OVERCOMING FEAR OF DEATH

We build a bridge across the river of what we call death by the life we live here. Death does not mean an absolute break with this life and entrance into a wholly unaccustomed state. We may have all sorts of visionary dreams of a heaven and a hell , but the seers and sages tell us there is no gulf between this sphere and that which lies beyond . life here and life here after have an inseparable connection. One is the inevitable continuation of the other. Our present life well –lived gives us power over the life that is to come . Therefore wise man regard their life as a sacred gift-not something which has come by chance and which can be used for their own gratification. It doe not rise and set with this physical span of existence . They know that this body is nothing but a garment , which they change when its usefulness is over. It is wrong there fore to cling to it, for when this –one is worn out , the soul takes another which is better suited for its further  evolution. Death may bring a lull, a brief interruption; but those who are already alone in a spiritual sense, they go on ward and forward without delay. It is only those who are in slumber spiritually, even though they may appear to be physically  awake, who find the gulf a very wide one.

Hope and renewal

The New Year is the season of renewal and a time of commitment, a time to colour our own lives with shades of harmony and hope. If the Creator had one message for us, it would be: all this I have created for you, take pause and reflect; do not corrupt or make desolate your world — if you do, there is no one to set it right after you.

The message is simple, ‘We are all responsible’, not only for natural ecology but also for the intricate web of humanity. In the New Year, we could pray with a heart filled with infinite gratitude and ask: dear Creator, receive our prayers; and grant us both perception and knowledge of the things we ought to do, also the grace and energy to accomplish them.

Bless our centres of learning; may knowledge and sound learning flourish and abound in them, inspire all who teach and all who learn to seek wisdom to consolidate the web of humanity. Direct holders of religious mantles — swamis, sadhus, mullahs, priests, pastors, rabbis, dasturs, munis — help people to see those of other faiths not as different but the same in the gift of humanness.

Kindle in every heart true love of peace, and guide those who occupy places of power that free from limited perception, in quietness and equanimity, they may make decisions that fill the earth with justice, prosperity and harmony, service and sustainability. May all be peaceful and happy,/May all be free from ignorance,/May all be free from conflicts,/May all be filled with infinite compassion and composure.

Spirituality and its Practice

Shri Krishna urges us in the Gita to perform work without attachment, to attain freedom even in this life. It is not a myth nor a figment of a morbid brain. We have actually seen such lives with our own eyes  . we too have to attain this freedom. In this very life. We must attain it, even if we are to sacrifice everything for it. Otherwise well the tall talks of devotion (Bhakti) religion etc will ever remain confined to speech, without being realised in actual life. Unless we attain freedom. we cannot get pure devotion (Bhakti). In whatever station of life we may be, let us all say with all the force of our soul that we must become Jivanmuktas the “living –free”. But then we will have to sacrifice our whole life . Many like to hear of Bhakti, indeed it is very pleasant to listen to it, but it demands the very life-blood, as it were , when one goes to practise it. Once a man wanted to have Prema (intense love) for God. Just then he saw a vendor passing by the street with a basket on his head, crying “He here is Prema. Who wants it? Who would buy it? Hearing this , some boys cried out, “Oh, we, we will eat Prema”; some grown –up people also called out, “Oh, yes, we want Prema, we will buy it” At this , the vendor lowered the basket from his head and said “Come, let me know how much Prema each of you will have. I sell Prema by weight. How much do you want? A pound eh?” And with this he drew out a sharp knife and said “Look here ! cut your head off with this , and i shall give you Prema as much as your head weighs” if you want Pream you will have to give the price-your head! Verily, mercy-by empty words! Sacrifice, terrible sacrifice of one’s own life is the price for it . have you not heard of Shri Radha? She gave up everything that one could hold dear of life; and so she got Him . we have also seen such lives ourselves. The sublime lives of Sri RamKrishna, Swami Vivekanda. Nag Mahashaya, and others are ever shining brightly before our eyes. If you want spirituality follow such examples. To have wife, children, money business, and all others facilities of life, and at the same time religion, is an impossibility. You have to give up everything then alone can you have religion and spirituality.

