How To Manage Time?
Monday 29–August- 2011
How To Manage Time?
Time is the scarcest resource, says Peter Drucker and unless it is managed, nothing else can be managed.
Time is money . In the words of Theophrastus, time is the most valuable thing a man can spend. Time never comes back. Time is irreversible.
A mahraja came to meet Mr. Madhusudan Das, a great national leader who is otherwise known as Bhrarat Gaurav(Pride of India). The appointment was at 4.p.m The majharaja in feudal style came in half an hour late Madusudan Das’s memorable words on the occasion were; “Mahraja, the clock also did not wait for you. How can I wait for you”.
The lost time does not return. Time and tide wait for none .Time is so important, that we must make mximum use of it. A day has 24 hours. Analyze time . How much time is spent on studies, sports and sleep?Write down how you spend time. It is an eye opener. You know where you stand. Do not attempt too much at once. Have a realistic time estimate .
Organize time . Think how time has been spent . Have specific goals and a time limit. The greatest thing in this world is not so much where we are, but in what direction we are moving, says Oliver Wendell Holmes. If you do not know where you are going you may go anywhere.
A goal is achievable, if you have discipline, discipline is not merely
Do’s and Don’ts . It is a kind of order that appears to bind but in fact it sets people free to fly.
Discipline begets determination. Josh Billing says , Be like a postage stamp . Stick to something until you get there”. Great people are just ordinary people with an extraordinary amount of determination.
The secret of success is enthusiasm. Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm, adds Coleridge. Enthusi9asm enabled Webster to spend 36 years in his dictionary. It enabled Thomas Edison to remove ten thousand defects before he invented the incandescent lamp. George Stephenson worked for fifteen long years to perfect his locomotive . Mark Twain , when asked the reasons for his success, exclaimed “I was born excited”. So , be excited, be enthusiastic, be time conscious . success is yours.
Learn to communicate . most of the controversies arise in life on account of misunderstanding Iacocca says, “you can have bright ides, but if you cannot get them across, your ideas won’t get you anywhere.”
Robert Frost says with a touch of hour “half the world is composed of people who have something to say and cannot and the other half who have nothing to say and keep on saying it”. Know what you speak and more importantly , how you speak.
Listen to people. You have got two ears but one mouth. You should hear twice of what you speak. David Schwartz says “Big people monopolize the listening Small people monopolized the talking. Winston Churchill used to listen a lot. We should never out off a suggestion with a dismissal. President Johnson kept a small signboard which read ‘you are learning nothing when you are doing all talking.
Andrew Caregle remarked, “it has been my experience that a man who cannot reach a decision promptly , once he has all the necessary facts of the decision at hand, cannot be depended upon to carry through any decision he may take. I have also found that men who reach decisions promptly usually have the capacity to move with definiteness of purpose in other circumstances. ‘. Making a decision-even bad decision is better that making no decision at all. You must make several decisions.
Which goals to choose? which ways to invest time?
What are the alternatives available to select from?
Decide fast, As Edmond c. Lynch said, “If I made a decision fast, I was right 60% of the time . If I made a decision carefully, I would be right 70%, but it was always worth it. “
Value your time. Wast netiehr time nor money but make the best use of it. Do not let others waste your time.
Power Without Justice is Tyranny
Justice without power is inefficient, power without justice is tyranny. Justice without power is opposed, be cause there are always wicked men . Power without justice is son questioned. Justice and power must there for be brought together , so that whatever is just may be powerful, and whatever is powerful may be just.
Work is doing what you now enjoy
Work si doing what you now enjoy for the sake of a future which you clearly see and desire. Drudgery is doing under strain what you don’t now enjoy and for no end that you can now appreciate.
JUMP: The last word is parachuting
What is Acid rain?
Acid rain is rain that contain dangerous pollutants. The pollutants are caused by nitrogen and sulphur let out into the atmosphere by large industrial plants using oil and coal. They are dissolved into the atmosphere. When it rains, the raindrops are full of sulphuric, nitric, and hydrochloric acids.
