Superstitions are rooted in belief.

Superstitions are rooted in belief.
Most popular superstitions have a long history. They are rooted in human experience, religion and belief. They have influence on human lives even if people make fun of them in their rational moments.
It is believed that crossed fingers bring good fortune on any work of significance. This superstition was a way of making the Sign of the Cross. An innocent act of opening umbrellas indoors, something unnatural, is believed t bring ill-fortune on one’s head.
The mirror superstition dates back to olden days when glass mirror came into use. As in disturbed waters, in a cracked mirror, the reflection is broken up. The primitive man believed that injury was done to him when his reflection was broken up in disturbed water . Today people similarly believe that to break or crack a mirror is to do oneself injury.
To walk under a ladder is considered something unlucky and sinful act. Since ancient times people regarded ladder as revered symbol of man’s ascent from earth into paradise . So to walk beneath it is to misuse the sacred symbol and spoil one’s chances of getting info paradise.
In olden days the all-black cat with fiery eyes invisible in the dark was respected greatly with reverence and wonder by people. They thought that it was the close associate of the traditional witch who terrorised people with witchcraft. Even today the black cat frightens people who meet him unexpectedly in any dark path.
Blessing the sneezers is a custom which began in 750 A.D It was recognised by Pope(Vatican) as a protection against infection when plague germs were believed to be airborne . By saying “God bless you” a person hoped that he sneezer would not die from an infection. Even today the practice of blessing the sneezer continues.
No substitute for a sense of values
What is needed is the resolute courage to stand up and be counted in support of a view which is not popular.
There is no substitute for a sense of values . it will enable you to find happiness within yourself and joy in the most ordinary of things which we often miss.
Talking of the inner strength of the Indian masses. Prof Galbrath observed that there is a “richness in their poverty”. The inner strength of our people which enables them to be dignified and to hold their heads high despite their adversity is the result of our age- old tradition of spiritual values. Today ,there is a definite risk of our losing that richness while failing at the same time to shed poverty.
There are periods in world history which are characterised by the loss of the sense of values and the time we live in are such an age. All our troubles may be summed up in three lines, if I may quote T.S. Elite; “Where is the life we have lost in living?” “Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge ?” Where is the knowledge we have lost in information.
Quote from the True charm and Power of Vedanta.
We, Hindus , are criticised by other religionists as worshippers of idols, because foreigners do not understand our method of worship. This worship of God in His personal forms is the highest form or worship; for only that enables man to realise the highest love. Infinite God is not so glorious as finite God. Why?God’s nature is infinite; but when that infinite Being is forced to become finite, there is some power which is greater than that of the Infinite One , the power of love. In His infinite nature of God has several times appeared to several of His devotee. But God as a man, other nations and other religionists cannot understand. They bring in the aid of philosophy to understand Godhead, and it teaches them that God can only be infinite and omnipotent and omniscient and all gracious. He can be finite as well as infinite at any time; for His Maya sakti is inscrutable. With this power He can become finite, infinite and even something more. Through it the One appears as many the infinite appears as finite. This maya is also called Prakriti , the material cause of the universe. He is the Lord of this maya; apart from this He is the eternal One, always the same , beyond time, space and causation.
But, if He exists?
I drive joy There was a doctor in Benaras who spent 7 minutes in the morning and evening for mediation on God. Knowing this, his colleagues and friends laughed at him. One day they argued that he was wasting ten precious minutes on something, which he had been misled into believing. The doctor replied, “Well, if God does not exist, I agree that I am wasting ten minutes a day. But, if He exists? I am afraid you are wasting your entire lifetime. I prefer to waste ten minutes rather than a lifetime. Why should you grudge me the 10 minutes joy that I derive 4m.

