The Upanishads and the Ideological Struggle.

 Monday, 28, September 2020

Quote from the true charm and power of Vedanta

The Upanishads and the Ideological Struggle.

The modern world is in the grip of various ideologies of which the most effective ones are those which are most narrow and exclusive. Up to the modern period, religion, especially those of the Semitic family-Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, were the nurseries of these exclusive and narrow ideologies. But in the modern period as religions are wisely shedding this vice of narrowness and exclusiveness. It ahs moved over to the socio-political fields. The eclipse of liberal ideologies in these fields is one of the more glaring features of the twentieth century. Calm and clear reason has all but disappeared from vast segments of man’s socio-political ideologies; they seem to be under the grip of the blind attachment, fears, and hatreds of his collective unconscious. It is a heartening sign of the second half of this century that man’s collective reason, organised in international groups and associations is wagging a slow but successful struggle to tame the blind forces of his collective unreason in these fields. set backs thee may be; but nothing can thwart permanently the onward march of this struggle. Lot it is the manifestation of the time spirit. Behind it is the dynamic energy of that scientific reason and enlighten of the modern age whose impact is already evident in the field of religion for which is provided the million and the stimulus to struggle to liberate itself from the blind forces of man’s collective unreason, and make it function in the lift of reason. Gross National Happiness

The Speaking Tree , India | ET

BY AMITAVA BASU

When happiness is measured in terms of gross national product, it implies value of final goods and services produced in a country within a particular year. Happiness, however, has many dimensions. It is not confined to only income and wealth. For example, a rich businessman may be less happy and grumble more than one who has a lower standard of living as he is content. It is discontent that the rich man experiences which constitutes unhappiness. Happiness does not automatically flow from economic prosperity. People are happy in a society where everyone is safe, has a decent livelihood, and has access to education and healthcare. In a happy society people enjoy freedom, there is no oppression and art, music, dance and drama flourish. It is a caring society.

To establish such a happiness-generating society, policies are needed to link economic progress to human happiness. This requires improvement in socio-economic conditions and satisfaction of basic needs. But growing income and provision of better social conditions need to be supplemented with employment opportunities, social security and adequate leisure time. A happy society is built on hopes and aspirations.

The philosophy enshrined in the concept of gross national happiness aims to promote happiness through careful balancing of spiritual, emotional and cultural needs on the one hand and material prosperity on the other.

How to be a leader

Nobody will come to help you if you put yourself forward as a leader... Kill self first if you want to succeed.

There is no allegiance possible where there is no character in the leader, and perfect purity ensures the most lasting allegiance and confidence.

Some people do the best work when led. Nor everyone is born to lead. The best leader however, is one who leads like the baby”. The baby, though apparently depending on every one, is the king of the house hold.

He who is the servant of all is their true master. He never becomes a leader in whose love thee is a consideration of high or low. he whose love knows no end. And never stops to consider high or low. Has the whole world lying at his feet.

Combine seriousness with childlike naiveté. Live in harmony with all Give up all idea of egoism, and entertain no sectarian views.

The Journey Is Not Easy

Economic Times in The Speaking Tree |  India, Roots & Wings | ET

BY MALAY MISHRA

The basic beej mantra, Aum Namah Shivaya, the panchakshri, inspires elevation to the highest levels of consciousness. Marking the beginning of Creation, it is also equated with the Nada Brahmn.

Shiva, as creator-destructor, is invoked through this mantra at the beginning of any austerity and through japa, meditation. Shiva is synonymous with cosmic time, symbolising the beginning of awareness, that which created the universe.

The concept of maya, or illusion, is woven around it to distinguish the different levels of consciousness.

Remembering Shiva reciting the beej mantra and studying the Shiva Purana can lead the spiritual seeker to higher realms of awareness, aspiring to merge in the mahavakya, ‘Shivoham’, to the highest level of consciousness where the individual ego dissolves into the Absolute Self. Sadhana is the acme of human life, as it constantly evolves towards perfection.

Ignorance is the beginning of the quest for knowledge. From ignorance arises the impulse to know.

The journey is arduous, tricky, at times, painful. But having begun it, with proper sadhana and swadhaya, there is no looking back.

As silence stills the mind, the moment is transfused with radiance and dynamism. Jivanmuktas, yogis, nityasiddhas and chiranjivis — all spiritually evolved — have, with their energies, lent a helping hand to aspirants on the spiritual path.

They have cautioned that shortcuts are to be abjured on the spiritual journey. There should be no half measure, no stopgap measure. Discipline is required of the aspirant in whatever state of conditioning he may be.

101 Buddha Quotes—Buddha Quotes on Love, Life, Happiness, Death

Quote from the true Charm and Power of Vedanta

Path beyond Sorrow

This Divinity Who created the universe and Who pervades everything always dwells in the hearts of creatures, finitized by emotions, intellect, will and imagination. Those who realise this become immortal.

