Certain breathing exercises are practiced daily by many in India to cleanse their inner organism, just as they take a bath to cleanse the outer body . There are also other exercises to freshen and prepare for meditation, by bringing the whole system into rhythm. Such practices are not only cleansing to the body, but quieting to the mind. Breath is lie. When we inhale, if we hold the thought that we are filing ourselves with Prana or vital energy; and when we exhale , that we are throwing off all the waste from the system, we cannot fail to be cleansed even by our ordinary breathing. We all know that we live by breathing, by filling our physical organism with oxygen. If added to this we have a certain spiritual understating regarding these things, we can do much to help ourselves.

When we are tired and feel the need of relaxation or when we are nervous and restless. If we will fix our mind on some lofty thought and begin to breathe rhythmically-that is , breathe in and out on an even count-we shall restore our equilibrium and grow peaceful. This is a scientific fact. It may not seem to have any direct spiritual bearing, but it undoubtedly helps us to gain spiritual ends. That is why the ancient Indo-Aryans laid so much emphasis on these practises. They knew that unless a man could control his body and bring it is to a state of equilibrium , he could not focus his mind on the higher facts of life.

Why Yoga is so fulfilling

Yoga is a universal, non-sectarian and secular spiritual formula of life. It concerns expression of divine potentiality hidden within body-mind complex of man. As a science of inner reality, it is a process of awakening for all irrespective of caste, creed or religion.

Journey on the path of yoga begins from wherever we are according to our ever-expanding aspiration and ability. Declaring June 21as International Yoga Day is a fitting tribute to this ancient science.

The objectives of yoga comprise physical well being, prevention and cure of diseases and harmonisation of vital forces within the body. It is an excellent tool for human resource management, emotional intelligence and management of stress. It develops virtues from within and elevates the quality of living. Yoga is also therapy.

Those who prefer intellectual self-inquiry follow Jnana Yoga, while activists follow Karma Yoga via unattached service to humanity. Others adopt mystic path of devotion, Bhakti Yoga, while some follow psychophysical process of Raj Yoga for regulation of mind and deep meditation.

Yoga uproots the seeds of human suffering hidden in ignorance, egoism, attachment, aversion and death-fear. It promotes universal love and selfless service to humanity discovering grand unity in apparent diversity.

I drive joy There was a doctor in Benaras who spent 7 minutes in the morning and evening for mediation on God. Knowing this, his colleagues and friends laughed at him. One day they argued that he was wasting ten precious minutes on something, which he had been misled into believing. The doctor replied, “Well, if God does not exist, I agree that I am wasting ten minutes a day. But, if He exists? I am afraid you are wasting your entire lifetime. I prefer to waste ten minutes rather than a lifetime. Why should you grudge me the 10 minutes joy that I derive 4m.

Spiritual Healing

We must not imagine that all bodily diseases is the result of wrongdoing . There are those who think hat when ever there is any physical disturbance it must be due to sin and they are ashamed to have it known. On the contrary the disturbance may be the outer sign of an active cleansing process, which is preparing us for a new spiritual awakening. it is very great thing to have a healthy body, but a healthy body alone does not lead one to the loftiest pinnacle of spiritual attainment. There are plenty of healthy animals and there are also plenty of healthy people who have not begun to approach the state of spiritual consciousness. Physical health is not the end and aim of life. Bodily healing is not always a blessing. It may even prove a drawback. Suffering also has a purpose in our experience. It lessens the hold of the flesh on us and enables our mind to  rise to a higher plane of consciousness. Sometimes an illness brings a lesion of which we have need. People are awakened often to higher thought and ideals through bodily affliction or through misfortune. A person who is full of aspiration learns both through good fortune and ill fortune, he learns equally though physical dieses and through health. There are many different disciplines in life and if we do not have an all round experience our consciousness remains incomplete.

This does not mean that we should deliberately invite ill health. Health is a great blessing. A healthy body is an undeniable advantage in our spiritual pursuits, but we must not let ourselves become absorbed in the idea of health as an end in itself. the best form of health is where we are least conscious that we have a body. When we are really healthy we do not thinking about the body at all, our feet scarcely touch the ground, but when we are thinking constantly of the body that is not a healthy attitude of mind or a healthy sate of body. We should try to regulate our life in such a way that we do not violate the law, because nothing contributes more towards good health than an orderly life of moderation. We must be careful not to be carried away to minor details. we must desire a strong body wholly that we may express Divinity within us , and that we may have and serve the ideal. If we do not use our health to this end, we are bound again and again by physical fetters.

