Drawings –First Expression of Artist’s Vision

Drawing is making a picture with pen, pencil or charcoal, Together with painting and sculpture, drawing is one of the branches of fine arts.

An artist often makes a drawing in preparation for a large painting or sculpture but some famous artist make drawings that stand by themselves. Several techniques are use in drawing. Some artists faithfully copy what they see; others sketch only outlines. Some others give an exaggerated version of subject which shows what the artist thinks.

Often, rough sketches are sufficient- For example the comic strip or political cartoon is seldom a finished work. These are admired because their creators can tell a complete story with only a few lines of their sketches.

Commercial artists frequently use drawing techniques to make posters, newspapers or magazine advertisements or similar materials. A specialized skill is medical or scientific illustration which involves drawings difficult subjects.

Other types of drawings have specialized purpose which are not strictly artistic. For example, Mechanical drawing or drafting shows exact sizes and shapes of tools and machines with their inside parts that would not be ordinary seen. In such pictures the designer’s ideas are clear to the craftsman who will build the devices.

Architectural drafting use similar principles in the building construction industry. Both mechanical and architectural drawings are sometimes called blue prints because the machine that copies them uses blue ink.

Historically, the art of drawing can be traced back to the earliest records of man. Some Cave art is in the for of drawings.

Ancient Chinese used ink and brushes for their famous line drawings on scrolls and decorations. They and the Japanese still draw in this way today. Several artist of the 16^th century used pencil chalk ink and charcoal to sketch or draw their ideas before beginning a large painting or sculpture Famous artists like Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo, left a treasure trove of drawings that show how they planned their major works.

Search for truth

That there could be a difference between a man who considers himself to be  a rationalist with a scientific bent of mind, and a seeker of truth was brought home to me by a recent incident. A friend of mine who was widely read in matters relating to science always insisted that belief in God and religion is the product of a sense of fear and uncertainty in the mind. I was convinced that he had absorbed the views of some eminent Westerner thinks. Fortunately, he did not say that exploitation is at the root of all religions. It may be admitted that in some primitive’s tribes, belief in God or religion originated from a sense of fear. But this is not the whole truth. In cultured, civilized communities, the religious feelings are not an expression of any fear. A man standing before a forked road may reflect a while as to which direction he should take . it is more sensible to say that the religious sense is the outcome of an

attempt to find answers to certain fundamental questions about life and the world. What was Gautama Buddha afraid of? What caused any fear in the mind of Shankaracharya? Should we consider the composers of the Upanishad to be the seekers of truth or escapists? In India, philosophy and religion grew from the insights into the nature of reality. The Gita rose to resolve the conflict in the mind of Arjuna. The Sankhyas, who make a valuable contribution to Indian philosophy, laid the foundation of inquiry, into the means of overcoming evils of life and existence. The origin of religion is an attempt to seek a way out of the limitations of the world; to attain the state of mind required for such relief . it is keen desire for the

exploration of the world within. My friend considered the behavior of such eminent thinkers to be nothing but a from of psychological obsession. I asked him in which century this psychological theory was developed. Don’t we see that the more recent scientific discoveries only disprove the previous discoveries which also scientific? New Year Days In India

Among Indian festivals New Year days are perhaps the most important Most people celebrate it with the hope that anything that starts well will end well

The Gregorian calendar was introduced by the British during their rule. It was practically the only calendar in use for official purposes. January first is of course, the New Year day of the Gregorian Colander.

In parts of international importance like Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Kochi etc, the sterns of ships sound the arrival of the New-year exactly at midnight. Organizations that follow the British traditions have New Year eve dinner and dances to bring in the New Year joyfully.

Jamshed Navroz A sections of the Parsis follows the Fasli Calendar and their New Year starts with the vernal equinox, the time when what Sun crosses te equator. The day which came to the known as Jamshed Navroj was celebrated in ancient Persia (now Iran) with a good deal of feasting and drinking. The Mughals used to celebrate Jamshed Navroz in India it was customary for the Mughal emperor to be weighed on the occasion in gold and silver which were distributed among the poor people

Saka New Year: The major apart of South India and the Maratha Country generally followed the Saka era. In 1957 the Government of India adopted this era as the National Calendar with some modifications. The Saka year now starts with the first day of the month of Chaitra corresponding to the 22^nd of March in ordinary years and the 21^st March in a Leap Year (every fought year consisting of 366 days, adding one day in February)

The Saka era is younger than the Chritain era. The 22^nd of Mrch 1977 corresponding to the 1^st of Chairtra 1899 Saka. The origin of this era is traced to the regional (beginning with accession to the throne) years of King Salivahan.

