Look within (Recycled story c/f)

Monday, July 21, 2008

Well done is better than well said.

When people cease to complain , they cease to think.

Healthy , well-informed and balanced criticism is the ozone of public life.

Where boasting ends, there dignity begins.

Aim at the sun, and you may not reach it, but your arrow will fly far higher than if aimed at an object on a level with yourself.

We cannot see outside what we are not inside.

Experience is the best of schoolmasters. Only the school fee is heavy.

Look Within

The quality of our lives depends more on what we are inside than outside. But how many of us really look within? We need to think right. Hence it is essential to look within and create an order therein .

We are programmed to believe that happiness is outside. We are products of such programming. It has been ingrained in us that joy and happiness are outside and the myth governs our lives. The process of thinking involves flow of thoughts. Thoughts move outward in search of happiness, name, fame, money or power. Happiness however does not result from material affluence. It is a result of our attitude to life .

Happiness is a result of our being totally in the present. Enlightenment happens in the present. But our lives are always focused either on the past or future. Life is in the present. So be present in the present. Then a different ‘presence’ opens up. Whatever you are doing, be total in it. Bring in your totality of being in the ‘here and now’ .

When you are looking at a flower, can you just look? If you look at it from thoughtfulness, thoughts interpret it as a good or bad flower. A thought compares it with something else. By this you don’t look, you superimpose. The discipline to look at something without thoughts is important. When you require using your thoughts, only then should you bring in a thought. Try this out.

When unnecessary thoughts pile up, they become pockets of energy. When negative thoughts pile up they seed negative attitude, enforcing negative thoughts. These in turn superimpose energy on the objects of thought, making them appear negative. The influences that are created in life, be they in a form of war, politics, violence, are the result of the influence of negative energy that either becomes real or superimposed .

When your immune system is weak you are prone to disease. Similarly, when your psychological immune system is weak you are prone to negative influences. A negative thought requires no effort. It comes from the lower mind that is mechanical. Noble thoughts have to come from the higher mind that is more conscious and magnetic .

A faulty attitude injures and harms us. We end up making wrong connections. And when we are not proceeding in the right direction, we suffer the consequences.

There is male energy in the female and female energy in the male. Since we are progenies of both genders, we have in us both male and female energies. They have to be in harmony for us to be able to function in a way that gives us the right direction. When you create an external harmony, you create an internal harmony also. By loving a man outside, you love the male energy in you. When you hate a woman outside, a very important part of you, the internal female energy is also dwarfed and injured .

In everyone of us there is both a teacher and a student. Our centre is a teacher teaching us in the language of silence, in the language of purity. The student in us should learn to listen to the teaching. When we do injustice to an external teacher, we are doing injustice to a part of ourselves. By respecting both a student and a teacher outside, we respect something in us .

When there is right attitude, the wisest connection is made. For objective consciousness should include the subject, too.

I Derive Joy

There was a doctor in Benaras who spent 5 minutes in the morning and evening for mediation on God. Knowing this, his colleagues and friends laughed at him. One day they argued that he was wasting ten precious minutes on something, which he had been misled into believing. The doctor replied, “Well, if God does not exist, I agree that I am wasting ten minutes a day. But, if He exists? I am afraid you are wasting your entire lifetime. I prefer to waste ten minutes rather than a lifetime. Why should you grudge me the ten minutes joy that I derive from? I am not robbing you of your joy; why should you rob me of mine. He asked. The critics were silenced. –Baba- Chinna Katha

Making mistakes

All of us commit mistakes. However much we wish to be perfect we err and brood over it for quite a long time. It may be a miscalculation, misjudgment or misconception of any aspect of life. When we realize our mistake, we are full of tension, unable to concentrate, feel sleepless and even unable to find peace of mind. It is because we have come to know our mistake. Subsequently, we develop the fear of making a mistake again, which is the worst mistake of all. Such a fear creates uncertainty, and inferiority. It makes our image shrink. Should one continue with this inner fear?

