The Quiescent Entity
The first meaning of Purush refers to the entity that remains quiescent
within the psycho-physical framework of another. It acts as the silent
observer, much like the head of a family who oversees the preparation for a
wedding but does not directly engage in specific tasks. Similarly, Purush resides hidden within the physical body,
enabling the organs to function under its will. Without the wish of this
cognitive principle, no part of the body can act.
The Primordial Presence
The second meaning of Purush is the entity that precedes all others. In this sense, Purush is the primordial cause of existence, the supreme reflecting principle— Param Purush . Early humans, with their undeveloped intellect, initially perceived natural phenomena such as rain, dawn, or crops as divine forces. Over time, as intellectual capacities evolved, they began to recognize *Param Purush* as the supreme cause of creation.
Ancient thinkers
debated the origin of the universe, attributing it variously to time, nature,
fate, accident, or the five fundamental factors. Yet, as understanding
deepened, it became evident that time is merely a mental construct, a
measurement of motion or action. Without action, time ceases to exist; for
instance, if the moon did not orbit the Earth, the concepts of days, months, or
years would lose their meaning. Thus, time cannot be the original cause of
creation.
Nature and Operative Principles
The search for the
ultimate cause also raised the question: Could nature be the source of all
creation? The answer lies in the relationship between Prakriti (nature) and Purush . Prakriti , the operative principle,
functions within the boundaries of freedom granted by Purush . While Prakriti acts as the immanent power, it derives its
existence and purpose from Purush the transcendental principle. In essence, Prakriti
is not independent and cannot be
considered the ultimate cause of creation.
The transformation of the universe is facilitated by *Prakriti*'s three fundamental principles, but it is neither the material nor the efficient cause of creation. Energy ( Shakti ), devoid of intellect ( Prajna ), is merely a blind and static force. Only when supported by the cognitive principle does it gain direction and purpose.
The Supreme Reflecting Principle
The cognitive
principle is both the material and efficient cause of creation. It is
intricately linked to the creative force, shaping the flow of existence.
However, the true essence lies beyond both cognition and operation. This
ultimate entity is the unmanifested Supreme
Cognition , also known as the Supreme
Reflecting Principle .
As one traverses the
path of synthesis toward the One, it becomes evident that the mutable ( Kshara )
and immutable ( Akshara ) emanate from the unmanifested ( Nirakshara ) Supreme
Cognition. This unmanifested cognition, transcending all dualities and
manifestations, is the true essence of Purush
—the eternal and infinite source of all creation.
In conclusion, Purush symbolizes the supreme consciousness that
governs existence, providing both direction and purpose to the universe. It is
the silent observer, the primordial cause, and the ultimate reality that
underlies all creation.

I drive joy there was a doctor in Benaras who
spent 7 minutes in the morning and evening for mediation on God. Knowing this,
his colleagues and friends laughed at him. One day they argued that he was
wasting 7 precious minutes on something, which he had been misled into
believing. The doctor replied, “Well, if God does not exist, I agree that I am
