Love is Tennis Means…The game of tennis was invented so long ago that no one has been able to find out why the score is kept the way it is. When a player makes his first score, he doesn’t get one point –he gets 15 . His next score gives him 30. His next give him 40.Suppose you have made your first score and your opponent has no points at all . Do you say, “it is 15 to nothing in my favour”? No. You say , “Fifteen love”. In tennis “love” means “Zero” But why ?Most people think that love was a slang word to begin with. You are trying to be established in what you really are; that is, , you are trying to be established in your relationship with divinity, in your innate purity and blissfulness.
Desires themselves are not discarded, they are turned higher. Emotion is also like this. For example, instead of being angry with others’ failings, be angry with your own. Instead of being proud of the things of this world, be proud of your given heritage. You are a child of the Supreme Lord. You are supposed to walk in the path of light and truth. In this way, even pride and anger are not discarded, but are used to advance on the spiritual path. In vedantic tradition there is a story of a blind man who could walk, and a lame man who could see. They pooled their resources and the lame man climbed on the shoulders of the blind man. Then the lame man who could see directed the blind man who could walk to where they wanted to go. So the two men worked in harmony and they got along very well. Similarly, our reason and our emotion together can be very well harmonized under the guidance of reason. Vedanta has very much stressed the power of reason, leading to determination and control of the will by the power of right decision. The question arises as to how this power of determination can be developed. Until the mind is purified to a great extent. The power of reasoning does not exist. Now, how does one purify the mind if purification of the mind means clearing the mind, of all undesirable emotions such as anger, jealousy, hatred, malice, fear, lust, and greed? You may say that if you have the power of decimation, then will and reason together, can control the emotions, but , before the powers of reasoning and will are developed , your emotions lead you astray. This is the problem of human life.
Vedanta says that a child develops his emotional nature long before he develops his power of reason and power of volition. Before he knows the distinction between pleasant and good. He is drawn by what is pleasant. Some delicious food , ef fastfood,drug, alcohol, meat comes to him, and he will gulp it down even though he does not know whether the food will be good for him. It is delicious, that is enough. He sees a person or some beautiful sight, and he welcomes it because it is pleasant, therefore, it must be good. Unfortunately, the pleasant often appears as though it were good, and that it is tragedy of life. Pleasant and good become mixed up.