Gudhi Padwa: In the Maratha Country the New year is also sometimes celebrated as Gudhi Padawa (banner First) The main item of the celebration is the raising of a banner of silk and gold on a long and paying homage to it a survival perhaps of an ancient flag-hoisting ceremony.

Ugadi and Panchaga Sharavana: In Andhara Pradehsn the New Year is called Ugadi meaning the beginning of the yuga (an age) It is generally celebrated with a feast.

Vikram era: The vikram era is followed in Gujarat and some parts fo North India. It starts with the regional year of King Vikramaditya Kartik (October –November) and the Diwali celebration coincide with it. The new part other celebration is the changing of the account books , giving a new look to houses and business premises and generally starting a new life for the coming years

Vishu or the Kollam New Year: The Kollam era is followed mainly in Kerala. The era is said to have started from the day Parasuraam reclaimed Kerala front the sea. The months of the Kollam year are purely solar (influenced by the Sun) They are called by the twelve signs of the Zodiac (an imaginary belt in the heavens) Chingorm is the first moth of the year.  

The most important part of the Vishu or the Kollam new Year is the Kani or preparation for the auspicious oman during the night. So on getting up in the morning of the New Year day everyone may look at it and have good luch for the whole year 

Pateti: Pateti is the New Year of the older school of Parsis. It falls sometimes in September after the South , West  monsoon has lost its vigoour. The day is marked with the putting on of line clothes prayers at the fire temples, greetins, alms –giving and feasting at the homes and in the parks.

Naba Barsha: In Bengal the indigenous era is the Bengali San. It had its beginning in the 5^th Century of the Christian era. An important feature of Bengali New Year celebration is the Prabahat pheries (dawn processions) with music and dance.

Other New Years; The Punjab begin the yar with the first of Vaisakh. Others again begin the eyar with the month oif Ashaa (June –July) The Kahmir Spatarshi year starts with the vernal equinoz the time when the Sun crosess the equator . But the New year of the Buddhist Lamas called Mela loser in Ladakh region of Jammu & Kashmir is celebrated in December . But you must remember another thing God knows our inner feeling. A man gets the fulfillment of the desire he cherished , while practicing sadhana. As one thinks , so one receives.

Pray to God . he is full of compassion . Will He not listen to the words of His devotee? He is the Kalpataru. You will get whatever you desire from Him

will you tell me one thing? Why do you harp so much on sin ? By repeating a hundred tiems. “ I am a sinner”, one eerily becomes a sinner One hsoul have such faith as to be able to say, “What? I have taken the name of God; how can I be a sinner? God is our Father and Mother” Tell Him “O Lord, I have commited sins, but I wont repat them” Chant His name and purify your body and mind. Purify your tongue by singing God’s holy name.

A man can see God, if he combines in himself the force of these three attractions; the attraction of the worldly man, the husband’s attraction for the chaste wife, and the child’s attraction for its mother. If you can unite these form of love and give it all to God. Then you can see Him at once. If a devotee prays to God with real longing. God cannot help revealing Himself to him.

Apple Tree & the Boy

Long ago, there was a huge apple tree. A little boy used to come and play around it. He used to climb the tree and eat apples. He loved the tree and the tree loved to play with him. Time went by. The little boy grew up and no longer played around the tree.

One day, the boy came back to the tree, looking sad. “Come, play with me” the tree said to the boy. “ I am no longer a kid. I don’t play around trees anymore, the boy replied. I need money to buy things for me. “

“Sorry . I don’t have money but you can pluck all my apples and sell them. Then you will have money”

The boy was very excited. He grabbed all the apples and left happily. The boy never came back after plucking the apples.

The tree was sad.

One day , the boy (now a young man) returned and the tree was excited . “Come with me” the tree said, “I don’t have time to play I have to work for my family . we need a house for shelter. Can you help Me?”

