Aware and
knowing
The Speaking Tree | India, Spirituality | ET

We acquire knowledge, but we lack awareness. Awareness
arises when knowledge accompanies action. Mere acquisition of knowledge does
not mean that such knowledge will translate into action. If you smoke
cigarettes, you are susceptible to cancer.
Smokers see the statutory warning on packs but continue to
smoke. But if one day the smoker begins to suffer on account of his smoking,
then the knowledge turns into awareness that smoking can indeed be injurious to
health.
It is either because we lack this awareness, or are unable
to translate awareness to action, that we commit mistakes. We should enjoy
freedom and be enthusiastic every moment of our lives. But normally, one hears
only tales of sorrow.
Attachment leads to
sorrow. One of the best ways to attain material prosperity, spiritual progress,
peace and liberation is through meditation. Not by just sitting motionless with
closed eyes, but by being aware of our actions, words and thoughts.
Our thoughts are like countless water droplets that form a
river of words and actions. We have little control over this river. However, it
is easy to block or change the direction of a river’s flow at its source with
just a stone. So unless we first purify our minds, our words and actions will
not be pure.
Today, stress is common. This is mainly because we are
obsessed with our own selves. No amount of experience can help us realise our
mistakes unless we cultivate the humility required to surrender our selves.

Spirituality
& Innocence

Happiness in life does not depend only on the body, external
comfort or external objects. True happiness in life depends on the mind. If we
gain total control over the mind, we will gain control over everything else.
The science that teaches us how to control the mind is true science, and that
is spiritual knowledge. Only if we first gain this knowledge can we properly use
all the other knowledge we have gained.
In the past, there used to be families with 30, 40 or even
50 members. They lived together with so much unity, mutual affection and
deference! The atmosphere in such families was one of love and peace because they
understood spirituality. They knew what life was and what it was for. Their
lives were founded on spiritual principles. Today, if there are three members
in a family, they are like three islands in an ocean. Each one has his or her
own ways, and they do not get along with each other.
If people are well-versed in spiritual principles, we can
avoid such situation, at least within families. Spirituality is what brings
hearts closer together. One who has learnt how to swim in the ocean revels in
the waves. Every wave will be a joyful experience for him. However, one who
does not know how to swim will be at the mercy of the waves.
Likewise, one who understandsthe principles of spirituality
will be able to face every obstaclein life with a smile. Some mistakenly
consider spirituality to mean blind faith. The truth is, spirituality dispels
the darkness of ignorance.

But, if
He exists?
I
drive joy There was a doctor in Benaras who spent 7 minutes in the morning and
evening for mediation on God. Knowing this, his colleagues and friends laughed
at him. One day they argued that he was wasting ten precious minutes on
something, which he had been misled into believing. The doctor replied, “Well,
if God does not exist, I agree that I am wasting ten minutes a day. But, if He
exists? I am afraid you are wasting your entire lifetime. I prefer to waste ten
minutes rather than a lifetime. Why should you grudge me the 10 minutes joy
that I derive 4m.
