Acentral idea in George Gurdjieff ’s philosophy was that man is in deep sleep. He is an automaton and each of his actions, thoughts and feelings are just passive and mechanical responses to stimuli. Things just happen, with no true and independent thought or action. Without self-knowledge, he says, man will remain a slave, a plaything of the forces acting upon him.

Gurdjieff considered human beings incomplete, but endowed with an ability to develop potential. The way is self-observation, the beginning of a long journey of self-discovery. In the process, your deceptive sense of self-becomes apparent. Gurdjieff calls them ‘I’s. The ‘I’s are false personalities that appear and disappear at will, to which you are continually enslaved. Your deeds or emotions are determined by the peculiar characteristics of each ‘I’ — a schizophrenic existence that seems to tear your life, swinging you across happiness and sorrow.

Gurdjieff ’s teachings divide man into three centres: the moving, thinking and emotional centres. The moving centre is responsible for physical work, thinking centre for logical reasoning, and emotional centre for emotional states. We need to harmonise all the three centres equally.

But most of our lives are limited to one or, at best, two centres. Our lasting memories are ones where our physical, emotional and thinking centres have combined to create a complete experience. Man cannot do this by himself. He must work in a group with like-minded people. To overcome their sleep, they can

wake each other up.

Everyone wished to be a leader, forgetting that to be a leader hew has to be the humblest in the group to which he belongs,. It is wrong to think that a leader is born. He is a person who works hard and climbs one rung after another till he reaches the top of the ladder. He may have been born with some special qualities which marked him out for leadership, but the most important among these qualities must have been his readiness ot sacrifice his own interests for the sake of others. He surely had some good qualities so that in group activities his choice as leader was automatic and unanimous., but if he is a selfish man his is not likely to retain his position for long, he will be thrown out sooner or later.

There is an interesting story about Lenin: Soon after the Soviets captured power in Russia, the food situation, which had been bad earlier, became worse. People had nothing for eat except potatoes. Naturally there was much discontent throughout the country. This discontent was fueled further by the rumour that though there was hardship fore everybody, the leaders live a comfortable life. They had everything they wanted. A group of people decided to pay a surprise visit to Lenin when he was having his lunch. They were taken aback when they discovered Lenin’s only food was potatoes! Lenin asked them what they wanted. They said “We wanted to ask you a question. We have, however, fond the answer to the question and we dent now need to put it to you’ Abashed, they left the place. No wonder the Soviet people still love and admire Lenin though they are disillusioned about Stalin , disillusioned even about Communism which Lenin had introduced.

The leader must be an example of what he perches, People will love and respect him when they see he is an honest man true to what he stands for. If he betrays his professed ideals, people will hate him. Very soon, people will remove him from his position.

A true leader does not seek power, but power comes to him all the same. People love and respect him because of his character-and they follow in his footsteps willingly, gladly.

A true leader does not place himself before others, he places others before himself. He does not want power and position, he only wants an opportunity to serve others. If he has power and position, he used them only to serve others in bigger and better way. He does not think he is the master, he thinks he is the servant of all. He does not clam any privilege, he only begs that he may be allowed to serve. He does to want adoration, he wants criticism so that he can avoid errors. How Climate Impacts

Climate is the average weather occurring in a place over a number of eyars. If someone says “Greenland is a gold country” it is a statement about climate. Isn’t it rainy today? Is a remark about the weather, which changes from day-to-day and sometimes hour to hour like our thought and mode.

What influences Climate?

The climate of a place depends largely on how far north or south of the Equator is it; the way in which the land and sea are arranged in the area is also very important. Mountains, ocean currents, and winds all play a part in forming climate.

Climate Zones; The earth may be divided into three areas with the same sort of climate . These areas are known as Climatic Zones.

Near the North : and South Poles are the Polar climatic regions. These are very cold, with snow and ice all the year round although not much snow actually falls there. There are only two seasons: a log winter and a short sunny summer, when there are twenty four hours of daylight every day

The tropical region lies each side of the Equator and is hot all the year round . Parlts of the tropics have fairly distinct wet and dry seasons , but in other parts there is very little change between the seasons.

The two temperate regions lie between the tropical and polar regions. In these areas the temperature is neither hot nor very cold. However, some of the wettest places on Earth are in those regions . There usually four distinct seasons : Spring , Summer Autumn and Winter.

Other climatic zones fit in between the three main ones The Sub-Polar regions lie between polar and temperate regions. Sub-Tropical between temperate and tropical, and Equatorial in the middle of the tropical zone.

