Envy In social Life
We have been warned against Envy as
one of the seven deadly sins. Envy is , indeed, the bane of social life.
Moliere has even made this mournful prophecy: “Envious people will die; but
Envy will never die”. Where do we find this Envy in us? Envy has its root in
abnormal egotism. Try to crush and suppress it by all means in your power. If
you see someone who is more beautiful than you are, begin to enjoy and
appreciate that beauty, instead of thinking of your own inferiority. Similarly,
if you meet someone who is more intelligent or erudite than you are, either you
try to improve yourself or appreciate the others person’s intelligence. Don’t
be sad and downcast because it is not yours personally. it is yours through the
fundamental unity of Humanity . Nature does not concentrate all gifts in one
individual but she bestows a few of them on each, and thus all of them on al
together. Thus everyone is compensated. Envy which is born of Egotism and
Inequality is an entirely negative and unprofitable feeling.
Every is a vice that yields no
return. You gain nothing from envy: and you lose peace of mind and happiness by
your own meanness and selfishness. You may try to decry and belittle others, or
point out their shortcomings, or take delight in stander and scandal. Envy
engenders such baseness and uncharitableness. Envious person doesn’t understand
that he cannot injure another eminent person by malicious and unjust criticism.
He is even despised by those to whom he speaks. in fact, he produces a reaction
of sympathy in favors of the person whom he criticizes . envy turns even great
men into pygmies. We can quote a small incident in Plato’s life . Once Diogenes
the Cynic was really caught by envy when he pretended to show moral indignation
against Plato. On one occasion. Plato had invited some friends to a banquet,
and Diogenes trampled on his carpets and said. “Thus I trample on the pride of
Plato” Plato said,” yes, Diogenes, with pride of another sort” Saint Kabir has
truly said. “It is easy to sacrifice money , but is very difficult to abandon
envy and jealousy. Envy destroys and disorganizes progressiveness and organizations. The lesser –minded people
, envious of the fame of the successful leaders, try t filch their good name
from them . they foment discontent and disputes and sometimes even break up the
organization for their selfish ends. Thus every can mar and destroy everything
that is beneficial to mankind . as Spencer put it, envy is ravenous wolf’ that
hungrily devours one’s sense of appreciation.

Quote from the True Charm and Power
of Vedanta
As a matter of ideas or concepts only
, the philosophic discipline is a discipline of the reason, it is a way of
thinking rationally . you have aptitude , let us say , and then you are taught
by the study of logic and other disciplines how to think philosophically. But
there is another discipline by which the mind is capable of the spontaneous
grasp of reality at its freshest, at its very origin. That discipline, I have
found , calls for self-abnegation. By self –abnegate I man relinquishment, of
what you know to be only superficial and therefore untrue, of what you know to
be a veil covering the face of truth. You not only have to reject this in your
thought, you have to reject it in your behavior, for in our present state
thought is only a pale reflection of behavior. I do not , for example see how a
seeker of truth- a true student of philosophy –can be all involve with this
world going here and going there , enjoying the so-called good things of life,
and at the same time reflect in his own mind reality as it is. I do not see how
he can grasp reality as it is . I do not see how he can grasp reality fully and understand what it is . I
just cannot see it. You may say. “ If a philosophy student behaved as you
require. He would be antisocial; what kind of life is this for a student of
philosophy ; My friends , even if you want to gain a little something of this
world you will find you cannot distract yourself , you have to give your full
attention to it . and there you are trying to capture the heart of reality and
you do not think it calls for your full attention! I say it does call for your full attention, your fill mind and your
full heart have to be given to it. Courtesy A view of Vedanta
But, if He exists?
I drive joy There was a doctor in Benaras who spent 7
minutes in the morning and evening for mediation on God. Knowing this, his
colleagues and friends laughed at him. One day they argued that he was wasting
ten precious minutes on something, which he had been misled into believing. The
doctor replied, “Well, if God does not exist, I agree that I am wasting ten
minutes a day. But, if He exists? I am afraid you are wasting your entire
lifetime. I prefer to waste ten minutes rather than a lifetime. Why should you
grudge me the 10 minutes joy that I derive 4m.