Say goodbye to your ego

Once a man asked Gautama Buddha, “I want happiness,” to which the Buddha replied, “First remove ‘I’, then remove ‘want’, so you are left with only ‘happiness’.” Simple as it may sound, its implications are deep enough to be reflected upon.

Ego smacks of arrogance. No one likes to deal with people who are arrogant or who display ‘attitude’. Their sense of superiority prevents them from listening to others and renders them unresponsive to constructive criticism. Little do they realise that in the ‘war of ego, the loser always wins’. But as people ‘progress’ in a materialistic world, their ego further gets reinforced primarily because of pampering by friends, relatives, employees or sycophants surrounding them that further pushes them towards their downfall. To avoid these complications, it is better to skip ‘e’ and then let it ‘go’.

The other aspect of Buddha’s advice relates to ‘wants’ or ‘desires’, which emanate from attachments we have for worldly things and beings. Unbridled desires, if not satiated, often lead to anger that, in turn, creates delusion, loss of memory, destruction of intellect and, ultimately, misery. Similar sentiments are reflected in Aristotle’s quote, “I count him braver who overcomes his desires than him who conquers his enemies, for the hardest victory is over self.”

It is abundantly clear by now that ‘ego’ and ‘wants’ are the biggest obstacles in our spiritual evolution. So, let us resolve to dissolve our ego and desires to pave the way to discover the ‘Supreme Self ’ within.

So here was the picture of spirit-of God as spirit; He was formless , but He functioned; He was unpredictable- He could not be governed  by ordinary laws; He had a free will , and nobody could say how . He would work. Actually ,by using the illustration of the wind Christ does not give any very extraordinary idea of God as spirit. But that was not the purpose fo the Christ; his purpose was to give the idea of the spirit as a dynamic entity-as formless and yet with power.

Now , what did Christ mean by worshipping God in spirit and in truth? Probably most Christians find it easier to understand what is meant by truth than by spirit. For instance, in another quotation from john , Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free” the word spirit does not occur, and many commentators have said that the truth is this; Christ is the Saviours , God is merciful, and if you believe in Christ, you will enter into the kingdom of heaven. But in the quotation in which we are told to worship God in spirit and in truth these two ideas, spirit and truth have been brought together. What does Christ mean by this? What does he mean by worshiping God in spirit?

Well Swami Vivekananda would say this means recognizing yourself  as Spirit. Some of you may say, No, we are to worship God by knowing Him to be Spirit. But since Christ first said that God is a Spirit and then said that He should be worshiped in spirit and in truth, he certainly meant to give another idea by the second use of the word spirit. So it must be as Swami Vivekananda would interpret it; worship God, feeling that He is Spirit and you are Spirit. That would be the truth-the truth about yourself and the truth about God. Thus if you worship Him in this way you will be worshipping Him in Spirit and in Truth; in your worship there will be no element of falsehood or unreality. If, on the other hand, you do not recognize . Him as Spirit and if you do not recognize yourself as Spirit, your worship of Him is no the truest worship. Just as worshipping God in an idol or thinking of Him only as an object of formal worship would not be to worship Him in truth, in the same way, to worship. Him without thinking of yourself as Spirit would not be to worship Him ‘in Spirit and in truth’

Cosmic intelligence is present throughout the universe. The Divine is unlimited and infinite. It is not possible, therefore, to limit divinity to the physical confines of a popular place of worship. One can pray to God anywhere — at home, office or even agarden, and you can rest assured that your prayers would somehow find their way to God.

In fact, when an individual prays in solitude, he is more likely to feel the presence of the Divine within rather than, for example, in a place of worship like a temple where huge crowds performing elaborate and often noisy rituals do not allow one to spend much time in divine contemplation.

Yet, the idea of the daily or weekly ritual of going to a place of worship continues to impel many of us to do so, even if in a hurry. Thousands would tell you that they visited a particular temple and their wishes were granted in a miraculous manner. Maybe temples and other venues of worship are special because of the vibrations present there. One would scarcely feel like praying in a bar or disco, for instance, as the vibrations there are different.

The fact is that, by and large, all those who visit temples are praying and thinking good thoughts. For the time they are in the temple, their hearts are full of devotion and they are at their best behaviour; their thoughts are focused on the deity of their choice and in praying. It creates spiritual field of energy. One feels peace, harmony and solace as the spiritual energy there uplifts one’s consciousness.
