Mind and Meditation

Every body will say that we should control our mind, is it possible? If everybody could achieve this, there would not have been any problem n the world.

The mind is restless, turbulent, powerful and stubborn. But the mind can be controlled with practice and calmness. Through the control of mind , one can attain illumination. Such a person succeeds, even in adverse circumstances. The person may still face the trials  and tribulations of life. But he never lacks the courage and strength to face the. When a person controls his mind. His higher nature asserts itself and his bidden powers are  released . Persons without self-control will not even retain the prosperity they have . in some situations , we do things knowing fully well that it is not the right thing to do. And there are situations in which we act suddenly without knowing what is right or wrong . wrong action results in mental turmoil.

What are the difficulties faced while are the difficulties faced while trying to control the mind? Strong likes or dislikes, attachments or aversions, living an immoral life, harming others, taking intoxicants, inquisitiveness about others affairs, finding fault with others, being egocentric jealous of others prosperity, are the subjects which makes controlling the mind difficult. The human mind is like a drunken monkey stung by a scorpion.

Attachment to worldly objects are the most powerful impediments in the task of controlling the mind. When attachments are removed, dislikes and mistaken beliefs also leave us easily. The mind is restless due to the impurities of the mind impulses and emotions such as envy, hatred , anger, fear, jealously, lust, greed, temptation are the impurities, of the mind. When impurities are removed, the mind will be sharp to observe even the faintest of the vibrations.

The mind follows the wandering senses as the wind carries a boat off its course on the waters. Mediation helps to clam down the mind and to control the mind. The mind has to be gradually and systematically brought under control.

Mind development can be achieved through mediation. Many scientist are now propagating what our ancient Rishis and Saints practised and have been saying for thousands of yeas hat mediation and repetition of mantra can help to calm the mind. In the recent study on hypertensive people by the researchers of Harvard University found that transcendental mediation can actually reduce stress and help to avoid heart disease.

Swami Vivekanada said before we control the mind, we must study it . we have to seize the unstable mind and drag it form its wanderings and fix it on the idea. Over and over again. Must be done . in the beginning during th process of controlling the mind, many revolting thoughts,will come to our mind. As the pactixe continues, the trubulence of mind may increase for some time Gradually the mijn’s eccentricties will loose their strength. The link between the sense organs and sense objects is the mind . when the mind is withdrawn from sense-objects, the sense organs also withdraw from their objects.

Mediation helps to control the mind. Through the body we experience the world of objects though the mind we experience the world of emotions and through the intellect we experience the world of thoughts.

Controlling thoughts is one step towards controlling the mind. Methodical control of thought is a greet secret in controlling the mind  in the initial stage, thought control is to entertain good thoughts in its highest stage thought control means complete cessation of thought . to control of thought. To control thought keep the company of good people with noble thoughts and avoid evil company . evil company brings the dislikes out t the surface.

To control the mind, two sets of inner disciplines are necessary . when one notices that a big waves of anger is just rising in the mind, one should raise a contrary wave, a wave of love fast. After the anger has set in, this method will not work. But impress the fact on your mind that anger is self –destructive.

Food habits also play an important role in controlling the mind. Train the mind to be simple , intelligent, sensitive and enthusiastic it is a mind which has value for truthfulness and straightforwardness, rather than deceit and falsehood.

A pure mind enjoys making others happy, whether it is man or animal. He thus takes every opportunity to serve others around . he ever transgress the freedom of others , nor imposes thing son others just because the likes them . such a mind alone is called a pure mind . it is indeed a great asset to have such a mind . Knowledge , therefore comes easily to them, with least possible effort.

What a great delusion that the Supreme Self, the knower of past, present and future, has assumed the form of jiva and working like a slave under the delusive power of maya, forgets His real glory.

There is not separate jiva, it is never created . God Himself appears in different forms wearing the grad o name and forms , and forgets His real nature.

SECRET OF LEADERSHIP

According to Professor Cyril Northcote Parkinson, a well known English Political Scientist the secret of leadership is composed of six aspects.

Imagination can be described as an ability to picture alternative goals in succession. It aids a leader to choose wisely in the planning and execution . in  the ultimate attainment, one can reach the stage of a visionary , which I s, of course, given to only a few individuals.

Knowledge is priceless need of a leader, it is from the figment of knowledge he has collected in the past, that he can plan a course to reach his destination. Proper knowledge alone gives the man required confidence to attain his goals, it is the lack of confidence that makes people to show hot temper, indulge in faultfinding and bullying and shouting techniques. The truth is, there are no bad soldiers-only bad officers.

Ability is skill a leader has in guiding others to perform their tasks to the best of their ability . This ability will make the leader do things which other people find difficult.

Determination is the unfettering belief in one’s capacity to do the job . it sparks in the followers the necessary confidence to do their job well.

Ruthlessness is a discredited quality in our society but one cannot achieve distinction without  this quality for the following reason.

The idle, the disloyal and the fake have to be dislodge. (b) Where such elements are not  curbed, it is the willing and able persons who have to bear all the burden. This is a situation that cannot last long, without affecting the morale of the willing workers (c) O4rganisational ability can only be improved by rewarding the fit and punishing the unfit (d) Credit must be given when due otherwise it will be meaningless to be creditworthy.

8.        `professor Parkinson did not believe in the theory that leadership is  a quality with which the man is born. Nor, it can be learnt in schools and college Leadership is an art that can be acquired with effort and no qualification is necessary!

