Success Through Mastery of Words

Success Through Mastery of Words
How can you become a master of language, able to express your thoughts concisely, clearly and with a power to impress others? The points that follow will help you get started on the right lines.
Sometimes people stand silent without any expression because they had not knowledge of the situation under discussion. For instance, if you happen to be totally ignorant of boats and selling, you will not be able to say anything substance if someone asks you what all the varous types of boats . in such circumstance, no amount of skill with words will help you.
The fact remains that to say anything worthwhile about some particular topic you need to know something about it. Therefore, the starting point for mastery of language and the skills of communication is knowledge . Knowledge comes with study and experience. Study brings book knowledge, while experience brings knowledge of the job you do.
Effective use of language involves both speaking and writing . to improve in both speaking and writing you must follow good models and practise regularly. Let us look at the spoken word first.
Choosing good models for your spoken words is the easiest part of the task. Probably you know one or two people whose way of saying things you admire. Apart from your personal acquaintances, some of the people who appear regularly on television may strike you as having this skill.
Set out to copy the style and manner of your chosen model. Note the kind of words they use, the shortness or length of their sentences or length of their sentences or length of their expressions.
Notice how they describe a thing logically pointing out its general details and then drawing attention to finder details. Try to imitate their ability to set out the various points one by one logically and orderly.
In studying your models, note the unusual words they use. You must build up a good vocabulary and develop the confidence to introduce into your own speech the new words you learn. Keep a good dictionary at hand and use it frequently.
Some mistakes, however are important, especially n the field of syntax as they can lead to misunderstanding.
For instance; do not confuse the words both and each. This is a common mistake For example, Jim and Jack were both riding bicycle’ can only mean a bicycle with two riders. Probably the speaker meant, ‘Jim and jack was each riding a bicycle.’
You may be gong for a job interview and you now that ‘Yes’ and No answers will not impress the interviewers. Rehearse for the occasion by imagining the interview. Ask yourself the kind of questions likely to come up. Let your imagination tell you the exact words you will use . Hear yourself giving the right answers.
Written expression seems to present special difficulties to many people including some who are effective in speech.
Writing does involve attention to some points that do not arise in speech. Punctuation is one, for a misplaced comma can alter the sense of your words. A frequent error is to use a comma where a full stop is demanded.
You can easily learn the elements of correct punctuation and an hour or two spent with a suitable book will do the trick.
In writing we need to be consistently on the alert for the reader may apply a quite different meaning to your words from the one we intended That is why it is usually necessary to the written word more complete, more specific to try to get the full meaning into the words themselves instead of relying on the way we say them.
Keep your written communications short and simple. Avoid the common fault of introducing long, out or the ordinary words and phrases that people do not use in speech. Use the familiar, conversational phrase of word.
Spend as much time revising your work as you spend in first drafting it. What you first write can always be made shorter, clearer and more elegant. Cut out lengthy introductory paragraphs and avoid long, explanatory summing up at the end. (courtesy ; “Phycologist Magazine)
Good sees the Heart
Once an untouchable sought entrance into a temple . the priest, however, refused it. In answer to the poor man’s requests, the holy man replied. “You are impure by birth first undergo penance for two years, and then come into my presence, then I shall consider your request. “The untouchable returned home sad, to do the holy man’s command.
As chance would have it, this very priest saw the untouchable some three years later passing by his temple quite unconcerned. The priest stopped him and inquired; “Hello, how is it that you di not come to my temple? Have you not yet performed the penance ? it is over two years now. ‘The poor devotee replied. “Yes , I carried out your orders and I thank you for your instructions. For , in fact the Lord blessed me with His vision, and warned me against entering your temple, for He said. He had not Himself visited it for ages.”
The vanity of the priest was crushed, his pride was humbled .God sees the heart, to Him appearances are immaterial.
Quote from The true charm and power of Vedanta
Purity has been the foundation of all truly great characters. If you build a house on the sand, it is sure to tumble down; similarly, if we build one characters on anything but purity, they will not stand, impurity is a mixture; purity is one without a second. Mixed thoughts are seeing many; pure thought is when you see only One. When you think of nay one’s evil side, , you yourself fake that evil; just as when yo unmeditated on a saint, you gain saintliness. What you think you become. when we realize how mush we lose by dwelling on the plane of evil, we grow watchful and hold the mind only on the plane of good and see in everything the . All-pervading God. If we wish to save ourselves , we shall have to struggle hard, we shall have to regain inch by inch what we have lost by dwelling on the evil in the world.
But, if He exists?
I drive joy There was a doctor in Benaras who spent 7 minutes in themorning and evening for mediation on God. Knowing this, his colleagues and friends laughed at him. One day they argued that he was wasting ten precious minutes on something, which he had been misled into believing. The doctor replied, “Well, if God does not exist, I agree that I am wasting ten minutes a day. But, if He exists? I am afraid you are wasting your entire lifetime. I prefer to waste ten minutes rather than a lifetime. Why should you grudge me the 10 minutes joy that I derive 4m.

