Path of Devotion

The path of renunciation is very hard. Complete self-surrender at the feed of the Master is a very hard thing, but without that spiritual growth is impossible-The disciple should always be ready to go to the mouth of a cannon or before a tiger  at the command of the Master without asking why. This is what is called true devotion.

Another thing necessary is to have no attachment for earthy things. The mind must be free from lust and greed. He who even here, before he is separated from the body, can resist the force of lust and anger, that man is really wakeful, that man is happy-Try to realise this and you will be free at once . Crush down egotism and say “I am lower that even a blade of grass” . Then you will see that all impurities will vanish, you will become divine. Then you will have the right to take the Blessed name of the Lord. Egotism stand between us and the Lord our true Self; so destroy it and say. Not I but Then Bring me the real strength and destiny all weakens,. Know that Atman the true self is never realized by a weak person.

Everyone wants happiness and to avoid suffering but the knowledge to achieve this is not imparted in schools and colleges. It is available in spiritual texts. There is no direct correlation between wealth and happiness. One can be wealthy and miserable. And one can be poor and happy. With power and position also, there is no guarantee of happiness. What, then, is the source of happiness?

Scriptures say that happiness is obtained in the phase of quietude between fulfilment of one desire and rise of another desire. Favourable objects, including persons, create a strong desire in our mind to obtain them. Desire creates restlessness. When the desire is fulfilled after a lot of effort, the mind experiences peace for some time. That’s the period we call happiness. Same objects may not create desires uniformly in all individuals. A person who sells his second hand car is happy getting rid of it, and the buyer of the same car becomes happy possessing it.

Happiness happens when our mind is quiet. This is evident during sleep. Why do we look forward to going back to sleep day after day? Because sleep is the most enjoyable state, when the mind is free of desire and thought. In sleep one is not aware of one’s gender, financial status, whether one is knowledgeable or ignorant, and yet, we have maximum happiness. So, the source of bliss is not outside. If we learn the technique of achieving quietude even in the waking state, we can experience superior bliss with full awareness. But our mind is always restless, chasing new objects and desires, looking for happiness.

Desires fulfilled with self-earned means and with discrimination of mind are fine. But one has to keep watching if desire fulfilment actually makes you happy. If there is more suffering and marginal happiness, one can reflect on whether it is worth it.

Wise people say that happiness is a ratio of the number of desires fulfilled divided by total number of desires we have. A person whose 10 desires are fulfilled out of 30 will have happiness score of 33%, while a person who had 10 desires fulfilled out of 10 will have 100% happiness. And one who has zero desire will have infinite happiness, because any number divided by zero becomes infinite mathematically.

A person surrounded by many exciting objects and activities may not find happiness in any of them, although his ego will remain boosted always. With a peaceful mind, even a simple meal can become a great source of inner joy and satisfaction. A person who has lot of meritorious deeds in his account has a superior, peaceful mind; is happy in any circumstance. He easily accepts adversity as coming out of his past karma and moves on, and tries to fill his life with more meritorious deeds.

Vedanta systematically leads us to the conclusion that there is an all-powerful consciousness within each individual that is the real Self. Here, the storehouse of bliss is always available. But it is experienced more in a quiet mind.

The final message is, minimalistic living and simplifying our life in order to keep the mind peaceful. This is the best way of drawing the nectar of happiness, the source of which is right within us.

I drive joy There was a doctor in Benaras who spent 7 minutes in the morning and evening for mediation on God. Knowing this, his colleagues and friends laughed at him. One day they argued that he was wasting ten precious minutes on something, which he had been misled into believing. The doctor replied, “Well, if God does not exist, I agree that I am wasting ten minutes a day. But, if He exists? I am afraid you are wasting your entire lifetime. I prefer to waste ten minutes rather than a lifetime. Why should you grudge me the 10 minutes joy that I derive 4m.

Spiritual Healing

 Help is lasting only when it shows us how to bring ourselves into union with the Source, and when we have learned to do that , we have no further need of healing because there  is a constant flux of life in us which keeps us well. What impedes that flow now? It is our attitude of mind-doubt, despair, all the various phases of worldly consciousness, which makes us feel more united with the body than with Spirit the more we think of the body, the less are we conscious of that which sustains the body.

Vedic teaching declares with dynamic force. The soul of man is eternal, unbounded, it is not bound by body or senses or pain or affections it is free, pure and perfect. If through contemplation we are able to lift our thought to the place where this is a reality, we are restored. if we can separate ourselves-not through death but through higher reflection-from our body consciousness, at once we are released from bodily pain. We must not do it, however as beggars, asking for health or physical comfort. It must be done with superior feeling and understanding. We must seek the higher –for the sake of the higher, not merely in order to benefit the lower nature; otherwise we shall miss our end.

The pandemic makes us think of how being kind to others contributes to healing and happiness. Look at yourself not just as a body but also as a soul and a heart.

 

‘Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared,’ the Buddha said.

 

We have to learn how to be kind to oneself as well as others. We have to motivate ourselves to get involved in altruistic projects that contribute to humanity and make our world a better place to live.

 When you give of yourself, you not only contribute to the happiness of others, you also find yourself happier, and derive deeper meaning from life. Altruism is in your self-interest, and if done creatively, may well be the greatest gift you can give to yourself.

 While you are doing altruistic acts, you are in the goodness mode, you get spiritual rewards, you have a sense of freedom from desires and complaints, have no upsetting thoughts and emotions inside, no urge to hang on to own problems or future insecurities, you are not afraid of failure, and are free from wanting happiness.

 Being kind and generous takes the focus away from one’s worries and elicits gratitude, and this, in turn, boosts happiness levels. Findings show that it remarkably improves overall health. Also, when we help others, we feel more capable, effective and abundant.

 

Experts say there are three essential rules for giving. First, make sure to contain the cost of giving. Second, be sure to use value-enhancing strategies.

 

Finally, make sure that you see the impact of your generosity.