One of the most interesting studies in life is to note how our false concept can distort even a holy example, so that it no longer bears any resemblance to the original idea. For instance, the average man look upon the world of religion as entirely apart from active life. He thinks that in order to become religious one must abandon worldly activities and assume a mournful, repentant attitude. This is not a true conception of religion. What good will even the loftiest ideal do us or our fellowman, if we do not life it and bring it to fruition? Unless it gives us some thing definite and sure it might just as well to exist for us. The whole purpose of religion and philosophy is to give us that which is inspiring , elevating and constructive . merely going to  church or professing a creed, whether it be Christianity or Buddhism or any ism is not active religion. It is not practical religion it is mockery . it is degradation for the soul of the individual and for the soul of the race. It can only produce hypocrites and fanatics.

 

True religion we carry into our outer activities; we make it alive , alert productive; if a person does nothing and gives nothing for the benefit of his fellows, how do we know he is religious ? merely upholding a theory has no value. If we have high ideals we must express them in our lives. This problem confronts us all. Whether we are laymen or in the religious life makes no difference what soever. We are living souls ; we have to be active. These are the ideals of Karma Yoga, the great Indian system. Of right action. It proclaims that religion is not only for the man who is inactive. On the contrary it holds that the man who is active and energetic, who is constantly doing something in the world has just as much right to enter the kingdom of heaven as the hermit without duties and without obligation. It pays great tribute to the people who live in the world and keep their ideal intact. They are the heroes.

By its very nature ; Love an never be the exclusive possession of nay religion , sect, school or brotherhood. The common clam there fore of such sections of the community to the exclusive possession of truth to their particular religious doctrine is a denial of Love.

Love is a winged angel the refuses to be chained to any doctrine whatsoever. Love is above and beyond, doctrines and philosophies of men, yet Love includes. All the righteous and the unrighteousness, the fair and foul, the clean and the unclean. He whose Love is so deep and wide and to envelop all men of all creeds is he who has most of religion, and most of wisdom for the knows and sees men as they are.

Obey the Laws OF HEALTH

Most of us disobey the laws of health and prepare the way to invite sickness. Let us follow some simple hints. Which is observed will help us enjoy live of contentment and happiness.

Exercise is required for healthful living . by active exercise the impunities are eliminated from our body and as a result sickness does not step in.

All work without any recreation leaves us dull. The body and the mind need recreation which keeps us in good health.

Overwork, smoking and excessive drinks upset the physiological working system in our body . we therefore need periods of rest and relaxation.

Sunlight stimulates the actions of the skin and supplies energy to the whole system. We must there for expose ourselves everyday to sunlight. If we do not make use of this free gift of Nature by ignorance or carelessness we violate the laws of health.

Deep respiration is necessary for healthy life. By the process of reparation impurities in the lungs are removed . so let us allow pure air and ventilation in our living rooms and be sure to take deep breathes everyday. It will help us to sleep better, aid our digestion and soften our nerves.

To enjoy good healthy we must drink pure water which purifies the blood . you feel refreshed when you take pure water several times a day.

Cleanliness is essential for the health of the body and the mind. Take your bath with cool or warm water regularly everyday at fixed hours.

Worry brings sickness , get rid of it many of the sickness that overtake men are the result of mental  anxiety, discontent, remorse and lack of confidence.

Finally , if we want to live with a healthy mind and as happy men, let us have confidence in the powerful God.

There is no Tomorrow and the best possible way to prepare for tomorrow is to devote all attention with all our intelligence and enthusiasm on doing  today’s work to the best possible extent by today itself.

This is the only possible way to get ready beforehand for the future.

“Our main business”. Said Thomas Carlyle, Scottish writer, “Is not see what lies dimly at distance but to do what lies clearly at hand. But often we neglect our work that leis clearly at had and worry about the affair the lies dimly at a distance.

A vision without a task is a dream.

A task without a vision is a drudgery,

A task with a vision is the hope of the world.

And a task with a vision will find it s root on doing today’s work, “ when we do it with a sense of punctuality.

Negligence is more dangerous than ignorance.  We neglect our work of today and think of the work of tomorrow which is nothing but an empty dream. Laziness and postponement are the real cause of the attitude and we must get rid of them at the earliest.

We should not forget that our trouble is not due to ignorance but inaction. This is the golden rule. We already know enough to lead perfect lives we suffer because of our inaction. So, we must jump into action and try to have a bright tomorrow.

Who is a friend?

The Gita, however, realizes that for those who are full of desires and want enjoyment, these sacrifices are useful; for such people must have some enjoyment , and have their desires fulfilled to a certain extent, before they can tread the pat of fulfilled to a certain extent before they can tread the pat of desirelessness, which is the goal of spiritual life. It is desire that covers knowledge and it has therefore to be destroyed by controlling its seats-the sense, the mind and the intellect. But this highest ideal cannot be followed by all. Ideals have to vary according to the capacity of the aspirants, so that they may be followed with faith ; for that is surer way to progress than aspiring after a highest ideal prematurely. Confusion of ideals is detrimental to individual and social welfare. By performing works prescribed by scriptures though with desire at first, one gradually progress and finally attains the state of desirelessness. But works prohibited by the scriptures are never helpful and so one should abide by the scriptural ordinances and not be prompted by inordinate desires prohibited by them . Even in enjoyment there should be some discrimination. Other wise it would bring us down to the level of the brute.