Quote from the Essence of The Gita
Everything in this world keeps changing. The law binds every material thing. Who keeps changing . this law binds every material thing. Who can say why and in which direction everything is moving? The evolutionists claim that a gradual progress is taking place. But they can’t say why it is taking place. From a seed evolve the tree, the flowers and the fruits Why? For what purpose? This question has always risen in the human mind in the past as well as in the present. But so far it has not been answered. The scholars in the West feel that the purpose of al this is to establish a well-organized and healthy society . in India the scriptures say that this mysterious, cosmic chain of creation, preservation and destruction is without beginning.
In God’s eyes this world is merely a purposeless play(Lila) . If we say that God wished to fulfill some purpose by creating the world, we would also attribute imperfection to Him. So the sages say that this creation is merely God’s sport. He remains unchanged even after creation. But from our point of view, if we try to understand why we struggle in this world, it appears that the purpose behind it is to snap the bonds of relative existence (samsara) and to attain Self-knowledge. The purpose is to attain perfection and to go beyond all misery and suffering . it may also be said that a society would be ideal in every respect were it composed of those who were masters of their senses, people who had attained Self-knowledge, such an ideal society would always have peace and bliss, as the inner deficiencies of all its members would have been totally eliminated.
I drive joy
There was a doctor in Benaras who spent 5 minutes in the morning and evening for mediation on God. Knowing this, his colleagues and friends laughed at him. One day they argued that he was wasting ten precious minutes on something, which he had been misled into believing. The doctor replied, “Well, if God does not exist, I agree that I am wasting ten minutes a day. But, if He exists? I am afraid you are wasting your entire lifetime. I prefer to waste ten minutes rather than a lifetime. Why should you grudge me the 10 minutes joy that I derive from? I am not robbing you of your joy; why should you rob me of mine. He asked. The critics were silenced. –Baba- Chinna Katha

Meditation
Monday 22–August- 2011
Meditation.
No one else can Give up your Sin for you
All your sins and sorrows , your fears and anxieties are your own, and you can cling to them or you can give them up. Of your own accord you cling to your unrest; of your own accord you can come to abiding peace. no one else can give up sin for you, you must give it up yourself. The greatest Teacher can do no more than walk the way of Truth for himself, and point it out to you ; you your self must walk it for yourself. You can obtain freedom and peace alone by your own efforts, by yielding up that which binds the soul, and which is destructive of peace.
Little Courtesies of Everyday
‘Thank you”, ”Please” or Excuse me” are little words. But they can mean much in our day to day activities. They can make all the difference in a man’s career. They are like drops of oil which lubricate many wheels of a creaking machinery.
Businessman and salesman cannot afford to miss them. And ordinary people who miss them, do not look beyond their nose! The present day madness for speed and hurry however, finds these “Daily little courtesies” out of date, old fashioned and perhaps obstacles to progress. Thereby we love goodwill and good dividends.
A businessman finding the change in the flight schedule of his plane for getting home wrote a telegram to his wife keeping that limit to 15 words. The telegraph operator, a woman, looked a it over and asked him, “Are you married to this woman? Started, he answered that he was. “ Then you would better add “LOVE” she suggested. “It cost you just a rupee more and it has a lot of value for the money.”
Little courtesies of everyday can cheer your friends, colleagues and relatives to be happy and merry. When you have some thing nice to say be prompts-and don’t delay.
Because he made every effort to go forward.
Some time ago we heard a strange story. The pilot of a small transport plane said that he had been caught in a one hundred and fifty-mile gale, which held his plane perfectly still. The motors were roaring, he claimed, but the plane was not moving an inch.
“ It was fate,” he concluded, “to be going one hundred and fifty miles and hour and yet not be going anywhere at all!”
Sometimes we seem to be doing something very much like this. No matter how hard we push for ward, we seem to be getting no where at all. Then is the time for us to remember that he who does not try to go ahead is bound to find that he is going back.
If the pilot of the plane ha shut off his motors, he would probably never have lived to tell the story, It was only because he made every effort to go forward that he was even able to stand still!(East and West Series)
All that you are is a result of all that you have thought.
Good words make us laugh; good deeds makes us silent.
Who would love you then?
“Do you love me , dear?”
“Very much!”
“And would you give your life for me?”
“Yes! But who would love you then?”
Will that make it any lighter?
