Home Sweet
Home
John Howard
Payne- who wrote “Home Sweet Home” never had a home of his own.
Payne was born
in New York City in 1791, His father was an unsuccessful schoolmaster who kept
his family on the move. Payne was living alone in New York boarding house when,
at the age of only 14, he startled the theatrical world by publishing a
magazine on show business. Although he alone make up the entire staff, the
magazine was an instant success.
While still in
teens, Payne won fame as an actor and a playwright. Then, in 1813, he went to London
to try his luck there . in 1820 after a
theatrical failure, he was sent to London’s
infamous Fleet Street Prison for debt Friends helped him to escape and he fled
to Paris.
Still homeless
and broke, he wondered the streets of Paris
thinking of suicide. Finally, he found a job writing the words for a new operetta
called Clair. One of the songs he wrote for this was “Home Sweet Home”
Although the song was a worldwide hit. Payne never made any money from it. He was
always broke, always on the move
Finally through friends,
he was made the United States Counsel in Tunisia-then a very bleak hardship
post. He died there , still alone in 1852, his grave marked only by a pepper
tree.
Years later,
Payne’s body was brought back to the U.S and buried with honours in Washington’s
Oak Hall cemetery.
The homeless man
who had written the most popular song of his century had come home at last.

Quote from
the True Charm and Power of Vedanta
In order to practice
meditation , every aspirant requires, at least in the beginning, some concrete
objects on which to mediate. Technically, Yoga has been defined as “a method of
stopping the mind-stuff from acquiring modification’s According to Patanjal,,
the most effective, way of doing this is to concentrate the “mind-stuff” by
meditation on God. On the assumption (based on authentic experience) that the
sound-symbol of God is the sacred word “Om”
the aspirant is asked to repeat this word at time of mediation, as also when doing
Prayaam
Raja-Yoga (the Royal
Path of Union) is probably the most scientific
and partial of all the four Yoga’s. The profound knowledge of the mind,
including its subconscious depths and its superconscious heights, on which
Patanjali has based his teaching, might make any modern psychologist green with
envy.
This Yoga does
not ask us to take anything for granted. It does not talk of “Grace” or of “The
chosen Few”. It simply says that whoever sincerely follows the instructions
will get at least some results-more or less, according to his capacity –and that
these results will fortify his belief and encourage him to proceed further. It goes
without saying that, as in the case of all other practices fast results can be achieved
only by those who are most energetic.
But, if He
exists?
I drive joy
There was a doctor in Benaras who spent 7 minutes in the morning and evening
for mediation on God. Knowing this, his colleagues and friends laughed at him.
One day they argued that he was wasting ten precious minutes on something,
which he had been misled into believing. The doctor replied, “Well, if God does
not exist, I agree that I am wasting ten minutes a day. But, if He exists? I am
afraid you are wasting your entire lifetime. I prefer to waste ten minutes
rather than a lifetime. Why should you grudge me the 10 minutes joy that I
derive 4m.