The Inner Ocean

On this planet, we have deep, vast oceans with their cool refreshing waters, their tranquil scenery, and their hidden mysteries. People often go to the seashore to bathe in these waters or gaze upon their beauty.

There is another ocean, far greater than the physical waters of this earth. It is an ocean that is far more permanent than the seas; an ocean that offers not only refreshing waters to bathe the body, but also to nourish the soul. It is the ocean of spiritual consciousness, waiting to be tapped within each of us. It is waiting to be discovered by everyone who seeks it.

Spiritual consciousness is becoming conscious of the soul and divinity within. Most of us are aware of our body, of thoughts passing through our mind, and of the world around us. This is called body consciousness or physical consciousness. But we are more than our body and mind. We are actually a soul, a conscious entity that inhabits the body.

The soul is a part of the Divine and is the power that enlivens the body. This consciousness at the level of soul, independent of body and mind, is termed spiritual consciousness. We can attain spiritual consciousness by focusing our attention within, through a process called meditation.

Through meditation, we contact our true nature, our soul, and discover it is one with God, the Source of divine love. Then we will find all the treasures of divinity available to us.

Just as the ocean has been there for people of all ages, so is the spiritual ocean of love lying in wait for us within. Meditation is the first step.

I drive joy There was a doctor in Benaras who spent 7 minutes in the morning and evening for mediation on God. Knowing this, his colleagues and friends laughed at him. One day they argued that he was wasting ten precious minutes on something, which he had been misled into believing. The doctor replied, “Well, if God does not exist, I agree that I am wasting ten minutes a day. But, if He exists? I am afraid you are wasting your entire lifetime. I prefer to waste ten minutes rather than a lifetime. Why should you grudge me the 10 minutes joy that I derive 4m.

Every Day is a Celebration

Some of what happens to us each day is God’s will. We also have free will to choose, and we can make choices that are going to be beneficial to us and those around us. Our journey in life is a process of evolution of the soul.

Sooner or later, the soul is destined to return to God. The end goal that God has for us is that we attain this freedom. At the right moment, we get a helping hand when we think all is lost.

Ernest Shackleton dreamed of crossing Antarctica by dog sled, a 2,100-mile journey. Shackleton and his team began the journey. Unfortunately, the boat taking them to Antarctica hit an ice pack and sank. Luckily, the men survived, but they found themselves in waters with drifting ice floes.

The nearest land was 200 miles away. The nearest human outpost was 1,200 miles away. They salvaged a one-ton lifeboat that they pulled with them, crossing from one ice floe to another. When they reached an area that did not have any more ice floes, they got into the lifeboat, but the waves were often 90-feet high.

Somehow, they made it to an island of ice, which had never been crossed before. It took them seven months to reach civilisation.

When they finally arrived, they told their friends that they felt the presence of an unseen power guiding them on.

The beauty of God’s unseen hand is that sometimes we actively pray for help and receive it, but there are many times when we do not even ask for help, and help comes anyway. These times are reminders to us that we are not alone.

When Draupadi was being disrobed in public, Krishna was not present. He was not even aware of Draupadi’s predicament.

So how was she saved? Krishna faced a crisis in Dwarka. Salva, a king who held a grudge against him, had ransacked Dwarka, killing and burning everything. So he was not aware of the happenings in Dwarka.

How then was Draupadi miraculously rescued? For Grace to function, I need not be mentally aware of what is happening to you. A certain investment of energies is made; it takes care. If one wishes to be aware, it’s possible.

But most of the time one does not wish to be aware because too many things are happening. These energies will lubricate the passage of life for you. And if you are open to it, it happens even unasked.

For the unreceptive, it will not work, even if you are wealthy and powerful. If you are not open to Grace, everything will come to naught. You are like a machine. Without lubrication, you are stuck.

I think it is Udhava who asks Krishna, “In many situations I have seen you and doubtless you are a divine manifestation.

You are definitely no ordinary man. But why is it that you can’t handle these problems just like that (snaps his fingers) for people? When somebody is struggling, why can’t you just do that?” Krishna said, “Nobody can work a miracle unless the recipient is in full faith. So don’t expect such things when people are not receptive”.
