditation , so much other spiritual practices, become the cause of the realisation of the Atman, then the Atman becomes reduced to bring an effect-relative and finite-and therefore, non-eternal. Can a finite lamp of knowledge, or awareness, or consciousness, illumine the infinite light of Pure consciousness? Can a torch, however big, however powerful, help to illumine the sun? on the contrary , it is the sun that illumines and overwhelms that torch and all other big and small light sources in the solar system. Similarly , far from the mind, through through mediation and other spiritual exercises, however deep and profound they be, illuminating or revealing the Atman, it is the Atman that overpowers the puny light of the mind and illumines it through and through . for the Atman, according to the Upanishads, is of the very nature of Pure Consciousness, infinite, non-dual and undecaying. All the Upanishads ecstatically sing in chorus this characteristic of the Atman, and present it as the highest. Truth about man and the universe. The Kataha Upanishad therefore, presents the Atman is a piece of sublime music. As the Lights of all lights
“There (in the Atman) the sun does not illumine, nor the moon, nor the stars, nor these lightening, mush less the (terrestrial) fire; when  that (Atman) shines, everything else gets illumined from .That by the light all this (universe) is lighted.

IF HE EXIST

I drive joy There was a doctor in Benaras who spent 7 minutes in the morning and evening for mediation on God. Knowing this, his colleagues and friends laughed at him. One day they argued that he was wasting seven precious minutes on something, which he had been misled into believing. The doctor replied, “Well, if God does not exist, I agree that I am wasting seven minutes a day. But, if He exists? I am afraid you are wasting your entire lifetime. I prefer to waste seven minutes rather than a lifetime. Why should you grudge me the 7minutes joy that I derive 4m.

Aging Gracefully

Monday, 22, September 2014
Aging Gracefully
Ageing is a natural process . Accept this fact and make the best of it at every age and stage.
Here are few tips:
Make use of your time. Put your wisdom, experience and your capabilities to good use. A community always needs volunteers for teaching children, narrating them stories from our classics, the Panchatantra, the Mahabharata or the Ramayana. It is a wonderful way of passing on some wisdom and getting joy. The enjoyment is on both sides.
Develop a hobby , something you enjoy doing, for the sake of doing . writing , painting, paying, gardening or music are some subjects.
Don’t be back seat driver, allow your children to use their judgement and choice, instead of constant interference and advice.
When they need advice an ask for it, then do give it. Only then it is valued accepted.
Be generous in your behaviour, in your actions , in your thoughts. When you forgive someone,  you are doing yourself a service.
Many physical problems stat in the mind. When we hold a grudge, it makes us sick. It harms us more than them.
Don’t be a grumbler . look at what good in a situation, instead of what was wrong. Some of us are always gloomy and spread gloom. Regular exercise. Even if you have not done it before, it is never to lat to start and the benefit starts from day one. A morning walk is most refreshing.
Smile a little more. It adds beauty to your face. Do look god and feel good. Every age has its beauty and charm. There is nothing more beautiful than the sight of a well turned out grandmother or a grandfather. (Courtesy : Better Life)
Reading
For general improvement , a man should read whatever his immediate inclination prompts him to; though if he has a science to learn, he must regularly and resolutely advance . what we red with inclination makes a stronger inclination. If we read without inclination half the mind is employed in fixing the attention so there is but half to be employed on what we read. If a man begins to read in the middle of a book, and feels an inclination to go on, let him not quit to go to the beginning  He may , perhaps not feel again, the inclination.
Nature creates merit, and fortune brings it into play
Method and dispatch govern the world
Quote from the true charm and power of Vedanta
And you become strongest when  you surrender all your strength to that great breeze of Grace that blows all the time. For He alone is; we are only just a spark of that divine fire. We have not to ru after, to pine after, Divine Grace; we have only to become grace-worthy. And that grace-worthiness if what one gets by achieving manliness through a life of self reliance, hard work, and struggle ot develop character strength. This takes us closer and closer to that final spiritual revolution in total self-surrender=praptti or sarnagati
When the mind is dominated by nature’s powers of tamas and rajas, sarangati or self-surrender, if practised, will not be genuine. It is best then to practise purusakara, or self-reliance, accompanied by a general feeling or devotion and dedication to God. But, when the mind rises to the level of sattwa, or even satwa –dominated rajas, it gets the capacity for self-surrender and the appreciation of Divine Grace. It is at this level that bhakti shines at tis purest and best, and human life reaches the level of spontaneity, naturalness and effortlessness. The Srimad Bhagavatam gives a beautiful picture of such a life, in its exposition of the nature of Bhagavatttama, the best among the devotees , by the Navyagindrss
‘He is the best among the devotees of Hari(God) , who sees the Blessed Lord as the Self in all beings (Shiva),and all beings in the Blessed Lord as their Self