Quote from The true charm and power of Vedanta
Do not have evil-doers for friends, do not have low people for friends; have virtuous people for friends, have for friends, have for friends the best of men.
Few are there among men who arrive at the other shore; the other people here run up and down the shore. But those who, when the law has been well preached to them, follow the law, will pass over the dominion of death, however difficult to cross.
There is no suffering for him who has finished his journey , and abandoned grief, who has freed himself on all sides, and thrown of all fetters.
The gods even envy him whose senses, like horses well broken in by the driver, have been subdued, who is free from pride, and free from appetites; his thought is quiet; quiet are his word and deed, when he has obtained freedom by true knowledge , when he has thus be come a quiet man.
If a man holds himself dear, let him watch himself, carefully, during one at least out of the three watches a wise man should be watchful.
Let each man direct himself first to what is proper, then let him teach other; thus a wise man will not suffer; If a man makes himself as he teaches others to be , then, being himself well subdued, he may subdue others; for one’s own self is difficult to subdue;
He who gives himself to vanity, and does not give himself to mediation, for getting the real aim of life and grasping at pleasure, will in time envy him who has exerted himself in meditation.

Racism
The following scene took place on a BA flight between Johannesburg and London.
A white woman, about 50 years old, was seated next to a black man. Obviously disturbed by this, she called the airhostess.
“Madam ,what is the matter?” the hostess asked.
“You obviously do not see it then/’ she responded, “You placed me next to a black man. I do not agree to sit next to some one from such a repugnant group. Give me an alternative seat.”
“Be calm, please”, the hostess replied. “Almost all the places on this flight are taken. I will go to see it another place is available. The hostess went away and then came back a few minutes latter. “Madam, just as I thought, there are no other available seats in the economy class. I spoke to the captain and he informed me that there is also no seat in the business class. All the same , we still have one place in the first class. “
Before the woman could say anything, the hostess continued . “It is not usual fo our company to permit someone from the economy class to sit in the first class . However , given the circumstance, the captain feels that it would be scandalous to make someone sit next to someone so disgusting”.
She turned to the back guy, and sais, “Therefore, Sir, if yo would like to , please take your hand luggage because a seat awaits you in the first class”.
At the moment, the other passengers who were stunned by what they had just witnessed stood up and applauded.
Take a lesson from the sun who shines his light on everyone.

Do not give way, hold tight, It is when everything seems lost that all is saved.
It is strange bridge-from your stupid ego to the Infinite Reality. Each time you take two steps, the bridge behind you is burnt.
We give our strings to the world to pull and make us dance as it wishes!
Quote from The true charm and power of Vedanta
Although the company of holy men may do much to purify us and change our nature, however, character is after all what we from ourselves by our own habits of thought and by our own deeds. We alone are responsible for our characters. If we are now bad, we can change and become good. It all depends upon ourselves. But as long as we remain on the dual place , on the place of good and bad, there is danger of falling back. We must, therefore, go beyond both and reach a state where our characters become perfect. Then neither good nor bad can any longer have an effect upon them; they remain untouched by either. This is the only thing that is permanent in this transitory world and until we have reached this state were not free from danger. Thus a man who lies in solitude and ties to from his character may appear to be perfect a s long as he does not come into evil association, but he cannot be judged until he is seen in the midst of evil. That is the test. A perfect character is one who can go through good and bad unmoved. As it has been beautifully expressed by Emerson; “It is easy in the world to live after with world’s opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own; but the great man is he who , in the midst of the crowd, keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.” This is the exact definition of a perfect man, who is always the same under all circumstances.