How to Make new Friendship

Everything is In his Hands
A man just got married and was returning home with his wife. They were crossing a lake in a boat when suddenly a great storm arose. The man was a warrior, but the woman became very much afraid because it seemed almost hopeless-the boat was small and the storm was really huge, and any moment they were going to be drowned . But the man sat silently, calm and quiet, as if nothing was happening.
The woman was trembling and she said, “Are you not afraid ? This may be our last moment of life! It doesn’t seem that we will be able to reach the other shore. Only some miracle can save us, otherwise death is certain. Are you not afraid? Are you mad?”
The man laughed and took the sword out of its sheath. The woman was even more puzzled. Then the brought the naked sword close to the woman’s neck-so close that just a small gap was there , it was almost touching her neck. He asked. “Are you afraid?”
She started t laugh and said, “ why should I be afraid? It the sword is in your hands, why should I be afraid? I know you love me”.
He put the sword back and said, “This is my answer. I know God loves me, and the sword in His hands, and the storm is in His hands so whatsoever is going to happen is going to happen is going to happen is going to be good . if we survive, good; if we don’t survive , good because everything is in his hands, and he will not do anything wrong”. How to start a new friendship?
Begin in a conversation with a neighbour in the bus or at the theatre simply for the purpose of initiating a conversation. If you speak to another person, the likelihood is that his aims might be somewhat similar to your own.
Most of the individuals who make up a crowd waiting at a railway station or at a theatre are jut a lonely as you are. No one says a word and everyone is bored. Someone must take the initiative to make the first step towards establishing a social contact.
Great minds are most coordinal and most friendly. I have known socially maladjusted adults felt insulted by the greeting of a stranger but I have never known a really good person to be so insulted.
Part of the technique of making friends consists in breaking the ice. It is for this reason that weather, sports and politics exist as topics of small conversation. They serve as the lubricating oil of human life and are as important as good manners.
To those who are incapable of making these contacts, I suggest to go up to strangers and inquire the time or the way to reach a certain address, regardless of the value of such information. This is the first step in training yourself to talk to strangers.
The second step in the art of making friends is making yourself valuable to the people you have contacted. It is a very good technique to begin with people who are overlooked by the average proud men and women. It is always valuable to be pleasant to elderly people , to cripples , to shy and timid persons and children.
It is encouraging to any elderly individual if a young man or woman comes up to talk with him/her.
Being attentive to the overlooked minority is doubly valuable because it gives you the opportunity of proving you social-mindedness. It not only enriches the overlooked and adds to the store of human happiness. (condensed) Courtesy ‘Psychologist Magazine”
Quote from the True Charm and Power of Vedanta
Now it may be asked; If in reality there is only one Soul in all, whence comes this diversity of souls in different individuals? We are born with the idea that every man has an independent soul. Yes , so it is; but that does not prove that there is any essential diversity of souls(SHIVA) in individuals it is indeed true that there are innumerable numbers of images of the sun reflected in ponds , lakes , rivers, seas and waves, but that does not prove that there are many suns. The sun is one, only it appears to be many when reflected in water or glass . such is the case here . The Universal Soul is reflected in every individual, and from this springs the diversity. When a man comes to know this true Self, of which he is an image and becomes one with it, he finds himself reflected in all.
When he reaches that supreme state and gains a permanency there, he is one with eternal , omnipresent , omnipotent and omniscient Mind-the Universal Soul; that is , he finds himself to be the Brahman; He is then above al trouble and turmoils of the world; free from all its cares and anxieties, seeing himself in all, and all in himself, and feeling himself to be the one Soul of the entire creation. Now he exclaims with he Great Maharshi Ashtavakra, “The universe has emanated from me, it is destined to end in me, as and earthen vessel loses itself in earth at last, as the waves die in water, as a golden ornament, losing its from, become gold in the end. O joy! I how down to my eternal Self which has no end even when all beings , from the highest to the lowest, with the entire universe, die O joy! I bow down to myself, as I am alone without a second and even though I have a body, I neither come nor go; for I cover the shoe Universe.
O joy! I bow down to myself; for there is none abler and clever than myself as the universe is held in my body, without even touching it. O joy! I bow down to myself who has nothing , or has all that can be comprehended by thought and language.’