Approachability

Monday, 15  September 2014

Approachability
Being at ease with ourselves helps others be at ease with us. We can give no greater gift to others than putting them at ease.
The above saying reflect the approachability principle you put yourselves questions, such as ; Have I ever met anyone famous ? What was it like? Was it exciting to me or did it turn out to be surprisingly ordinary? Was disappointed then, or w2as it even better than I expected? Did I connect with the person, or was I treated like a nuisance? Or was I so intimidated that I was unable to even try to talk to the person? The quality of any first time meeting experience –whether or not people are famous-depends largely on their approachability.
For that matter, what about you? Can the people closest to your talk to you about nearly anything? When was the last time someone brought you bad news? Or strongly disagreed with your point of view on an issue? Or confronted you concerning something you did wrong? It has been a while , you may not be a very approachable person
Some people treat the idea of becoming approachable as frivolous; it’s a nice thing if one can be bothered to cultivate it. But truly it’s much more than that, it is powerful asset to have  in one’s relational toolbox.
How to put people at ease.
To be approachable. it is not enough to love people in theory . the need is to generate personal warmth towards the people you meet. As Christian Bovee said. “Kindness is a language the dumb can speak and the deaf can hear and understand” You must be able to appreciate people for who they are and what they have to offer . appreciating the differences of others can do the same for  you
Approachable people display a consistency of mood. They are even-keeled and predictable. You know what you’re going to get because they are basically the same every time you see them. Although , approachable people are emotionally steady that does not men they expect others to be that way. Consequently, they tune in to the moods and feelings of others. And they fast adjust how they relate to others.
Approachable people are honest about their abilities and shortcomings. They are wiling to be told not what they want to hear but what they need to hear. They are also able to forgive easily and fast ask for forgiveness. It makes people humble and authentic . so make yourself approachable.
Quote from the True Charm and Power of Vedanta
‘We see as human being, that all our knowledge which is called rational is referred to consciousness….. At the same time, there is a very great part of my existence of which I am not conscious….When the food is manufactured into blood, it is done  unconsciously; when out of the blood all the different part of my body are strengthened, it is done unconsciously . and yet it is I who am doing all this ..How do I know that I do it, and nobody else?.....because it can be demonstrated that almost every action of which we are now unconscious can be brought up t the plane of consciousness…..What does this show? That the function which are beneath consciousness are also performed by us only we are doing it unconsciously
‘We have , then tow planes in which the human mind works . First is the conscious plane, in which all work is always accompanied with the feeling of egoism. Next comes the unconscious plane, where al work is unaccompanied by the feeling of egoism…
“There is a still higher plane upon which the mind can work. It can go beyond consciousness. Justas unconscious work is beneath consciousness, so there is another work which is above consciousness , and which is also not accompanied with the feeling of egoism
“The field of reason , or of the conscious workings of the mind, is narrow and limited. There is a little circle within which human reason must move. It cannot go beyond . Every attempt to go beyond is impossible; yet it is beyond this circle of reason that there lies all the humanity holds most dear. All these questions, whether there is an immortal soul, whether there is a God, whether there is any supreme intelligence guiding this universe or not, are beyond the field of reason. Reason can never answers this questions. What does reason say? It says, “I am an agnostic. I do not know either yea or nay. “ Yet these questions are so important to us. Without proper answer to them, human life would be purposeless. All our ethical theories , all our moral attitudes all that is good and great in human nature have been moulded upon answers that have come from beyond that circle  it is very important therefore, that we should have answers to these questions. If life is only a short play, if the universe is only a “fortuitous combination of atoms’, then why should I do good to others? Why should there is be mercy, justice, or fellow feeling? The best thing for this world would be to make hay while the sun shines, each man for him self…
To get reason out of the mass of incongruity we call human life, we have to transcend our reason; but we must do it scientifically, slowly, by regular practice; and we must cast of all superstition.
We must take up the study of the super-conscious state of just as any other science. On reason we must lay our foundation; we must follow reason as far as it leads and when reason falls, reason itself will show us the way to the highest plane. When you hear a man say, “I am inspired” and the “talk irrationally , reject it. Why? Because these three state-instinct” reason, and super-consciousness, or the unconscious , conscious and super-conscious states-belong t one and the same mind. There are not three minds in one man, but one state of it developing into the others instinct develops into reason and reason into the transcendental consciousness; therefore, not one of the states contradicts the others. Real inspiration never contradict reason but fulfil it.

Very difficult to teach without kindness.
It is very difficult to teach anything without kindness. Pupils should feel that the teacher wants to help them, wants them to improve , is interested in their growth, is sorry for their success, and sympathetic with their inadequacies.

I am the unfortunate thief!
Once Swami Vivekanands met a monk in the Himalayas during his wandering days. Swamiji sat buy the monk and started conversing with him on spiritual matters. In the course of their talk a reference was made to the famous Pawhari Baba of gahzipur, and the famous story of a thief that was connected with him. The monk narrated the incident with interest. He said; One night a thief entered the small chamber of Baba and stole a bundle of clothes. When the thief went out of the chamber, somehow . Baba woke up and made some sound. The thief ran away with the bundle of clothes . sensing some unusual movement outside , Baba ran out to see what had happened . Seeing Baba run behind the their left the bundle and escaped. Baba understood the situation and was much discouraged to observe the poor man, running away without the bundle of clothes . baba ran behind the thief caught hold of him and gave the bundle. Such was Baba’s compassion to poor people Saying this the monk took a few deep  breaths, and in tears he asked. “Swamiji, do you know the last part of the story? Obviously Swamiji did not know. The monk said again. I am that unfortunate thief -Courtesy Vedanta Kesari
Rich are great when!
The rich are not great for their riches, but they are great when they wisely and generously use their wealth to help the needy.
Quote from the True Charm and power of Vedanta
‘Instead of resorting to toxic procedures, we must consider, and possibly recommend, special attitudes, habits and environmental conditions the first cotton to be considers is aloneness. Alones may be viewed as a partial sensory deprivation….. He has more possibility of listening his inner self, to come in contact with his inner resources, and with some manifestations of this primary process. Unfortunately , aloneness is not advocated in our modern from of educating adolescents. On the contrary , gregariousness and popularity are held in high esteem.
Aloneness should not be confused with painful loneliness or with withdrawal or constant solitude…
The Struggle to Become Grace –Worthy
All these steps outlined by Silvanao Arieti to foster creativelty already from integral part of mediation and other sadhanas, or spiritual practices, fo the dynamics spirituality of the science of religion, the science of the spiritual growth of man, as contrasted with the static and formal piety of all ethical religions
