How to attain Purity of Mind
Attainment of Purity of
Mind is the first step to self realization. The man who attains this stage is nearer
to God.
One can attain purity of
mind by subduing one’s senses . Man does his “Karma” (“Work”) through three
outlets (1)thoughts (2) speech (3) physical action. These three should be pure.
because of impure thoughts a person suffers though his speech and action are
good. Constant remembrance of death prevents one from entertaining bad thoughts
and deeds too.
Thoughts : once Ekanadha,
an astrologer king told a house-holder that he would die within seven days. The
house-holder fell ill. On the seventh day Ekanadha met the man and asked him
how much sin he committed during those seven days. When a tiger like death was
standing before him, he said there was no scope for any evil thought.
Speech: one should
cultivate right speech . it is to abstain from (1) falsehood (2) tale-bearing
(3) harsh and abusive speech and (4) gossip . man’s speech often indicates his character
. Anger and hatred make our tongue vile. Anger is just like fire. Fire kindles
itself and then burns other objects. Similarly anger first burns the heart
where it is generated and then burns the hearts of others. Viswamitra lost his spiritual
power due to his own anger. Duryodhaan’s fall was due to his hatred of the
Pandavas. That truth which will harm he innocent should not be spoken.
Physical Action: when the
thought is guarded, both physical and verbal actions are also guarded. Desire enters
the mind through the five senses. The five senses should be kept under perfect
control of the mind. They should be made slaves to the mind and the mind should
never become a slave to them. Even if one sense is let loose, the mind is
undone. The deer being sensuous to music is lured into a net. The fish being
partial to its tongue, swallows the bait. The black bee, drawn by the sweet
smell of a flower. Gets intoxicated and dies. The elephant being susceptible to
his mate’s charms fells into a ditch . all these bring ruin upon themselves.,
having no instinctive control over a particular sense one can easily imagine
the fate of a man who is a slave to all his senses.
We have to cultivate the
habits and manners of those whom we wish to make friends with . Similarly a
virtuous man or a devotee should attain perfection in God’s attributes like,
love truth, mercy and impartially. The following are conducive in the respect
1) Vegetarian diets 2) The company of a saintly person 3) Firm determination not
to respect evil action. 4) Acquisition of wisdom that discerns the rise and
fall of things 5) worshipping God in all living beings 6) Perfect self-control.
The moment a man realizes his folly and determines to follow the various path,
wisdom dawns on him.
Ratnakara, a high-way
robber, became a saint-poet Valmiki, the moment he realized his sin.
Thus it is possible to attain
purity of mind by keeping the senses under control. Courtesy wisdom
Quote from the True Charm and Power of Vedanta
Role of a Divine
Incarnation in Advancing Human Evolution
In India , we have the
tremendous faith that whenever such a situation arises, when ordinary human
wisdom cannot restore the balance , a divine manifestation appears on the
earth, and through his teachings, society begins to achieve a new balance, a fresh
understanding of values; dharma rises and adharma declines. It is only because fo
this , that despite problems every now and then, we have been living for the
past 5000 years. Before the birth of Buddha, there was much intellectualism, meaningless
asceticism, and the masses of people lived with all sorts of superstitions and
mental weakness. Then Buddha came in the 7th or 6th
century BC. He did not initiate any social reform movement He merely stimulated
the spiritual impulses in human beings. As a result people once again developed
honesty , integrity, compassion, and the spirit of service. These are
consequences of the spiritual awareness fo human beings. That is how great
teachers work and great reform movements are born as a result of the inspiration
derived from such great people. it is like watering the roots of the tree and
not merely the branches and leaves.
These great people do not
initiate any reform movements, for such movements do not deal with the
fundamental malady of society or of human beings. Take Sri Ramakrishna for
example. He did not start any reform movement, but by his insertion many reform
movements will be born, many saints artists. Etc, will come A basis spiritual
stimulus is given to human society . this is what has happened time and again
,in our country. It has seen decline, but it has also seen resurrection, regeneration,
when a nation lives very long, often such physical and mental maladies arise,
but the nation becomes young once again. This experience is unique to India and
has been referred to by many historians.
Many other civilizations
arose in this world, played their part for a few centuries , and then decline started
and they died. We now only study about them in books and museums, whereas our civilization
has a continuity. Every now and then it gets refreshed, a new youthfulness comes
to it, tremendous energy comes , and things begins to improve, A new Yuga
begins and the people develop high moral awareness , humanistic impulses , and sprit
of service. Quote from the True Charm and Power of Vedanta
But, if He exists?
I drive joy There was a doctor in Benaras who
spent 7 minutes in the morning and evening for mediation on God. Knowing this,
his colleagues and friends laughed at him. One day they argued that he was
wasting ten precious minutes on something, which he had been misled into
believing. The doctor replied, “Well, if God does not exist, I agree that I am
wasting ten minutes a day. But, if He exists? I am afraid you are wasting your
entire lifetime. I prefer to waste ten minutes rather than a lifetime. Why
should you grudge me the 10 minutes joy that I derive 4m.