An old man brought a package to the village post office. But the clerk refused to accept it. When is the matter?” asked the old man. “It is to heavy. You will have to put more stamps on it” replied the clerk. The old man was curious “And if I put more stamps on it, will that make it any lighter?” he asked.
Quote from the Essence of The Gita
Every chapter of the Gita is called a yoga. Yoga means to join or to unite. It is a way to unite ourselves with God. The first chapter is called the “Yoga of Despondency”(visada yoga). Why is despondency a yoga? Because the despondency of Arjuna was instrumental in taking him toward God. Hence the name “Yoga of Depnondecy.” In the same way, the other chapter of the Gita have names such as the “Yoga of Knowledge”(samkhya yoga), the “Yoga of Work”(karma yoga), the “Yoga of Renunciation” (sannyasa yoga,) and so on.
Some may say that the Gita was taught only to Arjuna; What significance can it have for us? None of us are going to take apart in any war. Nor do we ordinary people have anything in common with the great warrior Arjuna. How can the teaching given to such a great student be of any benefit to us?
In answered it could be said that although Arjuna was much superior to us, he was also a human being . we too are human beings. Just as he was deluded at times, we too are deluded often. Like him, we to are called upon to face many obstacles and calamities in our quest for truth. Like him again, we too are in the midst of both inner and outer warfare. That is why the study of the Gita holds a message for us; give us peace of mind. And offers solution to the problems of life. Thanks to the study f the Gita , those he had lost their way have shed tears of repentance and have changed their entire life-course and directed it toward high ideals.

Four Kinds of Silence
Monday 15–August- 2011
Four Kinds of Silence
Silence is of four kinds; Silence of speech, Silence of the eye, Silence of the ear, and silence of the mind. Only the last is pure silence and is the most important. The commentary of silence is the best commentary as illustrated in Lord Dhakshinamurti. Only silence is the Eternal Speech, the One Word, the Heart-to-Heart talk.
Silence is like the even flow of electric current. Speech is like obstruction the current for lighting and other purposes. However much a jnani might talk, he is still the silent one. However much he might work, he is still the Quiet one. His voice is the incorporeal, voice. His walk is not on the earth. It is like measuring the sky with the sky.
Man and Money
Money is essential for all. It is a must for existence. One has to toil and labour to get it.
Man without money is like a flower without honey. While there is value for money , one has to stick to certain principles in dealing with money matters . Of course life becomes miserable without money and one cannot lead a comfortable life without sufficient money. But one should not live only to earn money. One should not give too much importance for money in one’s life . one has to set some principles an guidelines to be followed in one’s life.
As per Swami Chinmayananada, “We live in a wonderful universe in which everyone and everything give. The trees give, the rivers give, the earth gives, the Sun, the Moon, the stars give. Why then must we be anxious only to take to amass, to gather and to hoard?”
Money makes many things. Money can save a man. Money can kill a man. Is money responsible for either? No. it is the man! Money cannot be the goal of our live; never. Money teaches man great lessons, but silently. When money is gained, he learns something. When money is lost he learns something. When money is present he learns something. When money is donated, he learns something. What he learns is more valuable than money itself.
What is money? As per Shri Swami Prushottamananda of Sri Ramakrishna Ashram, money has different meanings for different people:
There are men who are studious and industrious, for them time is money. There are men who are civilized and cultured; for them self-respect is money. There are men who are courageous and adventurous, for them self-confidence is money. There are spiritual aspirations and discipline is money. There are men who are selfish and sensual; for them money alone is money!”
Money can bring prosperity money can bring adversity. Money is neither good nor bad. Its goodness and badness lies in how one uses it.
“Some are corrupt with regard to money. Some are corrupt with regard to women. Some are corrupt with regard to power. Corruption does not lie in money , women or power. It is in the mind. Educate the mind and eradicate corruption” said Swami Purushottmananda.
One must not be proud of one’s money. if you say that you are right, then one can remind you that there are richer man than you and others ranchers still and so on.
If a person hoards more money, he will get into a number of problems. If a person develops lust for earning more money , he loses his peace of mind, he will not get sleep, he will forget all human values. It is like drinking salt water. The more you drink the more you feel thirst to drink.