“Sorry , I don’t have a house. But you can chop off my branches to build your house, said the tree.

So , the boy cut down all the branches and left happily. The tree was glad to see him happy but the boy never came back The tree was again lonely and sad.

One hot summer, the boy (now a middle age man) returned and the tree was delighted “Come , play with me!” the tree said.

“I am getting old. I want to go sailing to relax myself. Can you give me a boat?”

“Use my trunk to build your boat. You an sail far away and be happy” So the boy cut the tree trunk to make a boat. He went sailing and never returned for a long time.

Finally , the boy returned (now an aged man) after many years. “Sorry, my boy. But I don’t have anything for anymore” the tree said with tears “I don’t need much now, just a place to rest. I am tired, after all these years”, the boy replied.

Moved by the boy’s plight the tree said, “Good! Old tree roots are the best place to lean on and rest. Come sit down with me and rest. The boy sat down. The tree was glad and smiled with tears.

The little story is for everyone . The tree is like our parents . when we are young, we love to play with them when we grow up, we leave them. And only come to them when we need something. No matter what, our parents are always there to give us everything they can afford to, for our happiness. You may think the boy was cruel to the tree, but that is how most of us are. Courtesy Wisdom

Prayer in Daily Life

Since we are engaged in different types of activities, we are bound to get influenced by different types of people and surroundings. Sometimes, even our own mind creates problems for us . Success in work gives rise to egotism. Which leads to arrogance and a superiority complex. Failures make us depressed and create inferiority complex. Guided by our own impure intellect we err and try to justify it with futile arguments Sometimes, we neglect our duties and responsibilities and try to escape from problems, out of fear or weakness. To handle day-to-day affairs. We need to train our intellect, mind, emotions and feelings ,without which we cannot have a happy and peaceful life. This can easily be achieved by developing a prayerful attitude thought-out the day. In Christianity, this is known as ceaseless prayer. Plowing- Most Important Human Occupation

Plow is a tool used in agriculture to prepare large areas of ground for planting. The plow cuts into the soil to a certain depth, lifts it. Turns it over and breaks it up. Plowing has been one of the most important human occupations since the Bronze Age. When the first plows were made.

Until the dawn f the Bronze Age, about 3500 B.C the spade and the hoe were the only implements used to prepare the ground for planting.

In North America while men first introduced the plow to the Indians. The first plow was merely the forked branch of a free. Roughly shaped and dragged along the ground by man. Later man started using oxen and in some Western Counties the oxen were replaced by horses and mules.

In the 18^th century cast Iron plows made their appearance New improvements were made later by the American Charles Newbold and John Deere that had speeded up the process of plowing . After 1850, the introduction of steam plows led to the cultivation of vast areas of land.

Today enormous areas of land are plowed swiftly and efficiently by multibladed machines drawn by powerful diesel tractors. Courtesy wisdom

Have Sraddha________

We always say, even at the time of initiation that without devotion and faith it does not become fruitful. Hence we must have faith. One has to receive the mantra with sraddha. Only then the mantra, like a seed, will sprout and flourish into a full grown tree, bearing flowers and fruits. Hence it must be borne in mind that preparedness before receiving the spiritual initiation is mandatory. In fact, nothing is spiritual life can be achieved without preparation.

The scriptures recommend that a spiritual seeker must approach the guru for learning the ideal by being serviceful, humble, with selfless devotion, making himself pure and blemshless. Why is so much importance laid in the scriptures on preparedness? The reason is , the moment is an invaluable one, when the name of God is presented to us. Receiving that holy name in our heart with faith and devotion and concentrating our mind on it, if we can dive deep into our being, like the oyster, and remain engrossed in it, the most valuable gem will take shape within us. My Best Friend

In a church there was a very good priest who was loved by everyone except for one old man who used to ring the bell . After every sermon the devotees would praise the priest, saying what an excellent speaker he was. But as soon as they had left that old man would go up to the priest and only criticize him. He would find fault with him in every possible way. The father listened to all this patiently and kept quiet but the devotees got very angry when they realized what was happening. They started to call this old man the devil.

