As thought guides all our bodily activities, so the Sages found that thought was the best medium for direction this life force. How little attention we pay to this great instrument which is placed in our hands by God Almighty! How often we abuse or misuse it! Yet our actions can never produce the best results until our thoughts are properly regulated. Only as we cease to dissipate our mental energies and are able to establish a balance between our outer and our inner activities between our body and our mind, can we hope to have either peace or strength.

            Every living being even the most insignificant has the same possibility of awakening this great life-force within himself. As a rule, however, we run after pleasure and power to try to gain these from the external universe. the result is that we are always rushing outward and we do not stop to think what we have within ourselves. Whenever a problem arise in our mind, our tendency is to go outside, we hasten to consult a book or some person, but the wise men tell us that we have within ourselves the key to all knowledge. In fact no one can give us knowledge beyond the point where our inner nature unfolded. We must there fore discover this inner store house of energy, and in our search it is best to deal first with that which is most immediate. courtesy self mastery

Financial worries and job loss are making many people lose their balance and emotional well-being. That is only one half of the picture — the other half is this: many of the world’s richest people have all the money they want, but their material prosperity has not assured them of peace and contentment. It is time, then, that we realise that happiness is in the mind, not in the objects we possess, not in our bank accounts.

Money can definitely give us lots of comforts; some people actually say money can buy anything — but money cannot buy us happiness. Money cannot buy us peace of mind. Money cannot assure us of our emotional well-being. I know many of us would love to have a million dollars. But let me ask you, if someone were to offer you a million dollars, would you give away both your eyes?

When you become aware of the ‘abundance’ in your own life, your attitude will change; your emotions will regain their lost balance and you will be prepared to face ‘lean’ and ‘dark’ days with a more positive and constructive attitude. What do I mean when I talk about ‘abundance’?

I refer not only to material wealth — in fact, I am quite sure that money is not the most valuable thing in our lives. The trouble with most of us is that we are so busy chasing after more — more money, more comforts, more opportunities — that we fail to appreciate what we have already. Count your blessings. And you will be filled with hope, optimism and faith that will help you face the challenges of life.

I drive joy There was a doctor in Benaras who spent 7 minutes in the morning and evening for mediation on God. Knowing this, his colleagues and friends laughed at him. One day they argued that he was wasting ten precious minutes on something, which he had been misled into believing. The doctor replied, “Well, if God does not exist, I agree that I am wasting ten minutes a day. But, if He exists? I am afraid you are wasting your entire lifetime. I prefer to waste ten minutes rather than a lifetime. Why should you grudge me the 10 minutes joy that I derive 4m.

Vedanta reaches that the less passion for work there is , the greater and more we work. If we read the lives of all the great workers of the world, we find that they were wonderfully calm men. Men and women of impulsive nature are restless and impatient, and so they cannot do great work and such, they cannot be steady workers they will lose their heads. Persons who are easily disturbed by passions like anger, jealously, hatred, ambition and selfishness, cannot accomplish much. They will shatter their nerves and eventually become useless. As we find in this country (in America) person who are impulsive , can do great work for the moment, but in the reaction, they break themselves in pieces. They suffer from nervous prostration. Therefore, self control is the secret of great work viz success in business, health and longevity. This we learn from Vedanta . What can be more practical or beneficial than to gain self-control and to exercise it in our everyday life?

Vedanta teaches how to be strong physically, mentally and spiritually. Physical strength proceeds from mental strength, and mental strength in its turn is the outcome of spiritual strength. Spiritual strength must be at the back of mental and physical strength, and that spiritual strength will come to those who live the right kind of life and understand d the laws that govern our lives . The knowledge of these laws will keep us free from mistakes, and this knowledge comes through the study of Vedanta. The practise of Raja Yoga will help us in acquiring that knowledge. that branch of Vedanta which is called the Raja Yoga, is the most practical of all applied sciences. Every step of this science depends entirely upon practice. It must enter into the daily life of every individual. take, for instance , one of the teachings of the Raja Yoga, the concentration . How absolutely helpful and necessary this power of concentration is ! Nothing can be achieved without it; no one can accomplish anything without possessing some amount of this power; no one can become a great artist; astronomer or physician, no one can have success, even in the Stock exchange, without this power of concentration. It is absolutely necessary for success in business, and this power we acquire through the practice of Raja Yoga.

Some time ago, someone brought a man to me. He was depressed and broken and wanted to commit suicide. Why? Because about five years ago, he was worth Rs 3,000 crore. Then he played in the stock market, things went a little wrong and his worth dived a little bit.… If you keep money in your pocket, it is great. But if it enters your head, it becomes misery because that is not its place.