Only when men shall roll up the sky like a skin, will there be an end of misery for them with out realizing God.

He is the Lord of all , and all object are the manifestations. He is the one agent in the universe working through everything. He is the soul of all as well as the power residing in them. He is the first cause that explains every finite cause. To all. He is common and to Him alone is due the worship of every noble heart. Realizing Him- Who is declared a Vasudeva or the Omnipresent Divinity-one becomes immortal and divine it is absolute the most high. The Supreme is not attained because of our indulgence in sense enjoyment, because of our rankling doubt regarding the real, and because of our mind being preoccupied with other objects. With an absolutely refined mind we can know Him, but we cannot reduce that realisation into language for the. Mind has to be cognized with the mind and Seer by the sight (ie Self cognition being unique, the experience it yields cannot be described like ordinary objective cognitions) He, the imperishable. One is reached by purifying to living beings both in the seen worlds and the unseen. Vishnu puran

Vedic insights on wealth

The Speaking Tree | Economy, , India, Lifestyle, Roots & Wings | ET

BY RADHANATH SWAMI

One of the world’s richest men recently added $13 billion to his net worth in one day. It was reported that this was the largest singleday increase in a person’s wealth.

Strictly speaking, this is not exactly creation of wealth. We cannot assume that he actually has that money in his hand and was swimming around in a big pool of it like Scrooge McDuck.

It’s all a virtual calculation, nobody just handed him $13 billion and patted him on the back. It’s all about his stock worth in his company that many rely on absolutely, during the current situation.

If something happened and the company’s stock dropped tomorrow, he’d be ‘worth’ way less. Vedic wisdom, especially in the Isha Upanishad, says that one should see one’s wealth as a composite of many things: one’s entrepreneurial success, a gift of one’s past activities, an opportunity to share with others through benevolent and intelligent charity and so on.

Even after that additional $13 billion, one might have the same two toasts and a hot coffee for breakfast. A text from the Atharva Veda may work as a guideline for today’s billionaires, ‘May you earn as by a hundred hands and disburse by a thousand!’

When you are involved in benevolent work, your capacity to earn multiplies, increasing a hundredfold.

Charity, CSR and other initiatives by corporations in uplifting human quality of life can be safely called real net worth and businesses must strive to create such net worth consistently.

Goodness and Joyfulness

Monday, 07 September 2020

Quote from the True charm and power of Vedanta

Karma Yoga

There are some persons who are moved more by the sense of duty than by the necessity of any supplication or prayer to God. They do not wish to see this world in terms of what is to follow after death. To them the present world is real enough and demands one’s attention and energy to such an extent chat there is no time to indulge in dreams or even in philosophical speculations. They feel they have a duty to themselves duty to their neighbour duty to the nation, and if their heart is expansive enough, duty to the world and humanity. Being of an active temperament-the volitional type –they are always busy with something or other. Hardly have they put one plan into effect. When a hundred others rush into their brains. If they succeed in life , they become great patriot political leaders social reformers philanthropists pisits scientist writers and so on. Their overflowing energy is turned into one or more different channels accoutring to their individual tendencies.

It would be foolish to say that these active workers are outside the domain of God because they do not formerly worship Him. Many of them are inspired by high idealism and are honest sincere and self sacrificing. They sometimes possess virtues which any religions man would admire, nay, even long for. From every point of the earth we are equally near to god, and only a narrow minded fanatic will be able to assert that there is no hope for a person who is outside the fold of an orthodox religion. Every one of our activities is an attempt –often unconscious –to reach Truth or to grasp
Reality. If a man of religion sincerely believes that even the footfall of an ant is heard by God. He will not decry those for whom selfless work is the only religion. They may not  consciously seek God, but who knows that God might not be seeking them!

Goodness and Joyfulness

The Speaking Tree | Lifestyle | ET

By T K MISHRA

A teacher who values every situation and people around him well is a joyous figure. When he walks into the classroom, he can sense all of the patterns playing out around him and all the interactions.

And he’s good at sensing little things to make the situation better, like tone of voice, gesture or quoting from a poem. Students too feel joyful by being around him because he’s so alive, attentive and respectful, and is valuing people.

Such a teacher is joyful because he is momentous, feels emotionally aligned with students, develops understanding with them, has a purpose, and a sense of achievement for mentoring his students effectively. When the teacher is joyful, students express their mistakes, weaknesses and failures freely. The best thing is: ‘you’ and ‘us’ come closer when the teacher brings values and understanding together.

The future path: the perception about teachers is that they are too preoccupied with cultivating professional excellence to bother about connectedness. The competency-based disciplines emphasise employable skills but sideline appropriate values. Goodness, joyfulness, ethics and values have been largely neglected matters. This has significantly contributed to the devaluation of teachers’ status in society.

Widespread use of e-learning in Covid-19 times has shown that technology is a formidable competitor.

Given this, the only distinct advantage that teachers can reap over technology is application of values, which will need to be addressed from within.
