The Joy of
Living
Very often we find many people very morose and
serious with very little smile or cheer on their faces. It is, indeed,
unfortunate that many people, burdened as they are with worries, never look at
the positive aspects of life. it is true that life is a blend of good and bad experiences
and it requires skill to face them with equanimity.
No doubt life is harsh sometimes, very harsh
for some persons. They are unhappy for variety of reasons such as poor health. Lack
of food/money. ill-treatment by friends or relatives etc.
While these do affect one’s peace of mind, such
worries should not be allowed to dominate one’s way of life. It has to be realized
as Shakespeare said. “There is nothing god or bad; it is thinking that makes it
so” Our scriptures, mythologies, literary scholars street have point that peace
of mind is possible by practice of yoga, mediation, music and find arts. No problem
or worry will last long. There is no point in wasting time by brooding over our
problems. Every problem can be overcome by training our mind.
Most of our worries are due to passion,
possession, attachment to persons and jealously . if we take note of famous
Tamil Saying; “Theedhum Nanmaym pirar thara Varaa” Which means that we are the cause
of good and bad thins and that there is no point in blaming others. It implies if
we know how to adapt ourselves, avoid anger, harsh words, avarice and jealously,
we can have peace of mind.
Money is no doubt required up to a point. We have
to work hard to earn it truthfully but money cannot provide peace of mind.
If would , therefore, be fair to conclude
that if we can have contentment, hard work, truthfulness and compassion for all
lives including animals, we can experience the joy of living without fear or
violence. This is indeed, the essence of teachings of saints and scriptures of various
religions but many of the followers do not realize it. Courtesy wisdom
Quote from
true Charm and Power of Vedanta
If you have good thoughts in your mind, your
face will show it; if you have bad thoughts, that too the face will show. This
is why the face is said to be the mirror of a man’s heart.
But is this always true? What if a man tires
to hid his feelings? He may smile but inwardly he may have anger and hatred. He
smiles only to deceive you so that you may not suspect his evil designs. To a shrewd
observer the smile will look like a grimace, but an innocent person will be
taken in by it. The face of a person often determines your future relations
with him.’Love at first sight’ is not an exaggeration. You meet a person and at
once you begin to like him. His face tells you he is a good man and you think
what his ace tells you is right. Your first impression may not be correct,
still you go by the first impression until something happens that forces you to
change your opinion.
But a man is not always the same. He may
change and with that his face also may change. Let us say your first impression
of him was bad because his face told you so. But he may have started changing
since you first saw him and the change may have been much more enormous than
you thought possible. He looked savage but now he is quite human. You see the change
in his face. His face is changing, changing from savage to human , from human
to divine. Hindu yogis seek unity with God and they attain it. When they attain
that unity they are no longer human, they are divine.
They are divine not only in character but
also in physiognomy , in the face most of all . looking at a true yogi, people
will stop and ask themselves. Who is he. A man or God? His face will glow with
the beauty of the spirit. If they have any evil intent, a glance at his face
will remove it from their mind. It will also give them comfort if they are in
pain, courage if they are gripped with fear. The yogi need not say anything. His
mere presence will inspire the best thoughts in others. Courtesy Vedanta in Practice.
But, if He
exists?
I drive joy
There was a doctor in Benaras who spent 7 minutes in the morning and evening for
mediation on God. Knowing this, his colleagues and friends laughed at him. One
day they argued that he was wasting ten precious minutes on something, which he
had been misled into believing. The doctor replied, “Well, if God does not
exist, I agree that I am wasting ten minutes a day. But if He exists? I am
afraid you are wasting your entire lifetime. I prefer to waste ten minutes
rather than a lifetime. Why should you grudge me the 10 minutes joy that I
derive 4m.