Wealth is just one of the tools towards human well-being, not the whole of it. What we need in the world is not just ‘wealth creation’. We need to create well-being. Wealth means making the outside pleasant for ourselves. Money is just a means; it is not an end by itself. We are making it too big for nothing.

Is it bad? Is it good? It is neither; it is just a tool that we created. It is not the money that people want. It is just that money has become the means for what they consider as a better life. Everyone wants their life to be pleasant.

When we say pleasant, pleasantness happens in five different ways. If your body becomes very pleasant, we call it pleasure. If your mind becomes pleasant, we call it peace; if it becomes very pleasant, we call it joy. If your emotions become pleasant, we call it love; if they become very pleasant, we call it compassion.

If your life energies become pleasant, we call it bliss; and if they become very pleasant, we call it ecstasy. If your surroundings become pleasant, you call it success. This is all you want, isn’t it?

Money can only create external pleasantness, it cannot create inner pleasantness.

Value –Judging

The basic cause of most inharmonious human relationships is the tendency to impose our values on others. We want them to live by what we have decided is right , fair good, bad etc. if they do not confirm, we become resentful and angry. You must realize that there is nothing we can do to alter other peoples values, concepts or beliefs if their awareness is not ready to accept change. You are resisting their reality and desiring to see thins. Not as they are, but as you would like them to be. This is the point at which you start value judging.

Nothing can destroy a relationship or break off communications faster than value judging.

In order to stop value-judging , you should encompass the knowledge that all value-judgments of good and bad, right and wrong , fair and unfair are totally unfounded because everyone must inevitably do what they have to. This is all their present awareness will permit-no more , no less.

The scripture remind us that “As a man thinketh in his heart so is he”. You must stop value judging yourself, then you will stop others, and start loving both yourself and others. When you learn to love and appreciate yourself and others . when you learn to love and appreciate yourself, you will no longer be self-demanding, and self-critical and will project the attitude to the outside world.

As soon as you start living others as they are, the feeling will be reciprocal. Others will start loving you. They wont have any other choice. Think about it! Who are the people to whom you are most attracted? They are those you consider your close friends, the people who , no matter what they know about you, never pass value –judgments.

The secret of loving and being loved is to stop value judging –forever!

The Vedanta then, practically forms the scriptures of the Hindus and all systems of philosophy that are orthodox have to take it as their foundation. Even the Buddhists and Jains, when it suits their purpose, will quote a passage from the Vedanta as authority. All schools of philosophy in India although the claim to have been based upon the Vedas tool different names for their systems . the lat one, the system of Vyasa, took its stand upon the doctrines of the Vedas more than the previous system did, and made an attempt to harmonize the preceding philosophies such a s the Sankhya and the Naya, with the doctrines of the Vedanta . so it is especially called the Vedanta philosophy; and the Sutras of aphorisms of Vyasa are, in modern India, the basis of the Vedanta philosophy. Again these sutras of Vyayasa have been variously explained by different commentators. In general there are three sorts of commentators? In India how, from their introspection have arisen three system of philosophy and sects. One is the dualistic, or Davaita, a second is the qualified non-dualistic, or Vishishtadvaita, and a third is the non-dualistic, or Advaita. Of these the dualistic and the qualified non-dualistic include the largest number of the Indian people . the non dualistic are the paratively few in number .Now I will try to lay before you the ideas that are contained in all these three sects; but before going on I will make one remark-that these different Vedanta system have one common psychology and that is the psychology of the Sankhya system. The sankya psychology is very mush like the psychologies of the Nayaya and Vaiseshika system , differing only in minor particular

All the vedantiest agree on three points. They believe in God . in the Vedas reveled , and in cycles . We have already considered the Vedas . the belief about cycles is as follows. All matter throughout th universe is the outcome of oine primal matter called Askasha; and all force whatever gravitation, attraction or repulsion or life, is the outcome of one primal force called Prana. Prana acton on Asahsa is creating or projection the universe, At the beginning of cycle Askasha is mtion less, unmaanifested. Then Prana begins to act more and more, creating grosser and grosser froms out of Asahas –plants animals men, stars, and son. After an incalculable time this evolution ceases and involution begins, everything being resolved back through finer and finer forms into the original . Akasha and prana when a new cycle follows. Now there is some thing beyond Akasha and Prana. Both can be resolved into a third thing called Mahal-the Cosmis Mind. This Cosmic Mind does not create Akash and Prana, but changes itself into them.
