Vedanta in daily life

Quote from the True Charm and Power of Vedanta

Vedanta in daily life

The teaching of Vedanta drive away the fear of death, because they say that death, because they say that death cannot attack our souls. The teachings of Vedanta say that we are immortal by our birthright, we are children of that universal Spirit and therefore, we are beyond death. Fear of death will never trouble the mind of a student of Vedanta . “As we throw away our old worn-out garment, so the soul throws away the garment of the old body at the time of death and manufactures a new one, according to its thoughts and deeds. What a great consolation is this that we are no longer dependent upon the freak of an anthropomorphic God and we have not been created out of nothing by the sudden whim of a Creator, but our souls existed in the past and shall exist after death, our own actions, and we are responsible for our future happiness and misery . We are not going to eternal perdition, nor are we born in sin and iniquity. Thus the teachings of Vedanta take away all fear of death and make us happy and centered in our earthly career. What can be moiré beneficial to us in practical life.

Celebration of colours

The Speaking Tree, Spirituality, ET

by Anou Lunia Singhvi

After a stark winter, the intoxicating spicy scents of ‘tesu’, the flower of the Palash tree, announces the arrival of spring. Humans follow nature, celebrating the season’s beauty and abundance.

The spring-time bounty is the foundation of Pushpayurveda, the lost science of using flowers to treat disorders of the psyche. Ancient seers seamlessly merged the salubrious with the spiritual, and from time immemorial, youngand old smear one another with colourful powders and soak each other in sweet-smelling flower water, transforming applying colours and throwing flowers into dynamic meditation, lifting the psychological tenor of the individual and catapulting it to sublime bliss of the universal.

It is said that in the Sat Yug, Prahlad, son of demon king and self-proclaimed god, Hiranyakashyapu, was given capital punishment for refusing to accept his father’s godhood. The boy stayed true to his belief in God and emerged unscathed from the fire that was meant to set him ablaze. Instead, it burnt his invincible demon aunt Holika, marking the triumph of good over evil.

In Dwapar Yug, gopis expressed their affection and devotion through their springtime Raas Lila with Krishn. Their husbands, the gopas, expressed their jealousy by staging a symbolic fight with their wives, encouraging us to embrace all emotions.

Through Holi, we understand the need to discard negativity by using the white, hot heat of ‘will’ and the positive aspects of the ever-changing emotions.

True Religion always Help

Quote from true charm and power of Vedanta

True Religion always Help

A human being passes through different stage of growth and decay in life such as conception the embryonic state, birth, childhood, youth, middle age, old age, and death. At each of these stages, true religion helps the manifestation of the higher potentialities of the human spirit.

The conception of child may take place under various situations; It may happen from various forms of marriage. It may happen in a marriage approved neither by society nor by religion. Again , it may happen from a marriage approved by religion and society and blessed by all. The last type may be generally said to be the sacramental marriage in which a chaste young men and a virgin accept each other solemnly in matrimonial relationship through proper religious rites. In every religion there is provision for sacramental marriage. Conception may and does happen even outside of wedlock

One Hindu scripture makes a general statement that the progeny of a couple partakes of the character of the form in which they were married. That is to say if the marriage is in the best or in an approved from the progeny is more likely to be good if the marriage is of a condemned form, the progeny is likely to have a low character.

Offspring’s, says Manu, who will have spiritual eminence beauty, virtue, wealth, fame and very long life, are born to a approved sacramental marriages. Whereas likely to be cruel , wicked, vicious and irreligious .

Good children are more likely to be born of a couple who are pure in head and perfectly loyal to each other. According to Hinduism , in the birth of a child there are two side of the question of a good soul elects good parents for being born in the world, evil souls elect evil parents. . this in a way, is a metaphysical statement, flowing from the law of karma . in psychological terms Hinduism holds that the prenatal disposition of the parents largely determines the mental constitution of the offspring

This is another way of saying that one may choose the type of children one wants by regulating one’s life and thought according to the precepts of true religion. the conception which is preceded by prayer will not bring forth a child who will be a source of agony to the parents.

Stilling the Agitated Mind The Speaking Tree, India, ET

By BHARTENDU SOOD

To understand what yog is, we need to focus on an anecdote from the epic ‘Ramayana’. During the course of exile, when Ram and his younger brother Lakshman were frantically searching for Sita after her abduction by Ravan, they met the local people who showed them a few ornaments they had found scattered at a place. Ram was shattered with the sudden and unexpected development.

Therefore, he asked Laxman to see whether the ornaments belonged to Sita. What Lakshman said to Ram is the manifestation of yog, ‘O Revered One! I never saw the face of Sita in the last so many years, so I won’t be able to identity her ornaments except the anklets, since the first thing I did every morning was to touch her feet.’ Yog in its true sense is to restrain our impure thoughts and lustful desires by stilling the agitated mind.