A person who has a lust for money does not care for any moral and ethical values. He is ready to do anything and everything for money. Is there any value and meaning for such life? What is the difference between man and animal. God has given thinking capacity to human being to differentiate what is good and what is a bad. If he unable to distinguish between these two he is worse than the animal.
Wise Man fills Himself with Good
Think not lightly of good saying. “It will not come to me. “Drop by drop is the water pot filled, Like wise, the wise man. Gathering it little by little , fills himself with good- Dharmapada.
Laugh
“How did you get that black eye, Mrs. Shobha?”
“Well sir , my husband came out of prison on his birthday”
An I wished him many happy returns”
Putting the watches to the ears
Two priests, known for their longwinded sermons, were having a chat. One said. “ It looks very bad when people start looking at their watches in the midst of the sermon. “the other said, “That is tolerable ; worse is when the listeners start putting their watches to the ear to check whether the watches have not stopped.”
The Universe
True universe, both inner and outer, has been the subject of modern science and philosophy , Chemistry, physics, zoology, botany , geology and astronomy treat more or less of the outer universe, Chemistry wants to find out the elements whose innumerable combinations have brought into existence the countless objects that makeup the universe , while physics tries find those law’s that regulate it. Zoology treats of the animal kingdom, while botany deals with the vegetable kingdom. Geology tires to find out the inner formation and nature of our earth, whereas astronomy , in right earnest, seeks to know all about the heavenly bodies. Their relative distances, the period of their revolving motions and so on. In fact it want to know all about the universe. Physiology enters inside our physical self. There it finds how foodstuff is transformed into blood, how the latter is made to circulate al over the body by the contraction and expansion of the heart, how in the course of its circulation it meets the wants and excretes the waste of all the tissues and organs of our body. Psychology in turn treats of our finer self, the mind, And philosophy finally dives still deeper and wants to know something about our souls and their relation to the universe.
So science is struggling hard to unravel the mystery of creation; let us see with what success. It has proved beyond all doubts the indestructibility of matter. It has analyses the human mind and believes in the unexpended immaterial nature of our souls. As regards a creator, it is either skeptic or agnostic. So far as this aspect of its researches is concerned, the result is not at all satisfactory. But in course of time it may be expected to define more clearly its ideas respecting mind, soul and God.
Gems of Thought
The greatest test of courage on the earth is to bear defeat without losing heart.
To make no mistakes is not in the power of many . but from their errors and mistakes the wise and good learn the wisdom for the future.
The time for extracting a lesson from history is ever at hand for them, who are wise.
He has not learned the lesson of the life who does not everyday surmount a fear.
Friendship is forgetting what one gives, remembering what one receives.
Unknown steadfast citizen
Surely the hero whose name is splashed in headlines for some singular spectacular deed of velour is no more a patriot than the unknown, steadfast citizen who year after year quietly and unselfishly benefits his nation.
Quote from the Essence of The Gita
You have been mourning for those who should not be mourned for. Yet you speak words of wisdom!
“You speak like a scholar or like someone who has attained supreme knowledge but you are mourning over your kith and kin. A truly wise person does not mourn even when the body-one’s own or someone else’s is being destroyed. Your words and actions are not in harmony. “ Sri, Ramakrishna also used to tell us, “Make your thoughts and speech one”. Who can stop our progress once our thoughts and speech become identical? Such is the power of this single practice that whatever we need will come of itself.

Best ‘Ship’ On The Earth
Monday 8–August- 2011
Best ‘Ship’ On The Earth
Could you guess a ship that provides people with a place to stay without any restriction, yet assures a safe voyage in the troubled waters of the seas? And, larger the strength of passengers. Higher is the sea-worthiness of the ship . That ship is called Friendship.
Great men have spoken a lot about friendship. Here are some of their comments.
Who is a friend?
“A friend is need a friend indeed”.
“One who forget what he gives and remembers what he receives.”
How to make friends?
“Friendship is not a thing just happens; it is to be created and nurtured.”
“Like any other skill, building friendship has to be practiced.”
“When you forget about getting as much as you give, you will make more friends.
“Be friendly to others and friends will soon flock around you.”
How to maintain friendship
“Friendship is like money easier made than kept”
“If you want it keep your friends, you should not give them advice unwanted”.
Just as you feel happy to help a friend, give him a chance to help you.”