After few years the old man died. The devotees were quite happy about this. They went to the priest and said. The devil is finally dead” The priest kept quiet for some time and then with a sad expression on his face said; “Alas! I lost my only friend.” The devotees did not understand what he meant and so he explained. Remember I am not a worldly man. I want to reach God. I want to be humble and remove my ego. But your praises only helped to inflate my ego the old man was the only one who pointed out my mistakes. By making me humble , he brought me closer to God. By thus presenting the universe , in its fundamental aspect, as pure Consciousness only. Vedanta does not destroy the universe or its matter but only illumines the true nature of both, just as modern quantum and relativity physics does not destroy the stable structures of the physical world by presenting the world as an ocean of energy only, but says that the stable familiar world presented by classical physics I sonly a limiting case of the world presented by quantum and relativity physics.

Knowledge does not destroy but it only illumines, says Vedanta. The material universe of daily experience which physics sets about to study, will reveal its true from as pure Consciousness, when physics dissociates the matter that it studies from the dogma of ‘materialism’ that it wrongly associates with it, says Vedanta . Materialism is an intruder in physical science while matter is useful working concept of it , says Thomas Huxley.

How To Overcome Feeling of Inferiority?

There is an essential element in human lie, without which we cannot face the world successfully. That element is self respect.

With self respect you can conquer the world. Without it you are defeated. It should be your firm belief that you are worthy to yourself and to your community.

If you suffer from feeling of inferiority , understand how the feeling has come about, why it persists in your life and take practical steps to be free from such feeling.

A person felt bad in the presence of other people. When it is analyzed it was fond that as a young boy he had a humiliating experience at a party. Later he tired to forget about it. But the experience had stayed with him.

A great deal of inferiority feeling is an expression of earlier humiliation. A small girl was sure of her mother’s affection. The one ambition of her infant life was to be accepted and loved by her mother. To her surprise a brother was born. She developed the feeling that her mother loved the baby but does not love her. And so inferiority feeling troubled her.

What does a child do when in his search for satisfaction finds himself  humiliated? He turns the energies that would normally go into fulfillment and happiness and employs them n his rebellion.

As he cannot find fulfillment in acceptance and love secretly he becomes the enemy of those who seem to “trouble” him and in rebellion, he gets a kind of satisfaction.

As he cannot get his joy out of being admired, he will suffer until his heart suffers with pain. This practice becomes habit forming. You must break this pattern of life at all costs.

As a child, you felt yourself rejected and therefore felt worthless. This was you first mistake. It is the first error you must rectify.

Now repeatedly, you must tell yourself you are wanted and loved you must break the feeling of humiliation and revenge by understating its origin and by giving up the habit that rooted itself in your life.

You must create a new pattern of life. You cannot do it in a day. Constantly the old pattern of worthlessness will try to assert itself again. But you must tontine to try and overcome such feeling.

Tell yourself that you are as good as anyone else .insist on happiness and fulfillment. Build a new habit of thought and experience. Develop feeling of hope, optimism ad happiness. Start every day by strengthening your determination.

Make sure what your real desires are. Do your really want happiness. Affection and success? Work this out every morning before you start the day, Once you have the right burring desire coupled with determination, the way to freedoms is in your hands.  

Believe in yourself. Increase your self respect and appreciate your value . Know you are wanted and loved. Start life afresh knowing that the new satisfaction of love and acceptance are richer in reward. Courtesy wisdom

We should pray for the welfare of all. We should behave in such a manner that no one’s feelings are hurt and no harm is caused to anyone. We must not do anything by which anyone is hurt physically or mentally or whereby evil befalls anyone. The scriptures speak of Ahimsa or non injury. It not only implies not hurting physically or mentally anyone it also means not to think ill of others or harm others. This must be practiced in thought, word and deed.

We must hold on to truth always in such a way that under no circumstance should we deviate from it. We should never have recourse to falsehood. We must honour our commitments. Sri Ramakrishna used to say, One who holds on to truth rests in the lap of God” He further says. “Truth fullness is the austerity for Kaliyuga” I am not saying that it is easy to tick to truth. It is to at al easy. We will have to make a lot of sacrifice in life to observe truthfulness. Hence, it is never an easy job. But we should not forget that holding on to truth is our ideal courtesy spiritual imitation
