Great Saying

Quote from the True Charm and Power of Vedanta

Great Saying

If there is a small hole at the bottom of a jar of water, the whole water will leak out. Similarly, if thee is the smallest tinge of worldliness in the aspirant , all his exertions will come to naught.

The soiled mirror never reflects the rays of the sun; similarly those who are impure and unclean at heart and are deluded by Maya never perceive the glory of the Lord. But the pure in heart see the Lord as the clear mirror reflects the sun.

Money can fetch you bread alone. Do not consider it as your sole end and aim.

He is truly a man to whom money is only a servant; but, on the other hand , those who do not know how to make a proper use of it, hardly deserve to be called men.

The sun can give heat and light to the whole world, but he cannot do so when the clouds shut out his rays. Similarly, as long as egotism veils the heart, God cannot shine upon it.

The young bamboo can be easily bent, but eh full grown bamboo breaks when it is bent with force. It is easy to bend the young heart towards God, but the untrained heart of the old escapes the hold whenever it is so drawn.

Men are of two classes –men in name only (Manush) and the awakened men(Man-hush) . Those who thirst after God alone belong to the latter class those who are mad after ‘women and gold’ are all ordinary men-men in name only.

Gita as a stress buster

SURENDRA PAL

I was a habitual worrier, always worrying about something or the other. It was only when I started reading the Bhagwad Gita that I realised the truth in what Gandhiji had said, ‘The Gita is the universal mother.… Her door is wide open to anyone who knocks.’ The Gita contains not only deep philosophical concepts but also the principles and techniques that, if put into practice with full sincerity, are extremely effective in unimaginable physical, mental and spiritual ways. The verse that appealed the most to me helps me get rid of the worry habit, ‘Abandoning all duties, take refuge in Me alone. I shall liberate you from all sins, do not grieve’ — 18:66. In his commentary on the Gita, Swami Chinmayananda writes of this verse, ‘This is the noblest of all stanzas in the Divine Song and it is also the most controversial.…’ He proceeds to explain the term ‘dharma’ and concludes that the context of this verse, ‘renouncing all dharmas’ means ending the ego completely.

SRadhakrishnan says that we should completely surrender to His will and take shelter in His love, ‘Surrender is the easiest way to self-transcendence.’ He quotes Ruysbroeck, ‘He only is fit to contemplate the Divine light who is the slave to nothing, not even to his virtues.’

The verse conveys that in order to get rid of all negative tendencies, unhealthy thoughts, anxiety and worries, one should totally surrender to the Higher Power, which implies opening one’s mind without any reservations and doubts, to the inflow of divine consciousness. The needed guidance will come spontaneously.

The way to peace and Blessdness

Quote from the true charm and power of Vedanta

The way to peace and Blessdness

Unselfishness should be our constant Ideal, whether we are able to follow it successfully or not. It should be a burning passion in our hearts, for unselfishness is one of the greatest purifiers. We must struggle as long as life remains in the body. That is all we can do ; what right have we to the fruits of our actions?

It is not possible to serve the Lord or his children unless we are thoroughly unselfish. However difficult this may seem in the beginning we must not grow discouraged and abandon the Ideal. The state of selflessness is only attained through constant struggle with the lower self; and even if we fail a hundred times that should not crash us, but like good soldiers we should get up with fresh vigor and struggle on. Determination and perseverance enable us to transcend the limitations of the ego and attain final victory.

It is always a very great pity when people miss an opportunity for higher things out of thoughtlessness or weakness . But everything depends on Her will and grace. Bondage and freedom both are in the Divine Mother’s hands . those who pray humbly and earnestly, theirs is the kingdom of God. Egotism lends no access there. It only prevents our going to that blissful adobe. As long as this demon in the form of ego rules in us, so long all our striving for spiritual thins proves fruitless. I am understanding more and more every day why all great sages laid such stress on this; “Man has no other enemy than his ego” It is absolutely true. When this great enemy is conquered, then alone one realizes  how majestic the soul is courtesy way to peace blessedness.

Thank You, No Regrets

-ATUL SEHGAL

Life is a mixed bag. Good times are interspersed with adversities and many opportunities. Some of us are deeply regretful of missed opportunities, follies or blunders that cost us heavily through the course of our lives. Yet, there are others who always appear to be thankful for what life gave them, never regretful for what they did not get or what they missed.

Regret comes naturally to some persons, but to others, it is equally natural never to fret over past mistakes or to grieve over past or present adversities. Being regretful is being regressive; it dissipates your mental and physical energies.

Regret is as fruitless as worry. The only difference between regret and worry: the former is in the context of the past and the latter in the context of future. Regret is unhappiness with some action or outcome. We always act as per our best understanding in a given situation. How others react or respond to a man’s actions is also beyond his control. Fretting or regretting, therefore, is against the immanent and inviolable laws of the universe. To regret is to rebel against these divine laws.