Another sort of climatic zone is arid zone. It occurs in various places on the Earth .There is a shortage of rainfall or snow in the zone. The most well-known arid zones are deserts, like the Sahara Antarctica has a very low snow fall and is, therefore , and arid zone., it is sometimes called a Polar desert.

Are climatic zones a clear demarcation of climate? The climatic zones are only a rough guide to climate .particular, places may be affected strongly by their surroundings. Places high up have colder climate than places ear sea level; places near the sea have warmer winters and cooler summers than places inland.

Another way to decide what sort of climate a place has is to examine the animal and plant life . if there are no trees then it is either cold or dry in mountainous areas, trees will not grow above a particular height. This shows that the climate is colder the higher one goes.

In deserts the problem is not cold but lack of water; trees grow near oases or water courses. Even if there is not water in sight, a line of tree in the secret indicate that there is water under the ground in tropical areas the trees stay green all  the year round since there is little seasonal variation. The Dharmadapada teaches.

All man tremble at punishment all men fear death. Likening others to oneself one should neither slay nor cause to slay.

Tee Kung asked. ‘Is there one single word that can serve as a principle of conduct for life Confucius replied. Perhaps the word reciprocity (shu) will do. Do not do unto others what  you do not want others to do unto you.

Like wise we read in the New Testament;

And as you wish that men would do unto you, do you unto them.

This is one voice of religion everywhere on the basis of which alone protection form injury is possible. And this principle holds good in family , society and national and international relationships.

That includes family members this world is an intricately interwoven web of relationship. To mange this well, we have to change ourselves and our perceptions. The programme for Building a Quality Culture in the Family, we have to deal with many sensitive matters like ego, communication, aligning values and principles etc. let us remember the importance of the following points.

Your family can be heaven or hell. It all depends on you as you are the one creating happiness or unhappiness because of the way you think.

Problems are inside out. Never outside in.

Conscience always directs us to the right way

Accepting people as they are is right way to start with.

Parents are the first teachers.

Ego kills harmony in the family.,

We are all millionaires . The body , mind, heart and soul are invaluable gifts of God has given to us.

We should learn from the tree . it is always giving! The roots are our perceptions the stem is our attitude and leaves are our behavior. If we want our behavior to change , we have to change our perceptions.

If you want a rose, you have to accept the thorns.

The mind talks everything knows nothing. The hart knows everything talks nothing.

Words create a lot of trouble . Talking is an art. It is also a science . Practice how to talk , how much to talk, when to talk and what to talk. Whenever we talk, we talk from our point of view. Try talking from the other person’s point of view.

The power of the spoken word is so great that you can create a reaction in someone forever!

Besides prayer and worship, association with advanced souls is also of great value in the development of Bhakti . it is said that even a moments association with a holy person serves as a boat in which the ocean of the good fortune to know a true saint, he gets a glimpse of the Ideal realized in life and is often impelled t seek such a realization himself. According to them there is no necessity for an intermediary in religious life because light can come direct from the source of all lights. Although theoretically a person can have education without a teacher, almost all send their children to schools and colleges . similarly , it is no doubt possible to realize God without any help from outside but such a possibility will only be within the capacity of  very rare and exceptional soul; all others must depend on help from more advanced souls, Fortunate, indeed , is the Bhakta who comes across a Guru who is a man of realization or a highly advanced soul, for such a Guru not only instructs, but I sable to transmit to his disciple the strength and power necessary to carry out instructions.

Search Yourself

Decision without actions are worthless.

Direct your thoughts, control your emotions and ordain your destiny.

We must toil to achieve what the quote above says. Build your own life. Be a benefit to yourself and to all mankind. Build from within by directing your thoughts ad controlling you emotions. You can do this as you search for, find and follow your success system that never fails.

To get help from without , extract the good where you can find it. And this starts from within: the right mental attitude towards persons, places, things knowledge , customs , beliefs –be they y our own or others. Probe yourself and find whether your future is behind you because of an unseen wall that you have built so strongly within you that it prevents enlightened ideas from breaking through. Perhaps it is… perhaps it isn’t . to sense whether your future is ahead of you or behind you, you have to eliminate the existing unseen walls-negative habits and undesirable thoughts and actions-and strengthen and build positive habits-good thoughts and deeds. For character is keystone to success. You can steer the course you choose in the direction of where you want to be-today, tomorrow, or in a distant time yet to come. Choice is yours; you hold the tiller.