Power to Achieve Outstanding Success
The power capacity, the developed skill to achieve outstanding success must come from with the people themselves. If you want to change your wished into facts, dreams into realities, desires into solid achievement, the all important answer is Personal courage.
Personal courage means the development of inner strength, conscious will power, overwhelming desire and the determination to reach your goal.
If you want to achieve lasting success, the self courage will drive you towards that goal must come from within. It must be personal, deep rooted and a part of your innermost thoughts.
Scientific research confirms the fact that an average adult uses only a small portion of his mental capacity . Consequently major portion of an average person’s brain power remains, idle and unproductive . Since all growth and progress come from within there is practically no limit to what a personally enthused person can accomplish.
Here are five vital points for personal courage to guide you.
Crystallise your thinking.
Determine what specific goals you want to achieve. Then, write them down,. Wiring crystalliser thought and thought inspires action.
When you set definite goals. You are forming your own personal plan of action that will put theory into practise, knowledge into know-how ,and thought into action. A plan of actin, when you personalise it, enables you to recognise the limitless power of your own talents, ablates, and capacity to change.
Develop a plan for achieving your goal and a deadline for its attainment.
The plan must necessarily list the obstacles between where you are now and where you want to go, and how you intend to get over them.
Develop a sincere desire; A burning desire is the greatest inspiration of every human action. When you visualise exactly what you want in each area of your life, desire will add strength to your purpose , it will improve your self-image.
Develop Supreme confidence in yourself.
Confidence comes form experience. Experience comes from know how. Know-how comes from having the courage to submit yourself to obstacles, situations, and circumstances.
Confidence stimulates your creative imagination. No matter what you undertake, you will never do it until you think you can. It must be mentally accomplished before it can be materially accomplished.
Every time you say to yourself. “ I can do it and I will do it”, you are strengthening your determination. You are forming a habit of thinking which will manifest itself in action.
Develop determination;
Determination is persistency. When you make up your mind to follow you plan of personal courage, do it.
There is an irresistible Law of Force that governs every human action. It is called the Law of Attraction, and it operates with mathematical certainly. We attract what we think . Every negative thought has a negative result. On the other hand, positive thoughts are the basis for success attitudes.
With positive expectancy, you will look to your strength instead of your weakness, your power instead of you problems
These are just a few of the many benefits you will receive with a pan of action based on personal courage..
Quote from The true charm and power of Vedanta
Without right discrimination we cannot make any progress whatsoever in the spiritual life. Things of the world, fascinating to the sense and appearing to be real, often lead us astray when we lack the power of decimation. Hard indeed is the path of Samsara (earthly life). Even the keenest human minds are sometimes deceived by the charm of Maya.. Ignorance is the cause of all our misery and suffering, and ignorance exists because of non-discrimination. When we take the unreal for the real and cling to it, we meet with disappointment and thus suffer.

Who Heals The Creatures of Nature?
It si generally believed that Nature is ruthless. If nay wild creature is sick or injured it is always left to die or is actually killed by its companions rather than become a liability to them. This is not strictly true. Many creatures act as their own doctors in an attempt to cure themselves
It is known that a cat or dog will eat grass if its stomach is upset, but other animals also eat various leaves and greases for their medicinal value. They always pick special plants and avoid all others. This seems to suggest that animals have acquired a knowledge of the value of herbal treatment. An instance for this was observes some years ago. A man who caught a gibbon noticed that it had a swelling on its side which ran a long scar. Curious to see what was wrong the man had the animal operated upon. The swelling proved to be a large ball of masticated leaves from a plant known for it medicinal value. The ape had obviously been wounded and had gathered the leaves. Chewed them into a ball and stuffed them into its open wounds. A moorhen was once found with its leg bound with a kind of plaster cast at the knee join. The bone had been broken but had grown together again and was fully healed, but the cast of dried clay must have been put there by the bird. Itself. Woodcock birds are also seen dong the same thing, applying a splint of stiff grasses and clay to an injured limb.
First-aid of another kind is seen in the ant world, where a worker with a broken leg will have it amputated by its fellows. Ants also isolated and tend sick members of their communities in special chambers in the nest.
Black bears and other creatures coming out of hibernation in the spring are known to search for the eat certain berries and fruits which have a laxative effect. This is mainly to tone up their body systems after along sleep
Deer prefer lime –filled water when growing new ant tiers so that these will grow quickly, while pregnant deer will earth only certain kinds of food until their young are born. Likewise many other creatures will search for certain leaves and roots when they are sick.
Animals with bleeding wounds have been known to place spider s webs on them. These have styptic properties which constrict the blood vessels and reduce bleeding.
And the tiny and unpleasant maggots which crawl in their hundreds inside the naked wound of some animals are never disturbed by the creature itself. Laid by mayflies , these maggot actually destroy dangerous bacteria in the wound and assist natural healing.
But not only ape there animals who act as their own doctors on occasion, some also perform as dentists. apes sometimes act as skilled dentist of there own and each other’s teeth, it had been observed by a naturalist once that an Orang-=outang performed such a feat of self treatment when it had a gumboil in its mouth. It took damp clay and applied it as a poultice on its face, a fe2w days later pulled out a rotten tooth. In fact, American scientist have observed that Chimpanzees practise more skilled dentistry –inspecting. Cleaning, and even extracting teeth. Such scabietic research, involving groups of animal in a seasonable wild state will live us a greater insight into fascinating and valuable aspect of animal behaviour. .
Be not afraid of greatness, some are born great, some achieve greatness and some have greatness thrust upon them.
Codes and Ciphers
Codes and ciphers are set of characters of signals , with prearrange meanings as letters or numbers, used for secrecy and brevity in transmitting messages, especially in wartime.
Quote from The true charm and power of Vedanta
“Having well ascertained the object of the knowledge of the Vedanta, having purified their nature by the Yoga of renunciation, all anchorites, enjoying the highest immortality , become free at the time of the great end [death] in the worlds of Brahma” – Mundaka Upanishad
“The first results of Yoga they call lightness, healthiness, steadiness, a good complexion, an easy pronunciation, a sweet odor, and slight execration. “
“As a metal disk [mirror] tarnished by dust shines bright again after it has been cleaned, so is the one incarnate person satisfied and free from grief after he has been the real nature of the Self.”
“and when, by means of the real nature of his Self, he sees, as by a lamp, the real nature of Brahman, then , having known the Unborn, Eternal God, who is beyond all natures, he is freed from all fetters.”
“let us know that highest great Lord of Lords, the highest Deity of deities, the master of masters, the highest above as God, the Lord of the World, the Adorable.” Svetasvatara –Upanishad.

