What Is Satire?
When certain aspects in society such as the way people live and act, their attitudes and ideas, are criticized in a literary form that is satire. It may be a poem, a book, a play, a film or a joke.
Aesop, who wrote famous ancient fables, and James Thurber, who wrote ‘Fables for our Time’ both gave human stupidities and vices to birds and forces and other animals. This kind of with that ridicules man’s vices and follies is called .Satires are usually more cynical, or distrustful of human behavior than other writers.
Perhaps the two greatest satires in literature are Voltaire’s Candide and Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels. The first makes fun of the idea that. All is for the best in this best of all possible worlds”. The second attacks man’s vices in general. The satire is hidden beneath Gulliver’s adventures and humorous incidents.
Another classic satire is Miguel de Cervantes’ Don Quixote. Don Quixote is an idealistic knight. He and Sancho Panza his squire, try to correct the injustice of the world. But they ‘tilt against windmills”, that is they fight senseless battles. Many dramatists, especially of the 17th century, wrote plays that were satires. One of the greatest of these was Molere.
The force is all-conquering, but its victories are short-lived.
Kind Fathers, Loving Mothers
Homes should be filled with kind and generous fathers, with true and loving mothers; and when they are thus filled, the world will be civilized; intelligence will rock the cradle; justice will sit in the courts; wisdom will reign in the legislative halls; and, above all and over all, like the dome of heaven will hover the sweet spirit of liberty.
Don’t Quarrel With Your Mind
It has been observed by thoughtful people that mankind is mankind. It is mind that places man above others creatures. No mind, no man. You mind is your best friend and your worst enemy. Control its fluctuations but do not quarrel with it. For, it has a tremendous amount of psychic energy. Neither suppresses it nor flatter it. Just be a witness to its doings.
Give A Smile
Give a smile to someone passing thereby making his morning glad; it may greet you in the evening when your own heart may be sad.
Speak the truth. Practices virtue. Study the holy books. Honour the parents, teachers and the guests.
Beautiful idol
A sculptor and his friend were having an evening walk. A piece of granite stone was lying on the side of the road and the sculptor intently looked at it. his friends wondered what he was so keenly looking for, and questioned him. He said that he could see a beautiful idol of his chosen deity in the piece of granite. His friends, could not understand how a rough piece of stone could contain a form of his chosen deity. The sculptor then started chiseling the stone. His steady, systematic and dedicated effort resulted in the stone being converted into an impressive statues of the Lord, and all this without any other input from outside. In other words, removing the unwanted particles brought out what was lying hidden in the piece of stone.
Similarly, by removing the dirt the negative tendencies in us we become embodiments of all the virtues put together. –(Courtesy ; “The Vision”)
He is the happiest person who values the merits of others and derives joy in their achievements.
STREAM OF LOVE
Once this heart of mine was barren like you desert;
Lacking in grace and lacking in life;
Till the stream of love made it fertile,
It was full of waste and unlovely land.
The stream of love hath transformed my barren grounds.
To a flower garden and a fruit orchard.
Friend of my heart,
Let the stream of love flow in thy soul, unbarred.
Hinder it not through fear,
Nor let petty thoughts block its course.
Friend of my heart,
Let the stream of love flow on.
It will wash and clean;
It will revive and redeem.
Let the stream flow on and on.
It will bring life and loveliness;
It will bring calm and happiness.
Let the stream of love flow on and on,
Unhindered and unblocked by fear or inner storm.
I drive joy
There was a doctor in Benaras who spent 5 minutes in the morning and evening for mediation on God. Knowing this, his colleagues and friends laughed at him. One day they argued that he was wasting ten precious minutes on something, which he had been misled into believing. The doctor replied, “Well, if God does not exist, I agree that I am wasting ten minutes a day. But, if He exists? I am afraid you are wasting your entire lifetime. I prefer to waste ten minutes rather than a lifetime. Why should you grudge me the 10 minutes joy that I derive from? I am not robbing you of your joy; why should you rob me of mine. He asked. The critics were silenced. –Baba- Chinna Katha