We must come out of that state of mind. After all, mistake can be corrected, so why should we endlessly? Why should we give up hope and belief in ourselves before we try to find out our potential to correct and improve? True greatness lies not so much in making a mistake as in rising above it.

We are all mistake-makers, but thank God we have the power to be mistake-breakers. The capacity to rise above a mistake is the beginning of success. Mistakes give us an opportunity to find out our true worth. We must see that we correct ourselves and do not repeat the mistake. Wang Yangming, a Chinese philosopher said. The sages do not consider that making no mistakes is blessing, but they believe that the great virtue of man lies in his ability to correct himself and continually to make a new man of himself.

Keep An Attitude of Gratitude.

An attitude of gratitude-that is being grateful for everything God sends us- is a key to praying effectively. And it is a quality that takes some effort to cultivate on a daily basis.

One of my teachers , Rabbi Zelig Pliskin in his book “Gateway to Happiness”, relates the story of a man who one day decided to spend a few minutes appreciating his morning cup of coffee. It was a part of his daily routine and, God forbid, if something went wrong and he had to go without it, he surely missed it.

As he began to ponder over this cup of coffee, he jotted down his thoughts. First he noted that coffee beans grew in Brazil, and someone had to plant the trees and tend them until the coffee beans reached maturity. Then workers had to pick the beans had to be roasted and ground and packed for shipping. There was tremendous work involved in the shipping industry, which allowed the coffee to reach the United States in time. This alone required hundreds of people. Finally, the coffee beans arrived in his grocery store.

But that was not all. The water for the coffee was boiled. The matchbox could not be left out. He drank his coffee with milk, so the dairy industry had to be considered and all the work involved from the time the milk left the cow until it reached his coffee cup.

At the need of writing eagerly for half an hour, the man had not even begun to describe the cup, saucer and teaspoon he used, the table he place them on, or the chair he sat on.

For the first time, he became aware of thousands of people whose work was necessary for him to have that cup of coffee. This awareness led him to a most intense spiritual experience. He prayers for the next few weeks were with a deep feeling of gratitude to his fellow human beings all of whom made it possible for him to exist on his planet.

He became aware of the thousands of people necessary for him to have a cup of coffee.

Now that is what appreciating a cup of coffee did for this man. But what about all the things that had happened that same morning before he came into the kitchen?

These same things happen to all of us in much the same order, and we can easily imagine the sequence of events; First, he woke up-there , he was alive! He opened his eyes and watches the objects in his bedroom come into focus. Yes he had eyesight. Then he moved his hand to rum his eyes. For his hand to move, thousands of electrical and chemical changes had to take place in his body and travel from his brain to his arm.

He looked at the alarm clock and murmured, “I better get going”, He did not give it a second thought that everything in his body was functioning just find he had eyesight, he had mobility, he had consciousness.

God made sure that he had all these things, but man took them for granted each and every day much the same way he had taken his coffee for granted.

When his coffee was not there one morning, he missed it. He appreciated it more when he was deprived of it, when he had run out of coffee beans, or the oven malfunctioned and he could not boil water. How much more would he have missed his eyesight , his limbs, his mind!