We should not regret anything in life. Regret is different from remorse. Remorse is a feeling of penance for the wrongs committed by a person. It does not depress his mind that maintains its even keel. The term regret is also used in common parlance as an apology, which is only proper as a courteous expression in human interaction, but regret as an expression of fretting over past events does no one any good.

So, be regretful about nothing because in the divine setting, whatever happened finally was for your ultimate betterment.

Fate or Free will

Quote from the True Charm and Power of Vedanta

Fate or Free will

There are in our country any numbers of fatalists who maintain that the unseen hand of Fate controls everything and no effort on our part will make the difference. There are also those who believe in the supremacy of man’s free will and say that everything  is possible with self effort.

Some are of the view that man is the victim of circumstances. Others argue that man has the power is change circumstances with the power of his personality . it is said that self-effort and fate are like the two wheels of chariot the two blades of a par of scissors . but “the scribbling on the forehead”, “the effort of the stars”, the fruit of action” are words which we use to explain our failure in any action . Whatever there is no denying the fact that we ourselves have to strive to uplift our life. We have to change forward with courage and daring . we have to struggle with trust in our own effort. There is saying “Six steps are human effort the seventh is divine grace ! Has anybody come up in life without the sprit of enthusiasm to work. Without relentless effort!

Can you ever drive anything to the goal of success simply by waiting for the favour of Destiny or Fortune, and not doing anything? No task is possible in that manner . Such an attitude makes a coward of man. it makes him morally a slave to evil. People commit errors because of their own weakness. but they attribute the errors to unfavorable fate, to ill-luck to the influences of planets and stars! One such person slipped because of his carelessness but blamed the slippery ground, and found fault with his fate.

If thee were really something like fate which placed obstructions on our way ot success . we could certainly overcome them by our own sincere struggle; by arousing the inner spirit which is latent in all of us.

If fate were so powerful , we would not be speaking at all about virtues, vices, or the power of the soul. Human beings are not like logs of wood or bricks of clay.

No man can ever lift himself up from the mire of misery if he clings to the attitude. “Fate is responsible for this kind of act on my part. I am not responsible for my actions. I am only being helplessly pushed by the unseen hand of Fate” It is man’s ignorance, which makes him feel that he is weak, and that his is ever dependent on the invisible hand of fate. This ignorance will lead him only to his degradation. To utilize the present is to conquer the fate.

We are all interconnected. As members of one large family, when one of us suffers, we all suffer. The global community is experiencing an unprecedented challenge. We are all looking for stability, reassurance and comfort.

As our physical, mental and emotional health bears the impact of the global pandemic, let us remember to enhance our spiritual health, and our spiritual capacity, as it will help us get through these challenging times. We can enhance our spiritual capacity through meditation.

Meditation is the means by which we experience the peace, love and stillness within us. In its truest form, meditation is about connecting with the Source of all love, which is God. It is about experiencing God’s love for ourselves. When we experience this love, we are nourished, uplifted and elevated. This love heals us, and changes our perspective of life, the world around us and, ultimately, it transforms us. When we experience God’s love for ourselves, it becomes easy to experience God’s constant presence in our lives.

While meditation does not eliminate the problems and challenges of life, it helps us cultivate a wider perspective. The spiritual wisdom that we gain as we go within helps us understand the bigger picture of life, which enables us to look at difficulties in a different way and, thus, respond in a calmer, relaxed manner. We learn, through meditation that life’s panorama is constantly in flux. All things in life must come to pass. All challenges in life will subside in time.

The Way to Peace and Blessedness

Quote from the True Charm and Power of Vedanta

The Way to Peace and Blessedness

These are also living shrines, there are living gods. But they are not fixed in one spot. No: they encircle a vaster region. they have created such an atmosphere of purity and peace that their every thought , their very existence brings peace and blessedness. They carry the atmosphere of God wherever they go and people find blessing just from their presence . nor are these isolated exceptions. What they have done, you can do and everyone can do. The wise who know, who have realised these things for themselves they say it can be done. There is not a mortal so defective in his spiritual power, that he cannot do this.

A true teacher is like a fountain that goes on and on, and people come with little tumblers, pitchers, pails, but they can never exhaust the fountain, for God’s power is inexhaustible. Lecturing and talking, however, are the smallest part of his work. The main thing is to sow the seed. Those who are ready feel the living equality of it just from the presence without words. Words express very little but the sprit is felt in the core of the heart.

