Imaginary Monsters
Superstition and fear have made
people dream up all kinds of strange and imaginary monsters. Some of these
unnatural creatures were invented from stories of unusual animals brought back
by travelers. Other mystical monsters are based on actual living, and extinct
animals. Some imaginary monsters might be real, we just do not know for sure.
Every year, thousands of people watch
the water on Loch Ness in Scotland, hoping to see the Loch Ness Monster. Some believe that the
monster could be a surviving Plesiosaur a prehistoric sea creature.
The hydra is a nine-headed beast of
Greek mythology, it was very difficult to kill as each time a head was cut off,
it grew two new one.
Sailors’ sightings of mermaids may
have been dugongs. At a distance, female dugongs with their young look like
women holding their babies in their arms.
The myth of basilisk as a vicious ,
venomous creature is much more fearsome than the harmless real-life lizard.
In the Himalaya , giant human-like footprints have
been found. They are thought to belong to the Abominable Snowman or Yeti.
Dragon are among the oldest mythical
monsters. Dragon-like reptiles roaming the Earth include the Komodo dragon and
the Iguana.
The narwhal’s long twisting horn has
been mistaken for that of the mythical unicorn.
Life is fruitful I the ratio in which
it is laid out in noble action or patient perseverance.
Quote from the True
Charm and Power of Vedanta
Now
you have heard about other kinds of mediation or read about them and
thought about them. One of the very common ways-and I do not mean common in the
sense that it is of no use-is mediation on one of the forms of God. There are
devout Christian who like to mediate on Christ and Buddhists who mediate on
Buddha among the Hindus there are many who mediate on other forms of the Deity
. Hindus delight in having founded many divine forms for the purpose of mediation
You may say, “ Oh , all these gods! We
don’t like that. “But whether you like it or not, you must admit that since men
are so various, it will be delight to them to have a choice of various ways of
mediation. If you don’t like one form of God , you can take another and mediate
on that . Some of these forms may express to you great states of being. Christ
is a state o being, Buddha is a state of being, many Hindu deities also are
states of being. You pick one. The teacher will describe that form and the way
you should think of that deity. Then as
you dwell on that from, your mind gradually becomes immersed init.
Long ago I read the Vishnu Purana ,
one of our old Sanskrit books . in it there is a description of a meditation, a
long description., I wont go into the details, but it is one of the ways of
mediation which are mixed with devotion or love: you mediate on Krishna, because he is the embodiedment of
Love. You mediate on him ,and his form becomes real and brings to you not only
the consciousness of the One being of which the whole world is an expression,
but also a sense of beauty , a sense of love, and you feel the whole universe
is really an expression of this Love, this inner Being. That is a wonderful
meditation. If you practice it you will derive a great deal of spiritual
benefit from it. That is the path of devotion in which most people of the world
are interested and which most people want to follow.
In one of the books of our philosophy , it is said, “Do
noit think that you are separatd form anything. Whatever you think you are
separated from will circumscribe you and bind
you . Think that you are one with all, and you will feel free. Courtesy When the Many become One
There are three kinds of devotees: superior, mediocre,
and inferior, The inferior devotee says, God I out there’ Acoording to him God
is different from His creation. The medicore devotee says; God is the
Anarayami, the inner Guide. God dwells in everyone’s heart. The mediocre
devotee sees God in the heart . But the superior devotee sees that God alone
has become evrything. He alone has become the twenthy-four cosmic principles. He
finds that everything . aboe and below is filled with God.
“Read the Gita, the Bhagavata, and the Vedatna , and y ou
will understand all this . Is not God in His creation.?”
But, if He exists?
I drive joy There was a doctor in Benaras who spent 7
minutes in the morning and evening for mediation on God. Knowing this, his
colleagues and friends laughed at him. One day they argued that he was wasting
ten precious minutes on something, which he had been misled into believing. The
doctor replied, “Well, if God does not exist, I agree that I am wasting ten
minutes a day. But, if He exists? I am afraid you are wasting your entire
lifetime. I prefer to waste ten minutes rather than a lifetime. Why should you
grudge me the 10 minutes joy that I derive 4m.