You Make Your Own Happiness.
Abraham Lincoln said that people were just about as happy as they made up their minds to be. You can be happy if you want to be. It is the easiest thin in the world to accomplish. Just choose unhappiness. Go around telling yourself that things are not going well, that nothing is satisfactory, and you can be quite sure of being unhappy. But say to yourself, “Things are going nicely. Life is good. I choose happiness”, and you can be quite sure of having your chose.
To a large extent many of us make our own happiness by our thoughts and attitudes. Anyone who applies the right formula may become a happy person.
In a train journey, I sat opposite a father and daughter who are strangers to me. Obviously the girl’s manners where unpleasant and her complaints frequent. She found the train service terrible, food not fit to react. I noticed, however, that she ate the food and enjoyed it.
Her father looked at me. “My daughter”, he said “is in the manufacturing business.”
“What does she manufacture”? I asked curiously.
“Un happiness”, he replied, “She manufactures her own unhappiness”. His explanation describes exactly what most people do –they manufacture their won unhappiness.
It is pity that life itself provides enough problems to dilute our happiness. It is foolish to add to the difficulties further unhappiness with our own minds. We manufacture our own unhappiness by entertaining unhappy thoughts. Perhaps you feel that other people are getting what they do not deserves and you are failing to get what you do deserve. That belief produces envy, self-pity and resultant misery. How then we proceed to make for ourselves happiness?
Our happiness or unhappiness depends to an important degree upon the habit of mind we cultivate. Develop the happiness habit, and life will become a continual feast, i.e. you can enjoy life every day. Out of the happiness, habit comes a happy life. And because we can cultivate a habit, we have the power to create our own happiness.
The happiness habit is developed by simply practicing happy thinking. Make a mental list of happy thoughts and pass them through your mind several times a day. If an unhappy thoughts should enter your mind, immediately stop, consciously eject it, and substitute a happy thought. Every morning deliberately drop happy thoughts into your conscious mind. Such thoughts will help cause events to turn out that way.
The reason can be directly traced to the manner in which you began the day in your thoughts. A few such remarks as the following can help; “ I believe today is going to be a wonderful day. I believe I can successfully handle all problems that will arise today. I feel good, physically, mentally, and emotionally. It is wonderful to be alive. I am grateful for al that I have had for al that I now have, and for all that I shall have. God is with me n He will see me through”.
One of the most simple and basic of good principles is that of service to poor, sick and suffering men and women. It is amazing that happiness turns into a sincere expression of compassion and friendly helpfulness.
“Where love is”, Said Tolstoy, “God is”, and we might add, where God and love are, there happiness is .So, a practical principle in creating happiness is to practice love.
Expect little , give much, When we give, we expect at least an equal return. But if we make a habit of giving more than we get, we will find ourselves enjoying life more. It really works out that way. Do not think about getting your mother to do something for you; think about what you can do for her. And do not do this today only but every day.
Thus , having changed inwardly, you will begin to create happiness of such quality that you will wonder if you are living in the same world.
This is the secret of happiness. Get this experience and you will get real happiness, the best world can offer.
An Aspirant
A boat may stay in water, but water should not stay in the boat. An aspirant may live in the world, but the world should not live within him.

The effect of ‘maya’ is powerful. With so many versions of spirituality, however, looking for ‘Brahmn’, the Supreme Consciousness, is like looking for a needle in a haystack. The present age, kalyug , was predicted to witness the downfall of dharma . To some, spirituality is a means to attract maya instead of a way to remove bondage. Then there are others who consider art superior to penance and bhakti . Yoga does not distinguish between different paths to achieve the Divine; so there is no question of debating over which path is superior. Patanjali has given forms, all culminating in yoga or union with the real self, none superior to the other. However, the various limbs or aspects are being picked up in isolation by some practitioners and propagated as the only means to achieve the Divine; we need to be aware of this and take care. All gods or devtas are forms of energies. They each go through a phase of transition and play their role in governing some aspect of Creation. They operate beyond our senses; hence the question of pleasing them with dance or drama or any physical exercise does not arise. For a yogi, entire Creation unfolds as drama. The ultimate purpose is to realise the drama and not get affected by scenes and acts. The need is to rise above karma. That’s what Krishna emphasised through his leela , not getting affected or attached with the play. This is called nishkama karma or karma free of attachment, that is, free of pain and pleasure. This is the underlying message of the Gita . Evolution in a human being is a process of constant ascent through various chakras or aspects of life, from basic needs and desires of the physical body to the highest aspect of physical creation, the arts, and finally over the self. Yoga describes chakras clairvoyantly seen as energy centres strung along the sushumna nadi which runs along the spine, in the energy body. There are seven major chakras in the body, governing all aspects of Creation for that being. The characteristics of every chakra are those aspects of life each one of us passes through in order to overcome hurdles to evolution. First is the basic instinct of food and survival: the characteristic of mooladhar chakra, located on the base of the sushumna , running along the spine. Next is swadhishthan , sexual and reproductive energy, creation at a basic level, two inches above mooladhar . Third is manipoorak , in the navel region, the centre of power, storehouse of energy. Ravana was killed when his navel was target of attack. Fourth is anahat, the centre of love and compassion — not possession or selfish emotions — located in the thoracic region. The next centre is vishuddhi chakra, the seat of art and higher forms of creativity. Clairvoyantly observed, all artists have a pronounced vishuddhi chakra, but this centre is also directly connected with the swadhishthan , and this is probably why artists tend to have greater libido. Vishuddhi , located around the throat region is the chakra governing the highest physical aspect of creation, art, definitely over and above other physical aspects of creation. Art is closest but not the highest on the path of evolution. In the last phase of kalyug a majority of us are at the level of the swadhishthan or manipoorak ; few are at anahat and even fewer at vishuddhi . Those at the ajana have experienced ananda and are now in union with the Divine, in deep contemplation, in eternal ananda .