In the words of Krishn, ‘Yog is to cultivate a detached but unified outlook, serenity of mind, skill in action and the ability to stay attuned to the glory of the Self, the Atman and the Supreme. The only way to douse the flame of desire is by simultaneously stilling the mind through self-discipline, and that is all about yog.’ In other words, ayogi is one who is not driven by the mind but is able to make it subservient to the soul.

And the soul attains that divine state only when it becomes one with the higher Self. Asana, one of the eight limbs of Patanjali’s Ashtanga Yog, is only an exercise unless preceded by ‘yam’ and ‘niyam’, the first two stages that purify the mind. The ultimate goal of yog is ‘samadhi’, absolute bliss.

Knowledge

Quote from the True Charm and Power of Vedanta

Knowledge

Pleasure is not the goal of man, but knowledge. Knowledge is the goal of all life. We are all of us struggling towards knowledge. The real life of man consists of knowledge. He who can become made with an idea , he alone sees light{177)

All our knowledge is based upon experience. Instinct, reason and inspiration are the three instrument of knowledge. Generation is the essence of knowledge. Books are infinite in number and time is short therefore the secret of knowledge is to take what it essential.

The gift of knowledge is the highest gift in the world.

The first end of life is knowledge; the second end of life is happiness. Knowledge and happiness lead to freedom. No action can give you freedom only knowledge can make you free. Knowledge is irrisistable; the mind cannot take it or reject it. Knowledge alone can make us perfect. {VII=18) Knowledge is power (144) The only value of knowledge is in the strengthening the disciplining of the mind .

All knowledge must stand on perception of certain facts, and upon that we have to build or reasoning. All human knowledge proceeds out of experience , we cannot know anything except by experience . all knowledge is by reaction. All knowledge and all power are within and not without. Curtsey pearls of wisdom

What Makes You a Leader

By SHRI SHRI NIMISHANANDA

Today, no one is working with full potential. That is why we are anonymous. Usually, one notices three patterns in the lives of people. Some lead, others follow, while many quit. Leaders are those who have self-motivation, zeal and dedication. They have the ability to tune into their inner Self, so they can guide and motivate others. Those who follow must have the enthusiasm to comprehend and implement the mission and vision placed before them.

They must also work at transforming their own shortcomings. We see many quitters around us. They flow with worldly currents and lead mechanical lives. Which quality prevents us from becoming mechanical? Awareness. If we are constantly aware, life is always interesting. We enjoy everything, for everything inspires us. Awareness is not alertness.

Alertness requires effort and has an element of stress. Awareness is alertness without tension. We should do nothing mechanically. Even stirring a spoon of sugar into a cup of tea should be done with complete awareness. Then there is always a deep sense of joy and connectivity with Divinity. Awareness is a relaxed and expansive state that eliminates tension.

Lack of awareness also generates indifference for others, while awareness creates complete connectivity with Divinity and all beings. We become natural leaders who inspire and ignite the flame of awareness in every being

Spiritual Practice

Quote from the True Charm and Power of Vedanta

Spiritual Practice

It is best for the ordinary Sadhaka , the spiritual aspirant not to concern himself with human love. Let him give himself heart and soul to God as He is in Himself. That will purify his mind and clarify his vision. If he indulges in human love as an ally in the path of spirituality, there is every chance of Moha, infatuation, stopping in, with a blurring of the spiritual vision and eventual fail. All such experiments must be carefully avoided . But the right and privilege is always left of serving others as God Himself –but observe. It must always be as God, and not as man; and there must be as reference to the usual love-relations. The human element must not be allowed to creep in ; for they are fraught with danger.

We must here insist that what we have written above, only applies to sincere spiritual aspirants and not to the average man. There are many who are redeemed by the touch of human love. There are many again. Whose life would dry up without the springs of human love? Most men are in this condition. Then duties then are in this condition. Their duty then is to conceive their love-relations in the best possible spirit, to purify, ennoble, and exalt them. Then they are for their good and essential  to it. But beyond even this noble state, is the life spiritual . when a man has been sated with human love, when a man has been sated with human love, when finite life and reality have made him restless to escape  their limitations, when his heart yearns for the Infinite and Eternal, even as the mother cries for her child, then spiritual life begins . and then so called human love appears as a dark, deep, weed-smothered well, to quoted the significant description. Of Sri Ramakrishna . Like the fabulous Cahataka bird, a man then cries for the rain-drops in order to slake his thirst and refuses to drink from rivers or ponds evewn though they be full.

