In a riverbed were two trees. One was the mighty banyan tree and the other was a reed. “You are spineless; look at me. Not only am I tall and stand erect, I also give shade to the weary,” it would often say to the reed. In the rainy season came a flash flood that uprooted the banyan tree.

The reed, however, survived as it simply bent with the current and when the floods receded, it became erect again. This is a story of the strength of humility. Another lesson the story contains is that it is only those systems that come in equilibrium with the surroundings that survive.

Evolution of natural systems normally takes place via branching when the system goes far from equilibrium or “becomes unwieldy”, and is governed by laws of non-linear thermodynamics. The branch that comes into equilibrium with the surrounding forces, survives and prospers.

Most times we are unhappy because of conflict within the self or with surroundings. To resolve the conflict or come “in equilibrium”, we should be able to sense our surroundings. The first mechanism for happiness is, therefore, to become acutely aware of the surroundings and corresponding forces.

This means developing a sensitive mind and increasing one’s awareness. Both these are produced by making our minds powerful through Yoga. A powerful mind is a great information processor and, hence, can process signals and information from surroundings efficiently.

Without awareness, the interaction with the forces is only a one-way affair, that is, we are controlled by them.

Seekers not escapists

Spirituality is the science that teaches one to understand life in greater depth. It is mind management to maintain balance.

If we cannot manage the mind and thoughts well, life loses its balance. Real courage is the coming together of two things: the mental strength to face anything, and compassion. Those who charge spiritual life with being a form of escapism have preconceived ideas. Knowledge cannot be enforced on anyone.

It can be imparted to someone who is receptive; knowledge then dawns within that person. Someone with a blocked nose cannot enjoy a flower’s fragrance. Can one blame the flower?

True seekers are not using spirituality as a pretext for escaping their responsibilities. They work day and night selflessly to serve society. They are taught to meditate and do selfless work.

There are many couples who, after marriage, volunteer to do selfless service. On the other hand, there are many individuals and organisations that create problems both for their own families and for society by not discharging their duties. Instead of taking on the responsibilities of others, they try to escape.

They are the ‘escapees,’ and not those who lead a spiritual life with an understanding of spiritual principles.

There are three factors that make one a human being: [1]The longing, after due deliberation, to understand the depth and significance of life.

The ability to love others.

---

The strength to enjoy and to spread joy among others.

Spirituality teaches us to realise these three. Only then does human life become fulfilled.

The doctrine of epistemology lays emphasis on our ability to cognise reality and its sources. As a theory of knowledge, epistemology also underlines methods of cognition, truth and ways of attaining it. Unlike materialism, epistemology looks for a higher reality as against apparent reality. It asserts that cognition is reflection of some mystical idea that needs to be discovered with the help of perception as things are not what they appear to be.

Cognition is the process of reflection and reproduction of reality in our mind. In the process, we acquire knowledge and the innate nature of truth. Jaimini’s Mimansa school believed in the self-inherent authority of the Vedas. Verbal testimony of shabda was regarded as the only means by which knowledge could be obtained.

At the root of cognition, there is a complicated dialectical process taking place in different forms, having its own degrees of development. Cognition begins with sense perception of things. Sensation, perception, notion, investigation and observation of phenomena are essential ingredients of epistemology. Sensations bring man in touch with the external world.

Discovering the flip side of reality is the main task of epistemology. What we take to be true is what we believe. What we believe is based upon our perception, what we perceive depends upon what we look for. What we look for, in turn, depends on what we perceive. What we perceive determines what we believe. What we believe determines what we take to be true. What we take to be true is our reality.

Hearty Laugh For Healthy Heart

Laughter, along with a strong sense of humour, ensures a healthy heart. A study shows that people with heart diseases are 40 percent less likely to laugh in a comic situation, compared to people of the same age without disease.

A lot of research is being done the world over on the effect of humour on health and it has been scientifically proved that with laughing body’s defence systems are stimulated anxiety is reduced and body is relaxed. Mental stress is associated with impairment of the protective lining of one’s blood vessels. This can cause a series of inflammatory reactions that lead to fat and cholesterol build up in the coronary arteries and ultimately lead to a heart attack. So, laughing off the stress is one of the best ways to ensure a healthy heart.

Humour is used extensively in alternative therapies. It is an essential part of psychotherapy treatment Joggers having a hearty laugh, early morning in parks is a common sight now  a days. More and more hospitals are waking up to the power of laughter and even planning to have humour specialist and humour therapy departments.

It is possible t incorporate laughter into our daily activities. Just as we do with heart-healthy exercises like taking the stairs instead of the lift. We can read something humorous or watch comic serial on TV

Laughter is considered one of the best muscle relaxants. It expands blood vessels and sends more blood to all parts of the body. It is also known to reduce the level of stress hormones.

