Concentration of Mind

One day Swami Vivekanda was walking along a beach where some people were swimming in the water and oithers were sunbathing. A little while later, he noticed some boys trying to shoot rubber balls which were bouncing up and down on the waves . he stopped and watched them for some time and noticed that not one of them was able to hit the target.

The boys saw him standing there and called out excitedly “Swamiji, can you hit this target?”

Swami Vivekananda had never touched a guan in his life but now he piced up the gun and aimed at one of the bobbing balls. He bit it right on. The boys were amazed that someone who had never handled a gun could shoot like that. Thinking that is may be ‘beginner’s luch’ they asked him to have another go . again he effortlessly hit the target. They were even more surpirsed and begged him to do it again. This time also he did noit disappoint them in fact. To clear any doubts they might have had, he hit the balls seven times in a row. The boys were full of curiosity as to how did it. They requested him to share his secret with them.

Swami Vivekanda explined. “It is very simple . Even more unsteady than a ball lossing oin the waves is the human mind . when a person has full contorl over the fluctins of the mind, feats like the one you have just seen are childs’s play. If your mind is not concentrated, you cannot achieve your aim, whatever it may be

Freedom in Boindage

According to the Hindu scriptures, the ideal man is the who is in the world but not in it. That is to say, he is a person who does everything he is required to d, but he does not feel that he is doing anything.

Is such a thing possible? If a person is doing anything, how can be escape the feeling that he is doing something or other? It is ridiculous to suggest that he will not feel that he is doing anything. If he feels that way. He cannot be a normal person., something must be wroing with him.

What is the idea the Hindu scriptures are trying to project? They are trying to say that you should have no wish of  you rown. If you do something; try to feel that God is the doer and not you. You are a mere tool at His hands; He is using you as He thinks best. You make a complete surrender to God and you are happy that He is making use of you.

This can happen only when you are totally selfless. That is to say, you are a perosn who lives for God, or if you prefer, for othes. Because you are selfless, you have no wish of  your own except to please God or do some good to tohers,. You expect no reward, your only concern is to do your best. Havng done tha, you are happy. I drive joy There was a doctor in Benaras who spent 7 minutes in the morning and evening for mediation on God. Knowing this, his colleagues and friends laughed at him. One day they argued that he was wasting seven precious minutes on something, which he had been misled into believing. The doctor replied, “Well, if God does not exist, I agree that I am wasting seven minutes a day. But, if He exists? I am afraid you are wasting your entire lifetime.  Think not you are weak

Our minds have infinite power Now, how to understand this and put it into use? First of all, we have to understand that we are no weak we are strong and we can be great. Never talk about weakness. If you think that you are weak, weak you will become. What you think you are!

There is a nice story told by a saint to illustrate this. Once upon a time there lived a ferocious lioness in a dense forest. She was pregnant. One day, she was going I search of a prey. Just on the outskirts of the forest, a shepherd boy was grazing his flock of sheep. The lioness at once jumped on the flock for a prey. Alas ! The fall was too much for her. She gave birth to a cub and died.

The shepherded boy was observing this scene from a distance He was attracted to the helpless but beautiful lion cub. He took it home and started rearing the baby lion along with his sheep. His flock of sheep was affectionate towards the lion cub. The cub grew with them jumping and playing happily. Like the sheep, the cub bleated and ate grass. In course of time it grew into a huge lion but thought itself to be a sheep

One day another lion came in search of prey and was astonished to find a lion amidst sheep. It went near the sheep lion. But the sheep-lion got frightened and ran bleating like a sheep. The lion tried to get near the sheep-lion to tell him that he was not a sheep but a lion. But to no avail. The lion now patently waited for an opportunity to catch the sheep-lion

The sheep-lion replied timidly. No, no I am a sheep, and started bleating in fear.

The lion dragged him towards the lake and said, Look here, see my reflection and yours’. The sheep –lion was surprised to see both the reflection look alike. The lion brought a piece of meat and thrust it into the mouth of the sheep-lion. The sheep-lion hesitated for a moment, but soon found it tasty. It relished the meat and cried loudly. And lo! The bleating was gone and its roar reverberated through the forest. The sheep –lion understood that it was not a sheep but a lion.

Similarly, my dear children, you are lions but you think you are sheep. You are pure. Infinite and perfect. But you , have to feel it. There is infinite power within each of you  do not weep but say that y ou can achieve anything and you will achieve. So, stand up, be bold, be strong. Take the whole responsibility on your shoulders and know that you are the creator of your own destiny. All the strength and succour you want is within you therefore make your own future.

This is the first step to discovering the power of your mind.

They conquer Who believe They can

Self-confidence , the key to success is a trust of faith n your own self. That is being certain that what you are doing is perfectly correct. Here are few tips to help you increase your self-confidence.

Be up-to-date: always have a good amount of information on the topics of general and current interest . if at a gathering. The conversation turns to any of the current topics, you should be able to discuss it intelligently.

And even if you have no information on it, you can still participate passively by listening ot th3 conversation.

Believe in yourself. : Whenever you speak something , do it with self confidence. If you don’t believe that what you say is interesting. How will the audience find it interesting? Speak slowly and in a well modulated tone so that the listener can understand yo clearly. Always keep a good posture. A relaxed erect posture leads you to give clear and well thought out response in a discussion.

Look smart: make sure that you are well dressed first impression is the best impression and people evaluate you first from your appearance.

Make some auto suggestions; even when you are not confident or sure of yourself think that you are very confident. As for example. If you are to introduce a speaker for the first time in your life and you are feeling nervous of public speaking , believe that  you will do it in a perfect way . for example a child secures the 1^st rank in class and the other child gets 12’ rank . then the parents scold the child and tell him.” you are a useless boy, you don’t have brains that is why you cannot come first. When the child hears this over and over. Gradually he starts believing them. As a result he suffers from inferiority complex that may lead to self-defeat.

Implementing all these suggestion will be of great help . Apart from this, you can also give yourself an auto suggestion like “I have full self-confidence and I will introduce the speaker in the beast possible way.”

Think of your past success: Try and remember your achievements as frequently as you can. As for example, how you did well in your examinations or how you managed a very critical situation with great ease.

Do some Daydreaming. Create a mental picture of yourself as a very successful person. Gradually from your conscious mind it will seep into your subconscious mind and before you realise it, you will be totally a different person.

Be optimistic; Whenever a negative thought arises cancel it with a positive thought . as for example if you think you will not be able to give a speech properly; immediately cancel it with a positive thought by thinking that  you will be able to give the speech in the best possible way

Create your own style; don’t copy anybody. By copying a person you will get a feeling that the person whom you copy is superior and as a result you suffer from inferiority complex.

Find our the Origin; Get a competent counsellor to help you understand why you do what you do ; Learn the origin of your inferiority complex an self-doubt feelings and overcome these setbacks.

Emerson said; They conquer who believe they can and he added. “Do the thing you fear again and again. Practice of faith and confidence will soon kill your fears and insecurities and it will have no power on you”