But where are you? Now is the time to find out. And now is the time to check your habits of thought and actions. For these have brought you to where you are now. The thoughts you think and the things you do now will determine your future destination. Are you on the right course to get from where you are now to where you really wan to be?

The process is applicable to both an individual, and society or a nation as a whole. An individual and a family from the smallest unit of a society. A state or a nation . in order to build a strong individual, thereby a family  a society and a nation, good character is important. An individual with a strong character becomes an assets in the process of building a mighty nation. So let us begin to strengthen our roots because character is the one common denominator of all personal qualities that insure a truly successful future to all.

If there is too much violence today, let us regret it, but not assume that it is inevitable. Violence is not natural, it is unnatural. And because it is unnatural it can be cheeked, even eliminated. It is possible to have a society where violence is more an exception than the rule. If there is a provocation, a cultured man may either ignore it, or may never express what he feels. He may merely smile and put to shame the person who provoked him.

Man has come a long way since the time be followed the rule ‘Eye for eyes, tooth for tooth’ . He now knows it is better to forgive. If he forgives he wins. To him the welfare of his fellow men is his first priority. he wants to live for others.

Only man can thing in terms of making as a whole. No only that, there are individuals whose concern includes even animals, insects, and vegetables. They feel one with everybody and everything. To them the world is once single unit, it is like a human body where one diseased cell can paralyse the whole system. Swami Vivekananda truly said that even a single atom could drag the whole universe behind it!

The fact has to be admitted that we all are one and we must think and act accordingly. This is true pragmatism. We cannot continue to think in terms of races and countries as we have so long been doing; we may stay separate geographically, politically, even economically, but behind all such divisions there should be the feeling that we are one and we are interdependent. If there is trouble in any part of the world, the whole world is likely to be affected . Spiritual leaders may be aware of this, but the political leaders have to grasp this and frame their policies accordingly .

Brighter side of things

Anand and Ranjit were eating black grapes . Anand remarked “Are not they sweet?” “I guess so” replied Ranjit, “but they are full of seeds” They both wandered into a garden and came across the roses . Anand with joy exclaimed “Look at those big, beautiful pink roses ! the smell is just fantastic” Ranjit turned round his head and said “Do not forget that the stem is full of thrones”

It was warm day. So they stopped at a store for a soft drink, After several swallows . Ranjit complained. “My bottle is half empty already”. Anand reacted. “Mine is still half full” Some of us are like the negative thinking Ranjit. We tend to look at life through dark glasses. We find fault with situations and people , not realising that the problem may be within us. We see only the thrones and rarely notice the beautiful flowers . we complain and grumble for little things, forgetting the many things that are good and lovely for which we should be thankful.

Then , there are people like Anand who concentrate on the brighter side and are happy and grateful. They are realistic about the gloomy side of life, but they do not become worried. They look at the rose and admire it not paying attention to the thrones.

Happiness and contentment can surely be our share if we cultivate the habit of looking at the brighter side of things.

Our lives are influenced by colours

From the experiments made experts have discovered how deeply our lives are influenced by colours. It has been found that colours can stimulate or depress give us an appetite or make us ill, affect our thoughts, emotions and health.

Colours in your home, on your clothes and even the car, may be affecting your working time. Your choice of colours can reveal whether you are happy , ambitious , optimistic and charming.

The colours you choose to  decorate your home could mean the difference between domestic chaos and family harmony. Bright outgoing colours should never be used to the bedroom,. It can create emotional conflict leading to angry outbursts and arguments . in advertising and packing colours can make or break product.

Here the choosing is done by the seeker by means of an earnest longing and struggle. This seeking and struggle on the part of man is essential, according to every spiritual teaching. But it is only to drew the Grace of the Atman, through a self-revelations; as we have seen earlier Sankarachaya emphasis that essential of Divine Grace in commenting on the 1^st part of the verses.

If such the nature of the Atman , it is preposterous for the human mind to hold that its realisation is effected through a series of spiritual practices. Therefore , Yama the teacher, says this in the verse of the katha Upanishad.  Whom alone it chooses, by him alone is it attained, to him this Atman reveals . its own (true) form. It is true that initially, the seeker seeks the Atman; but finally, it is the Atman that chooses the seeker , the chooses to reveal itself to the seeker through an act of self revelation.

This Upanishadic statement of the self-realisation of the Atman is spiritually identical with the idea of Divine Grace upheld by religious centred in a personal God. And Vedanta holds further, as reaffirmed in our time by Sri Ramakrishna that ghe God of the bhakta and the God of the jnani, God the personal and God the impersonal, are one and the same Reality .
