The Freedom to Love: Making Space in Relationships

 Why I Am a Vegetarian

1. Life Is Connected

The more we understand nature, the more clearly we see that life is deeply interconnected. Forests, animals, birds, insects, plants and human beings all form part of one living system. When we damage one part of it, the consequences can eventually return to us through environmental imbalance, loss of biodiversity and changes in the conditions that sustain human life. For me, vegetarianism begins with recognising this connection and respecting life wherever it exists.

2. The Meaning of Ahimsa

Ancient Indian wisdom expressed this understanding through the principle of Ahimsa—a commitment to avoiding unnecessary harm. It is more than simply a rule about food; it is an attitude toward existence. When we consciously choose kindness over cruelty, we cultivate sensitivity within ourselves. Vegetarianism, therefore, is my personal expression of respect for the lives with which we share this planet.

3. Respect for Every Creature

I believe every living creature has value, regardless of its size or usefulness to human beings. Animals experience fear, pain, comfort and attachment, and their behaviour shows that they are not merely objects without feelings. Once we recognise this, it becomes difficult to ignore their right to live. I do not believe that our desire for taste or convenience should automatically outweigh another creature's interest in living and avoiding suffering.

4. India and a Tradition of Vegetarian Living

India has preserved vegetarian traditions for centuries, particularly through philosophical and spiritual traditions that emphasise compassion and self-discipline. Thinkers and spiritual teachers such as the Upanishadic sages, Buddha and Mahavira placed great importance on reducing harm and recognising the unity of life. Vegetarianism is not universal even within India, but its long history here demonstrates that a plant-based way of eating can exist alongside cultural, philosophical and spiritual traditions.

5. The Modern Food System

There is also a significant difference between traditional animal consumption and today's industrial systems of production. Modern agriculture can involve animals being raised in highly confined environments and processed on an enormous scale to satisfy global demand. Thinking about that system makes me question whether unnecessary suffering should be accepted simply because it has become commercially normal. Choosing vegetarian food is one practical way in which I can reduce my participation in that suffering.

6. Compassion as a Way of Life

For me, vegetarianism is therefore not about claiming moral superiority over anyone who eats differently. It is about trying to make my own choices consistent with my belief that unnecessary harm should be reduced wherever possible. If we learn to become more sensitive to the suffering of animals and other living beings, that sensitivity can also influence how we treat people. Compassion is not weakness; it is a discipline that can shape character.

7. Building a Gentler Civilization

A peaceful society cannot be created only through laws and institutions; it also depends on the attitudes people carry within themselves. A culture that values life, discourages needless cruelty and encourages empathy has a better foundation for cooperation and peace. That is why I choose vegetarianism. It reminds me every day that my well-being does not have to depend upon another creature's suffering, and that even a small personal choice can express a larger belief: life deserves respect, and compassion should begin wherever we have the power to choose it.

The Freedom to Love: Making Space in Relationships

1. Love Needs Space

A healthy relationship is not about being together every moment or knowing every thought of another person. True closeness also requires freedom. Like two shores separated by water yet connected by the same sea, two people can remain deeply connected while still having their own identities, interests and inner worlds.

2. Together, Yet Individuals

Whether it is friendship, family or romantic love, excessive attachment can slowly turn affection into pressure. When one person constantly seeks attention, reassurance or control, the other may feel trapped. Giving someone breathing space does not mean loving them less; it can mean trusting the relationship enough to let both people remain themselves.

3. The Courage to Let Go

Letting go can be one of life's most painful experiences. People we cherish may eventually choose different paths, and their departure can leave an enormous emptiness. Yet holding someone against their wishes rarely preserves love. Sometimes acceptance is the only way to transform loss into growth and discover what life is trying to teach us.

4. What the Self Teaches Us

The Upanishadic tradition offers another way of looking at attachment. It suggests that our deepest experience of love is connected with the Self—the inner consciousness through which we recognise value and meaning. We may believe another person alone can provide permanent happiness, but relationships cannot permanently fill an inner space that belongs to us.

5. Love Without Possession

Buddhist thought similarly distinguishes love from attachment. Compassion and loving-kindness encourage us to care deeply, while attachment can become a demand to possess, control or prevent change. People and circumstances are constantly changing. Accepting this impermanence can make love gentler, wiser and less fearful.

6. Freedom Strengthens Connection

Two people can share dreams, laughter, responsibilities and affection while still maintaining personal space. They need not surrender every part of themselves to prove their devotion. In fact, individuality can keep a relationship alive because each person continues to grow, learn and bring something fresh into their shared journey.

7. Love, But Do Not Cling

Perhaps the wisest form of love is neither cold detachment nor possessive attachment, but loving freedom . Care deeply, stand beside those you love and cherish the moments you share—but allow them to breathe and evolve. When love does not demand ownership, togetherness becomes a choice rather than a prison. Sometimes, giving space is not moving away from love; it is creating the space in which love can truly flourish.

IF HE EXIST

I drive joy there was a doctor in Benaras who spent 7 minutes in the morning and evening for mediation on God. Knowing this, his colleagues and friends laughed at him. One day they argued that he was wasting 7 precious minutes on something, which he had been misled into believing. The doctor replied, “Well, if God does not exist, I agree that I am wasting 7 minutes a day. But, if He exists? I am afraid you are wasting your entire lifetime. I prefer to waste 7 minutes rather than a lifetime. Why should you grudge me the 7minutes joy that I derive 4m.-