Learn the Cause to know the effect
The process of learning programmes us to think in a specific manner. That every event or thing has a cause. Learning or knowledge is based on accurately interrelating cause with effect. Learning helps make the effect a predictable outcome based on our understanding of all the forces acting on the cause. The cause and effect thought process programmes our intellects unidimensionally. The paradigm works fine within a narrow spectrum only on the gross level. At the subatomic or subtle level, all the predictable physical laws become redundant. Reductionism, causality are incomplete tools of the human mind. Even in the Bhagavad Gita deliverance from all unhappiness is advocated by transcending the cause-effect algorithm. Indian philosophy has described this concept of noncausality as ‘ajati’. This concept is at the crossroads of the spiritualscientific divide. Singularity or advaita as described by seers stuns the intellectual process which is under the spell of the cause and effect pattern. The instant one veers from the path of cause and effect, the intellect is severely handicapped. Even scientific thought has now started inclining towards ‘experience’ rather than ‘experiment’ and the very quaint principles of quantum mechanics force one to abandon all rationality and reason. The Upanishads talk of “totality” , where even if one were to remove totality from totality, one would still be left with totality. This concept cannot be comprehended by the cause-effect principle. The mysticism shrouding spiritualism is because of the apparent disconnection from cause-effect . Science is a process of evolution of thought, whereas spiritualism is involution of thought. Physicists have been battling all along to come to a consensus Theory of Everything. The need for this theory is because the scientists are unanimous in accepting the discrepancy in laws governing the subtle and the gross. Spiritualism is getting to that elusive Theory of Everything without the mediation of the cause effect hypothesis. The Theory of Everything is in essence singularity or advaita. Herein lies the experience that transcends causality. Where the observer, the observed and the act of observation merge into unison. The reductionism that science is obsessed with will finally culminate in the realisation that the elementary building block of all manifestation is just energy. That is what the String Theory seems to point to. What varies is the form or the perception of the form, not the content. Reductionism will reach a level where matter transforms into conscious energy, just as water becomes vapour. What has changed is the state, not the fundamental substance. This change of state from water to vapour is one-dimensional. Manifestation is the ability of the source to virtually express itself multidimensional . How can one therefore employ cause and effect to comprehend that singularity when both are mere projections of the same singularity? When we talk of virtual reality as in simulators or even cinema, is it not paradoxical that the intellect is aware of the illusory nature of the projection? At one end of the spectrum is pure awareness and the other end is also awareness which forces the senses to temporarily assign reality to the virtual image. Realisation is the process of moving from the awareness of virtual reality to pure awareness. Identification with this singularity will necessarily happen only by transcending the cause effect protocol. The writer is a consultant neurosurgeon. Courtesy times of India
God save Indian science
Indian scientist are split down the middle over their belief in the existence of God, the first nation –wide investigation into their deepest personal thoughts has revealed.
One fourth of scientist took an atheists or agnostic position another fourth were firm believers according to the finding of a survey by the Us based institution for the Study of secularism in society and Culture.
The rest said they were unsure, or dint respond to the question on God. Which was included in a Web-based survey that covered 1,100 scientists from 130 research or educational institutions and universities scattered across India.
But one in three scientists surveyed believe in sins and deeds of past life, and in life after death, and one in four scientist believe that “ holy people” can perform miracles.
Forty percent of the scientist approve of the ritual of seeking a religious endorsement of a space launch.
“Our scientist aren’t applying the scientific temper in all fields of life, “ said Narisetti Innaiah, the chairmen of the Center for Inquiry in Hyderabad, a non-government organization with branches in several countries that says it is seeking “ to provide an ethical alternative to religious and paranormal worldviews”.
The Center for Inquiry had helped design the questionnaire sent to the societies, al of who had a doctorate or equivalent degree.
“Our space societies take replicas of launch vehicles t temples before a launch, “Innaiah said. “The reflects a belief in supernatural powers,” he said.
The investigators aid the Indian stuffy is expected to be a benchmark for future surveys to be conducted in other countries.
“Sometimes like this ha never been done before,” said Ariela Keysar, a demographer and assistant research professor in public policy at ISSSC, at Trinity College. Hartford Connecticut.
“We began with India because India produces a large number of scientist working world-wide. The impact of Indian science (education) goes far beyond India, ”Keysar told The Telegraph over the phone.
The Indian survey has shown that 49 percent of the scientist believe prayer can deliver rustles and at least 7 percent believe in ghosts, sprits and the caste system.
One top Indian biologist says the finding did not surprise him.