The company of holy pure souls is the greatest help in the spiritual life. They alone can help in the spiritual life. They alone can give you true rest and courage if you grow weary on the way . the real saints the unselfish pure characters are lie the spring. As at the touch of spring new life comes to all things so these teachers, wherever they go, carry the atmosphere of purity and holiness and bring new life and strength . Having themselves crossed the ocean of Samsara or wordiness, they help others to cross it, without thought of receiving any retrun , but just because they love to do good. A sanity character, one who lives here for the sake of others , radiates everywhere cheerfulness light and blessing.

Those who keep their life pure. Who live in pure thought, they are always cheerful. The sign of spiritual progress is cheerfulness.  A man who is truly spiritual is always full of bless. When we begin to feel this, we may know that we are advancing. Whoever finds his light within is ever blissful.

Really Pure And Simple

BRAHMA KUMARIS

Each thought we create, every word we speak and every action we perform are responsible for radiation of non-physical energy, vibration, into the universe. An important aspect in us that influences the quality of this vibration is the intention behind each thought, word and action.

When the intention is pure, positive and unconditional, positive vibrations of peace, love, good wishes, happiness and truth get transmitted.

Those who experience this positive energy vibration from us are reminded of their personal positive qualities, even if these qualities are different from ours, and get inspired to imbibe the same and put them into practice, although this may not even be our conscious intention in the first place, we just have a general pure, positive, intention towards everything and everyone around us.

On the other hand, when the intention is negative and impure, it is as if we bring other people, surroundings and nature down. Both these types are energy exchanges, but one is positive and the other is negative.

The above process happens even when we are quiet, not creating any thoughts and not speaking or performing any actions. The higher the quality of the activity inside the mind and intellect and, in general, in our lives, even if they are inactive at a particular point of time, the higher the quality of the energy radiated.

It seems as if we are constant spiritual energy radiators and radiate our personality all the time, even while we sleep. The purer our personality, the purer this radiation.

Path to Devotion

Quote from the True Charm and power of Vedanta

Path to Devotion

Quote from the true charm and power of Vedanta

REALIZATIOIN of the Supreme is the goal and we are all going towards that goal. But as we follow the path, we are too often led away by temptations and stop to enjoy this or that; so we lose time. Those, however, who have true devotion and discrimination walk steadily onward and never stop until they reach the goal.

Until we go to our real home with the Divine Mother we are not safe. This universe is very dangerous. We may think we are safe, but how often are we carried away by our senses and follow them blindly. Whole –hearted devotion to the ideal is most necessary . if we would avoid the dangers  in the path. By living the life we get certain powers. If we pay attention to these and turn our thoughts away from the Ideal. That is like stopping by the way side and we may not reach the goal, But the true disciple will not stop. He knows that he must go home without delay, otherwise he may be overtaken by storm or evening may come sad hide the way.

Under no circumstances must we sacrifice the spiritual life; it can be lived silently, more silently than any other kind of life. No one need know what we think of our Ideal; as Sri Ramakrishna used to sing;

Which means that the spiritual life need not be lived with any noise or with any outward show. It can all be kept hidden in the heart.

Grace at the Workplace

Economic Times in The Speaking Tree | Spirituality | ET

By Mukul Shri Goel

At the workplace, divine grace is available around us. It is up to us, as seekers, to recognise this grace. God’s grace becomes available as guidance and blessings from mentors and managers, as guidance from technical literature and via saints and scriptures, as positive energy from lamps lit as invocation and through virtues like forgiveness and patience.

It is divine grace that protects us from all kinds of sufferings, brings us in contact with true and spiritual friends, gets reflected as selflessness in our work, and provides us with basics like food and other essentials.

Divine grace, in one of its highest forms, becomes bhakti, the basis of our spiritual connection to God. Once we experience bhakti, devotional love of God, peace and eternal happiness will follow.

God, who is all-pervading, can be remembered periodically even at our workplace by connecting to Him whenever we feel like. We can ask for protection from sufferings of body, mind and soul, for spiritual guidance, for blessing us with love and for our liberation.

We can share our thoughts and feelings for we will not be judged; we can only hope for more grace. Because divine grace is for everyone, multiple ways exist to access it.

While the devotional connect to grace is through surrender, the wise connect to it also through meditation, and the more active seekers access it through selflessness in their work. To them, work is worship.

Path to Devotion

Quote from the True Charm and power of Vedanta

Path to Devotion

Sometimes the task appears very hard, as if there were no way out of it. But nothing can remain permanent in this world; the cloud vanishes and again life becomes hopeful. We must thee for stand like a rock under all circumstances. Let everything come and go, but try to remain always unmoved. Be bold and face the truth. If you have an Ideal. Give your life for the realization of it. We must sacrifice our lives for our Ideal. That is the only way to worship the Ideal. Not wakens not hypocrisy, but sincere love and strength will make us worship Him truly.

