"Exploring
the Essence of Shiv: Energy, Devotion, and Mythology"
As an integral part of the Hindu trinity, consisting of Shiv, Vishnu, and Brahma, Shiv embodies a profound concept – that of the universe as an embodiment of energy, Shakti. This perspective is eloquently expounded by Sulabha Kore in her book titled "Shiv and Shivalaya," written after her prestigious Tagore National Fellowship for Cultural Research awarded by the Ministry of Culture. Shiv transcends being a mere name; it is a dynamic force, Shakti, that encompasses the entire cosmos, Kore beautifully articulates.
Shiv
is not conceived through birth; he is swayambhu – self-originated,
self-manifested – a creation in and of himself. He predates the existence of
the universe and worlds. Shiv's presence predates all else, earning him the
title of the Adi Yogi, the primal yogi. He simultaneously embodies emptiness
and fullness, is formless yet with form – nirgun and sagun. As Ishwar, the
divine being, he personifies the manifestation of energy, evoking reverence and
devotion alike.
Shiv's
presence is all-encompassing, from the macrocosm to the minutest particles. He
is ubiquitous and indomitable, despite also being known as the destroyer.
Within Shiv's form resides the universe, rendering him eternally linked with
its existence. This indestructibility translates to the universe's eternal
nature, perpetually evolving through countless cycles of life and death,
navigating pralayas and mahapralayas – cycles of cosmic dissolution and
super-dissolution.
Curiously, amidst Shiv's grandeur, he is deemed easily pleased and is affectionately referred to as Ashutosh, one who's swiftly satisfied. Kore sheds light on this phenomenon by suggesting that we often humanize deities, considering them akin to us. This approach draws us closer to the divine, envisioning gods as relatable figures, albeit with exceptional attributes. Shiv, the supreme savior, personifies this connection.
Kore
highlights Shiv's affinity for tranquil and natural settings, leading to his
presence in the Himalayas, Sahyadri hills, valleys, water bodies, rivers,
springs, and dense forests. "Shiv resides yatra, tatra, sarvatra – here,
there, and everywhere. He epitomizes Satyam, Shivam, and Sundaram – Truth,
Goodness, and Beauty."
The
significance of the monsoon, particularly the Shravan season, to Shiv has deep
mythological roots. The tale of the churning of the milky ocean, the samudra
manthan, is believed to have unfolded during this season. This event unveiled
auspicious treasures along with halahal, the deadly poison. Shiv valiantly
consumed the poison to safeguard the world. His throat turned blue, earning him
the name Neelkanth – the blue-throated One. This narrative explains the
offering of water and milk to Shiv's icon, the Shivlingam, during Shravan, as a
gesture to mitigate the effects of the poison.
To
this day, this ritual continues, particularly on Mondays, when devotees fast,
pray, and honor Ishwar by chanting "Har Har Mahadev!" and "Bhole
Nath ki Jai!" This practice is a testament to the timeless devotion and
reverence for Shiv, his symbolism, and his enduring impact on the spiritual
fabric of Hindu culture.
IF
HE EXIST
I drive joy there was a doctor in Benaras who
spent 7 minutes in the morning and evening for mediation on God. Knowing this,
his colleagues and friends laughed at him. One day they argued that he was
wasting 7 precious minutes on something, which he had been misled into
believing. The doctor replied, “Well, if God does not exist, I agree that I am
wasting 7 minutes a day. But, if He exists? I am afraid you are wasting your
entire lifetime. I prefer to waste 7 minutes rather than a lifetime. Why should
you grudge me the 7minutes joy that I derive 4m.-