Faith in oneself is what is needed to sustain motivation. Faith in yourself slowly leads to think of rational goals that may inspire you to take up a challenging task ahead with a clear vision of your goal.

For instance if you have a vision to become a top scorer in a particular examination, do the needful and stay focused on the work involved.
Keep acquiring knowledge and make learning a continuous process. Read good books, articles, listen to the lectures of intellectuals in the relative fields. Soon you would experience the thrill of success.
You must remember, new learning brings you new insights, which are crucial for you progress. Above all, you must seek support you need from other sources. You must be able to identify the resources you need to complete the takes.
Do your work pr9omptly because postponing work leads to delay and perhaps, you my not do it later. Remember that sometimes there may be moments of indecisions. Inaction but don’t fall prey to gloom, but “Arise awake and stop not till the goal is reached.”

Obstacles are stepping stones not stopping stones to success.
Mind cannot be annihilated when noble thoughts are entertained.

Where does real life end and virtual life begin? The line is blurred…
Samrat is a 26 yr old HR professional. On a regular day he reaches office around 10 am and logs in, going into various online communities and chat-rooms. He leaves office around 6:30pm and logs in as soon as he reaches home. He is online almost as long as he is awake. Samrat is only one of the numerous people who live more in the virtual world than in the real one around them.
Samrat knows that.” Life is hectic and it’s very difficult for me to visit and call up my friends on a regular basis. It is far easier to keep in touch with them on line, since most them are on line too. But it is true that the virtual world is becoming very real for us. We are moving away from the world around us.” he says.

I Derive Joy
There was a doctor in Benaras who spent 5 minutes in the morning and evening for mediation on God. Knowing this, his colleagues and friends laughed at him. One day they argued that he was wasting ten precious minutes on something which he had been misled into believing. I am not robbing you of your joy; why should you rob me of mine? He asked. The critics were silenced. –Baba- Chinna Katha