Move on add do not look back to see what happens to anyone. Then stand like me may die in this moment. But that will not do any harm to this vast world. Truth is deathless and that will shine forever. Worship the truth and die for it. Remember always that the present life is the result of past thoughts and deeds; the future is going to be according to the present. So our future depends entirely upon us. Past will be washed off by the present life. Curtsey path to devotion

Living a Divine Life

The Speaking Tree |  India | ET

By SWAMI SIVANANDA

To sublimate the human in man into the divine, to express this sublimation in his daily, hourly life in thought, word and deed — that is truly divine life. To speak the truth at all costs, to speak sweetly with love, to practise nonviolence, to behold the Lord in all forms is divine life.

To be ever in communion with the Lord by annihilating mineness and egoism through faith, devotion and self-surrender is divine life. Repetition of the Lord’s Names will purify the mind. But along with these, you must also practise vichara. Real beauty, real joy can be had only in God who eternally lives in your own heart.

Every attempt to cultivate divine virtues, selflessness, straightforwardness, courage, serenity, generosity, mercy and self-restraint, in reality, is divine life or life in God. Keep up a balanced mind in success and failure, censure and praise, honour and dishonour, gain and loss, heat and cold.

Man’s knowledge should embrace the whole universe. There is nothing in the universe that man cannot know. It is the love of knowledge for its own sake, not because it brings us food, not because it enables us to practise a profession, but love of truth for its own sake. That is the destiny and glory of man. Man’s life must not be confined to the limits of his family but should take in the entire village or town, nay, the whole state, the whole country, the whole earth and the whole universe. Therefore, when he loves knowledge for its own sake and his love is universal and boundless, then God is pleased because man attains the summit of his glory.

Healing of body and Mind

Quote from the True Charm and power of Vedanta

Healing of body and Mind

Convinced that he is not the body and that he does not possess it; the wise man attains oneness with his higher Self, and casts aside all thought of himself as the doer. Samhita

It is more necessary for the soul to be cured than the body, for it is better to die then to live unworthily –Epictetus.

The soul gives sight to the eyes; He who gives sight to the soul is the great lord. Therefore one should worship Him with supreme love who does kindness to the soul.  Saiv Siddkantam

Live in this world as if God and your soul only were in it; that your heart may be a captive to no earthy thing.

Man’s life is interrelated. His physical life is so absolutely dependent on his moral and his spiritual life that unless he pay proper heed to these, he can never hope to be healthy . whenever we violate the spiritual law and try to find a short cut to happiness, the fibre of our moral being is injured and we begin to feel pains and aches in the physical body. When these conditions continues and we do not try to remove them, a mark is made on the mind. Doubt despair, despondency arise and these react again on the body. The only healing which can be effective then, will be one which brings a regenerating influence into the mind and restores it to the normal state.

Path of Devotioin

Quote from the True Charm and power of Vedanta

 Path of Devotioin

Take courage and have infinite patience. Patience will conquer everything- Have wonderful determination and say boldly. “I must live a true life!” Show your strength and say fearlessly so the world. “Get thee off, proud world! I do not want thee. I do not need thy help” Bring out all your strength and repeat again and again, “I am strong! I am pure! I am true!” You will see how quickly the clouds of ignorance will vanish and how soon your pure heart will be filled, with Divine love and light.

Fear? Whom to fear? What is there for us to fear? Shall we show our back to the enemy? No, never! Let us die on the battlefield like heroes rather then live a life of slavery-He can fight boldly who has a sword of wisdom and a shield of purity.

Experience Life Fully

The Speaking Tree |  India | ET

By K S RAM

Senses, the creation of God, are, in fact, a portal to a full life. They are, therefore, of value to the spiritual and the aspiritual. Such full experience of life through the senses is the privilege of everyone. Where, then, does one err, and how can the senses be used in an optimal way for a fuller experience of life? The error most commonly lies in fragmented use of the senses.

This could be, at times, a fallout of education. We are taught, for instance, that the rose is red. In the mind, rose gets associated with red. It gets restricted to red. The fact is that the redness is only general; in fact, no two red roses are of the same hue. The shades are endless. The eye must be sensitive to the subtle differences in colour and be able to see a rose as the rose, something unique.

Poet Hopkins called this focused habit of appreciating particularity as seeing the ‘this-ness of this’. The rose is more than mere colour. If you see the rose only for its beautiful colour, you are, in effect, under-experiencing it, because you are using only your eyes, only one of the five senses. The rose has an architecture, a feel, fragrance, sweetness, a whisper.

Did you experience these? Did you hear the whisper? Experience the rose fully. Bend down to it, dive into it. You may see the cosmos in it. See yourself in it. Commune with the rose as if it is God. When you learn to do this, you will stop using the expression of ‘seeing’ a rose. You will use the more comprehensive expression of ‘experiencing’ the rose (or any other thing).