The T-cells which fights infections become more active when a person laughs. Laughter is also said to increase immunoglobin A and B when you laugh, you inhale more oxygen and thus feel refreshed. This means that laughter stimulates blood circulation equivalent to any other standard aerobic exercise. Laughter exercise is best suited for people who do the work always sitting.

People suffering from mind related diseases like anxiety, depression, nervous breakdown and sleeplessness have benefited from the laughter therapy.

Laughter helps to control blood pressure by reducing the release of stress-related hormones and brings relaxation, It also helps in stopping the further progress of heart disease as it improves blood circulation and oxygen supply t the heart muscles.

Laughter increases the levels of endorphins in our bodies, which are natural painkillers. Endorphins releases as a result of laughter also help in reducing the intensity of pain in people suffering from arthritis, spondylitiies and muscular spasms, It is also said to give relief from migraine and headaches caused due to tension.

Laughter is considered a very good exercised as if improves lung capacity and oxygen levels in the blood. It helps in toning up the face muscles and improves facial expressions . when you laugh, your face becomes red due to an increase in blood supply , which nourishes the facial skin and makes it shine. Keep Trying Till You Succeed

If you check the list of Fortune 500 company bosses, you would find that many of them never even finished High School Education.

Look around, you will find that all the “well educated” Invariably do not get working for someone less “intelligent and “less educated then themselves , Why?

There are a number of reasons for this condition. Some “well educated “ and “intelligent person analyse a particular opportunity and find all sorts of reason why it does not work . By comparison the “less educated “ one just comes in and does it and succeeds! The reason is that he is too busy to do anything else. It never occurs to him to sit around and waste his time contemplating all day. He has no doubt and has an “ I can do “ mentality.

These well educated persons suffer from over talents. This means that he is good at most of anything he takes up. He can achieve proficiency at anything but he does not work at it consistently with persistence. He doesn’t know which of the many paths to take. Once he takes one, he changes the direction as soon as the going gets tough.

By comparison, there are some “less educated” who are only good at one thing and can do nothing else. Through focusing relentlessly on this one quality, they get astonishingly good result.

‘Well educated” won’t stoop to do little things. They won’t touch things that are beneath their dignity. They think that once they have a degree, the world is there for the asking.

Simple persons by comparison will do whatever it is to reach their goal, if their goal is money, they are single minded about it. They will just keep beating at it until they finally succeed. They are just too busy to stop. They will just keep going and going! They don’t know when to stop and one day they end up richer and more successful and these well educated” ones end up working for them!

Well educated person thinks the world owes him a living . he thinks something like “I have got a degree but i could not get a break. I am talented but I am ignored. you have either got to know someone or have money. And I don’t have either.

Here is a simple fact the “less educated “ know that the ‘well educated” one usually don’t . Success requires constant effort. Robust common sense, a set goal, persistence to achieve the object and will-power to withstand failures and setbacks.

You need “definiteness of purpose” Your need to decide on the one thing you really want and stick to it, until you get it Most people simply cannot do that . That is why they end up dissatisfied and unhappy.

These “Well educated “ ones don’t even use 10% of what they have got while “less educated give it all.

Don’t be over sensitive . Take chances Get defeated once in  while . regard everything as a learning experience. Keep on trying and you will succeed.

Wise thought

All truly wise thoughts have been thought already thousands of times. But to make them truly ours, we must think them over again honesty, till take root in our personal experience.

 Why Are Banana Leaves Considered Holy In Hinduism

Hinduism is a fascinating religion and it has meaningful ties with the elements of nature. Plants and animals have been mentioned innumerable times within our holy texts, for a variety of different reasons. All of them are directly related to the Gods and are considered important for their specific qualities.

We are all familiar with plants like tulsi, peepal, bel and a variety of flowers which are associated with each God. However there is another plant which is perhaps not that widely mentioned, but is equally significant to the above mentioned ones. The banana tree and more specifically its leaf, is considered to be holy. Let us find out why –

Significance Of Banana Leaves –

1. Bananas are known as ‘Kadali Phalam’ in Hinduism and the entire plant is considered to be holy. There are a number of reasons why the banana leaf is considered holy in Hinduism.

2. Rishi Durvasa’s wife was turned into a banana tree by his curse, when she had interrupted his sleep. Upon receiving the curse she pleaded as a compromise; that she be treated as a special and holy plant on earth. Durvasa granted her wish and since then banana leaves (and the plant) are considered auspicious in Hinduism.

3. Banana leaves are used to distribute prasad to devotees. The fruits are used as Naivedyam or food for the Gods. Banana tree trunks are used as decorations and pillars during religious festivals or cultural ceremonies, as they signify good luck and prosperity.

4. Lord Ganesh is another deity who is very fond of banana leaves and can be appeased by offering the same. Lord Vishnu and Maa Lakshmi are also given bananas as religious offerings.