The Gita-Book For The Journey Of Life

The Gita-Book For The Journey Of Life
The Gita is not a book for study and examination as a text-book. It is a book that tells men how to regulate their activities and their minds. It is like a railway guide. It is a guide-book for the journey of life. We should travel with its help, not commit it to memory. Merely committing it to memory will not enable us to reach the journey’s end. Rajaji
Shortcomings
What most interferes with our seeing the good qualities in others are our own shortcoming.
Success
No success ever comes on its own. Behind every success there are untold stories of tails, failures, losses , humiliation and miseries.
Lets Us Learn A lesson From the Geese
Have you ever wondered why migrating geese fly in a V formation?
As with most animal behavior, God had a good reason for including that in their instincts.
As each bid flaps its wings, it creates uplift for the bird following.
In a V-formation the whole flock adds at least 71% more flying range than if each bird flew alone.
Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag of flying to fly alone, So, it quickly gets back into formation.
Like geese, people who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going , quicker and easier than those who try to do it alone.
When a leading goose gets tired, it slides back in the formation and another goose flies ahead in that position. If people had as much sense as geese, they would realize that ultimately their success depends on working as a team, taking turns in doing the hard tasks, and sharing leadership.
Geese in the rear of the formation make a typical honking sound to encourage those in front to increase their speed.
It is important that such honking from behind be encouraging.
When a goose gets sick or wounded, two other geese drop out of formation and follow it down to help and provide protection.
They stay with the unhealthy member of the flock until it is either able to fly again, or dies.
Then they fly out again with another passing flock or try to catch up with their own.
May we be so sacrificial, that we may be worthy of such friends in our time of need.
You don’t have to be scientist to learn from God’s marvelous creation; you only need to stop long enough to observe and let God reveal His wonders to you. (Courtesy; Parichayya)
Good Working Habits
Clear the desk of all papers except those concerning the problem on hand. List items according to priority and set out to accomplish them. Recognize the importance of deputation and supervision. When the necessary facts are available, solve the problem then and there. Learn to relax at work. Always rest before you get tired. Do your best. Leave the rest to the care of God
The Truth You Speak
You are as great as the dreams you dream, the love you bear, the values you fulfill, the happiness you share, the thoughts you think, the worth you have attained, the fountains at which your spirit drinks, the insight you have gained, the truth you speak, the help you give, the destiny you seek, the life you live.
Good thoughts
Every good thoughts that we send to the world , without thinking of any return, will be stored up there and break one link in the chain, and make us purer and purer, until we become the purest of mortals.
The fear of Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
Wise Men And Fools
Wise men profit more from fools than fools from wise men for the wise shun the mistakes of fools, but fools do not imitate the success of the wise.
What Makes A Man Good Or Bad?
Good and bad are relative terms. What is good to one is bad to another. If consuming wine is bad to one, it is very good for another. If eating non vegetarian food is good to one it is bad for another. But the basic moral, cultural and traditional standards of a country helps one to know what is good and what is bad.
There is none absolutely good except of course, the Creator. Every man or woman is a combination of good and bad. The difference is only in the proportion.
One may basically be good and another may be basically bad. If one is 60% good and 40% bad another is 60% bad and 40% good . Individually, conscience helps one to identify good from the bad.
There is none totally good or totally bad. Only the degrees of goodness or badness vary from person to person.
What makes a man good o bad? Previous Karma, Birth, Training, Environment and association are some of the reasons.
Man is subject to enjoy or suffer the results of his own actions (Karmas).Good actions brings forth good results and bad actions bring forth bad results. This is a scientific truth like action and reaction causes and effect. Thus the results of ones actions in the previous birth follow in the present birth like a shadow follows a person. Effects of good and bad actions un parallel and one is not adjusted against the other. Man had to enjoy o suffer the results of both good and bad actions. That explains why even pious persons, noble persons and persons, noble persons and persons of charitable nature suffer severely from physical and mental ailments.
The next cause is birth. Where a person is born in a home where the total environment is bad, he cannot grow into a good person. Training by parents teaches and elders also plays a vital ole in shaping a man good or bad. Last but not the least is the association one places himself o attracts dos make him good or bad.
Though one is born with the heavy weight of bad actions of his earlier birth, it is possible to reduce the intensity of the results of his earlier bad actions by constantly thinking of the Creator, associating with good people, developing good environment, choosing a good career or profession and by reading good books.
You can make or mar you present and future though not your past. You will reap what you sow.
Look On The Bright Side
To look on the bright side that is vastly more sensible and helpful than to look at dark disasters that will probably never happen