The modern age with its cheap idealism, its secularity and tendency to cover the corpse with flowers has been trying to create a glamour about normal life, the life, of the senses and surface mind . spiritual aspirants , if they are serious and sincere  must beware of its pitfalls . men have tried in every age to idealize the real, to shut their eyes to the grim reality  that this world with all the joys and sweets  is after all false . but they have not succeeded yet and they never will .

Live without regrets

By Atul Sehgal

Life is a mixed bag. For most of us, it brings goodies interspersed with adversities and many opportunities for progress. Some folks are deeply regretful of missed opportunities, follies or blunders that cost them heavily through the course of their lives. Yet, there are others who always appear to be thankful for what life gave them, never regretful for what they did not get.

Regret may appear to be a natural emotion to some, but to others, it is equally natural to never grieve over their past or present adversities. Regret can also be a negative emotion that dissipates your mental and physical energies.

The only difference between regret and worry is that the former is in the context of past and the latter in the context of future. In the spiritual context, regret means a mental expression of unhappiness with some action or outcome. One should remember that man always acts as per his best understanding in each situation. Unforeseen problems can emerge and they could be absolutely beyond his control.

Then why should an unfavourable outcome bother him? Fretting or regretting, therefore, is against the immanent and inviolable laws of the universe set in operation by the creator. Regret is different from remorse, in the sense that remorse is a feeling of penance for the wrongs committed by a person.

It sets him on a corrective course. In the divine setting, whatever happens is for your ultimate betterment. Learn from your mistakes but never curse yourself. So, no regrets, happy living.

HOW TO ATTAIN SUPREME LOVE

Quote from the True Charm and Power of Vedanta

HOW TO ATTAIN SUPREME LOVE

It is said in the Bhagavad Gita;

“Freedom from activity is never achieved by abstaining from action. Nobody can become perfect by merely ceasing to act. In fact nobday can ever rest from this activity even for a moment. (Here activity menas also mental action conscious or subconscious). All are helplessly forced to act by Gunas.

“A man who renounces physical action but still lets his mind dwell on the objects of his sensual desire is deceiving himself. He can only be called a hypocrite. The truly admirable man controls his senses by the power of his will. All his action are disinterested. All are directed along the path to union with Brhaman.

“The world is imprisoned by its own activity, except when actions are preformed as worship of God. Therefore you must perform every action sacramentally and be free from all attachment to results.

Sri Kishna teaches the secret of worhsipping God through all one’s activities . He says ;

Whatever you action

Food or worship;

Whatever the gift you give to another;

Whatever you vow to the work of the Spirit O Son of Kunti

Lay these also as offering before me.

Sankara, having realized his secret of work, said. “Whatever I do O Lord all that is they worship.”

“Worldliness means to feel that “I” am the doer and attachment to worldly objects and persons is to feel that “I” possess them , they belong to “me” and they are “mine” Sri Ramakrishna of the used to say ,”I am machine. Thou art the operator. I am the house Thou art the dweller in the house. I do as Thou makest me do. I speak as Thou makes me speak.

God is the king, the ruler within our hearts but when through ignorance, we become forgetful of his benign presence within us, we have usurped his throne. We must shun the false sense of ego. And let the true king, the Lord within rule us , guide us in every way. Say day and night “Not I not I but Thou my Lord”

The spiritual aspirant should try to imitate the lives and actions of the enlightened ones. He should keep his goal always before him: union with God. The best method of reaching this goal is to cultivate faith that union can be achieved, not in the distant future but at any moment. At the same time, however, he must have patience. Patience and perseverance are the two characterizes of a true spiritual aspirant.

In union with Nature

By: Osho, ET

To be against nature is utter foolishness. The divine cannot be against nature; it is hidden in nature itself. So nature has not to be fought against, rather it is a veil that has to be removed. Nature is a part of the divine, it is its expression. Fighting with nature we can go further and further away from the divine but never closer to it. But we have been taught to fight nature since eternity: the divine has been put in opposition to nature. Result: nothing but spiritual poverty.

Nature is in God, and God is in nature. Godliness does not mean being free from nature: it is a complete union with nature. Teaching us to be against nature has taken away the very bridge between our lives and our meeting with the divine.

Nature is a bridge. It is a road that will lead to your destination. There is no other road than that. Nature has to be loved. Only love opens its door. And from that very door, we can see the divine. But we have been told that nature is a bondage. It is a prison. It is sin. These wrong teachings have poisoned man’s mind. And so his love toward nature and his possibility of true knowing have been greatly damaged.

Before the divine can be brought into people’s lives, they must bring back nature into their lives. Without nature first being present in our hearts, the divine cannot be present. The love for nature ultimately transforms itself into a prayer to the divine. Freedom is not from nature, freedom is in nature
