Quote
from the True Charm and Power of Vedanta
Fate or
Free will
There are in our country any numbers of fatalists who maintain that the unseen hand of Fate controls everything and no effort on our part will make the difference. There are also those who believe in the supremacy of man’s free will and say that everything is possible with self effort.
Some are of the view that man is the victim of
circumstances. Others argue that man has the power is change circumstances with
the power of his personality . it is said that self-effort and fate are like
the two wheels of chariot the two blades of a par of scissors . but “the
scribbling on the forehead”, “the effort of the stars”, the fruit of action”
are words which we use to explain our failure in any action . Whatever there is
no denying the fact that we ourselves have to strive to uplift our life. We have
to change forward with courage and daring . we have to struggle with trust in our
own effort. There is saying “Six steps are human effort the seventh is divine grace
! Has anybody come up in life without the sprit of enthusiasm to work. Without relentless
effort!
Can you ever drive anything to the goal of success
simply by waiting for the favour of Destiny or Fortune, and not doing anything?
No task is possible in that manner . Such an attitude makes a coward of man. it
makes him morally a slave to evil. People commit errors because of their own weakness.
but they attribute the errors to unfavorable fate, to ill-luck to the
influences of planets and stars! One such person slipped because of his carelessness
but blamed the slippery ground, and found fault with his fate.
If thee were really something like fate which placed
obstructions on our way ot success . we could certainly overcome them by our
own sincere struggle; by arousing the inner spirit which is latent in all of
us.
If fate were so powerful , we would not be
speaking at all about virtues, vices, or the power of the soul. Human beings
are not like logs of wood or bricks of clay.
No man can ever lift himself up from the mire of
misery if he clings to the attitude. “Fate is responsible for this kind of act
on my part. I am not responsible for my actions. I am only being helplessly
pushed by the unseen hand of Fate” It is man’s ignorance, which makes him feel
that he is weak, and that his is ever dependent on the invisible hand of fate. This
ignorance will lead him only to his degradation. To utilize the present is to conquer
the fate.

We are all interconnected. As members of one
large family, when one of us suffers, we all suffer. The global community is
experiencing an unprecedented challenge. We are all looking for stability,
reassurance and comfort.
As our physical, mental and emotional health
bears the impact of the global pandemic, let us remember to enhance our
spiritual health, and our spiritual capacity, as it will help us get through
these challenging times. We can enhance our spiritual capacity through
meditation.
While meditation does not eliminate the problems
and challenges of life, it helps us cultivate a wider perspective. The
spiritual wisdom that we gain as we go within helps us understand the bigger
picture of life, which enables us to look at difficulties in a different way
and, thus, respond in a calmer, relaxed manner. We learn, through meditation
that life’s panorama is constantly in flux. All things in life must come to
pass. All challenges in life will subside in time.
–But, if He exists?
I drive joy There was a doctor in Benaras who
spent 7 minutes in the morning and evening for mediation on God. Knowing this,
his colleagues and friends laughed at him. One day they argued that he was
wasting ten precious minutes on something, which he had been misled into
believing. The doctor replied, “Well, if God does not exist, I agree that I am
wasting ten minutes a day. But, if He exists? I am afraid you are wasting your
entire lifetime. I prefer to waste ten minutes rather than a lifetime. Why
should you grudge me the 10 minutes joy that I derive 4m.-