What is strength of friendship?
“No man is useless while he has a friend.”.
“A friend is a single soul dwelling in two bodes.”
“Friendship makes prosperity brighter while it lightens adversity by sharing its grief and anxieties”.
“A brother may not be a friend but a friend will always be a brother.”.
“Friendship is like sound health, the value of its is not known until it is lost.”
But beware!
“A friend is power is a friend lost”.
“A fiends to everybody is a friend to nobody”.
“The loss of a friend is like the loss of limb , time may heal the wound, but the loss cannot be set right”.
“Friendship is like chinaware, once broken it cannot be mended and if at all mended , the scar will be there.”
And mind you…
“A friend is a present you give yourself”.
If your hands cannot be employed usefully
In the pocket- book of the Hon. Stephen Allen, who was drowned, when the “Henry Clay” was buried on the Hudson, was found a printed slip of which the following is a copy. It is worthwhile to be engraved on every young man’s heart-
Make few promises
Always speak the truth.
Live up to your engagements.
Drink no kind of intoxicating liquors.
Keep your own secrets if you have any.
Do not marry until you are able to support a wife.
When you speak to a person, look at him in the face.
Ever live within your income.
Small and steady gains give competency with tranquil mind.
Your character cannot be injured, except by your own acts.
When you retire to bed, think over what you have been doing during the day.
Never speak evil of anyone.
Keep good company or none.
Never play a game of chance.
Good character is above all things else.
Keep yourself innocent if you would be happy.
Make no haste to be rich, if you would prosper.
Save when you are young to spend when you are old
Never run into dept unless you see a way to get out again.
Good company and Good conversation are the sinews of virtue .
If anyone speaks evil of you , let your life be such that no one will believe him.
Do not be idle; if your hands can not be employed usefully , attend to the cultivation of your mind.
The greatest remedy of anger is delay
What a friend. It is a person with whom you dare to be yourself.
The only way to speak the truth is to speak lovingly.
Laugh
Wife: Darling , mother says she nearly died laughing over those stories you told her.
Husband; Is that so! Where is she? I will tell her some more funnier stories.
A cheque
“At last,” said the writer of poems, “I have written something that will be accepted by any magazine . “What is it?” asked his friend, “A cheque for a years subscription, “was the reply
Deft Definitions
CLASSIC: Something that everybody want to have read and nobody wants to read.
POETRY: Something not worth saying in the common language.
MORALS; Consideration which the poor cannot afford and the rich do not.
PESSIMIST: A person with a grouse that he was born himself and not someone else.
EXPERT: One who knows more and more about less and less.
Quote from the Essence of The Gita
Those who are affected by a serious illness or difficulty or those who are totally helpless , surrender themselves to God with great intensity. This is called the devotion of the distressed.
Enquirer-devotees are those who have the following characteristics; their mind is assailed by various doubts. They are particularly eager to know whether this world has any creator and who is responsible for the constant changes occurring every-where in this world; they no longer enjoy material comforts and sense pleasures; no sooner do they see a holy or illumined person than they runs at to him or her and seek answers to their questions; they mediate in solitude in order to understand higher truths.
The third types of devotee is the enjoyment seeker. These are people who worship God when their mind are full of some desire but have no power in them to fulfill that desire.
The fourth type is the seeker of knowledge. This devotee is the greater of them all. Sri Krishna says.
Among them, the seekers of knowledge excel due to their constant steadfastness and devotion to the One. The them I am supremely dear and they are dear to Me. (7.17)
Their minds are always united with God. Such seeker of knowledge with their one-pointed devotions are the greatest devotees. Their minds have transcended desire, greed, and love for sensual and material pleasures. That is why the adjective “devoted to the One” (eka-bhakti) is used to describe them. Their single-minded devotion flows ceaselessly, like a river, toward the lotus feet of God. Its special characteristic is beautifully illustrated in the Devi Gita. The stream of one-pointed devotion. Like oil poured from one vessel into another , never steps or wavers even when hit by the wind of worldliness, it continues to flow without any break.
About the characteristic of the illumined person, Sri Krishna says in the Gita;
The great soul who has realized that everything is permeated by God has attained knowledge; Such people are very rare(7.19)