All of us have inborn desire to becomes widely popular. Desire for success is the motivating factor behind all our activities. To become a super performer, it is not enough, if you have a spark of inspiration at a particular moment. One must have it and make serous attempts to retain it.
Faith in oneself is what is needed to sustain motivation. Faith in yourself slowly leads you to think of rational goals that may inspire you to take up a challenging task ahead with a clear vision of your goal.
For instance if you have a vision to become a top scorer in a particular examination, do the needful and stay focused on the work involved.
Keep acquiring knowledge and make learning a continuous process. Read good books articles, listen to the lectures of intellectuals in the relative fields. Son you would experience the thrill of success.
You must remember, new learning brings you new insights, which are crucial for your progress. Above all, you must seek support you need from other sources. You must be able to identify the resources you need to complete the task.
Do your work promptly because postponing work leads to delay and perhaps , you may not do it later. Remember that sometimes there may be moments of indecision, inaction but don’t fall prey to gloom, but “Arise awake and stop not till the goal is reached.”
Who radiates warmth and Concern
Tere are two type of people in the world. Who says “here I am !“ and those who say. “Ah, there you are!”
How different are these two approaches!”
One says “Look at me! I need attention. You cannot ignore me . the other says, “Tell me about yourself I am interested to know one says. “I am important and the world revolves around me”
The other says, “You are important . What can I do for you?”
How nice it would be to be known as the second kind of person!”
Someone, others love to have around
Someone who radiates warmth and concern
Someone who is dependable and willing to help.
Quote from The true charm and power of Vedanta
What is meditation? Mediation is a constant remembrance of the object we mediate upon. It is described as like an unbroken stream of oil poured from one vessel to another. “ when we attain to this kind of remembrance in relation to the Supreme Being, then all the bonds of the heart break and it becomes illumined by the presence of the Self. Through mediation we feel the nearness of Divinity. There is no other way to reach Him. No external power can give us the vision of God. Because He is the nearest of all friends, nearest of anything that we can perceive. “He is grater than the greatest, smaller than the smallest , and He dwells n the core of every heart.” As long as we try to see Him outside of us, we never find Him, all our struggles are in vain. But when by experience we find it impossible to see Him outside of us, then we turn our thoughts. Within and become mediative.
In each of us there are two tendencies –the centrifugal and the centripetal. The one drives us toward external objects, the other draws us inward. The one scatters out energies and weakens us , the other helps us to centralize them and makes us strong. When through the power of concentration we are able to subdue all our various disturbing thoughts and desire , then we get the vision of the Supreme Self seated on the altar of our hearts .Then alone all crookedness will be straightened out and all doubt about the Self will vanish forever. We shall be supremely blissful, knowing that we and the Father are one.
